New Years Day is not one for excessive celebration for Muslims as it is in the Christian world. Greetings are exchanged and the life of the prophet remembered. Muhurram traditionally begins from the time of the Prophet's flight or 'hejira' from Mecca, so it is a time to make one's ties to Islam closer, and so 'migrate' oneself to a new future.
