Caliph The name given to the successors of Mohammed as rulers of the Islamic world. It derives from the Arabic word "khalifa" meaning "successor". The title of "Caliph" was falsely assumed by the Sultans of Turkey. Also spelt "Calif", "Kalif" or "Khalif".
