This is a commemoration of the night when the Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet. Food and aid is given to the poor, and many elect to spend the entire night in the mosque. Since this is a gravely serious occasion for Muslims, some even spend the last 10 days of Ramadan on 'retreat' (I'tikaf) there.
