The fundamental Islamic ethical requirement is very simple. The name Islam means 'submission' and it is simply this which Muslims are required to do before God. To practice submission and gain its ultimate reward, a place in the gardens of paradise, Muslims are required to observe five basic practices. These are called the "five pillars of faith".
