  4.   Sound Card Support
  5.   ==================
  6.   This program supports most popular sound cards and will give you extensive
  7.   music, speech and sound effects.  If you do not yet have a sound card,
  8.   limited support is available via your PC's internal speaker.
  9.  
  10.   It is very easy to setup the HENRIETTA's BOOK of SPELLS demo to work with 
  11.   your computer.  Before running the program for the first time, type  
  12.   SSETUP  at the DOS prompt (usually C:\LANDER\BOSDEMO>) and then press 
  13.   <Enter>.  SSETUP then detects the sound hardware installed in your 
  14.   computer, or you can select from a list provided.  Full on-screen 
  15.   instructions are given.

  17.   Sound card notes:

  19.     1. Your card may be compatible with more than one of the listed
  20.        cards.  The most powerful compatible card will normally be selected
  21.        automatically.

  23.     2. Should SSETUP fail to identify a suitable card, make your selection
  24.        manually.  If you have one which is not listed, select a
  25.        compatible one.
  26.  
  27.     3. Cards which support both digitized effects and synthesized music
  28.        can sometimes cause a computer to 'slow down' when both features
  29.        are in simultaneous use.  If this is a problem, disable either
  30.        music or speech (see Troubleshooting below).

  32.     4. If you change your sound card (or install one for the first time),
  33.        you must use SSETUP again.

  35.   NB:  Users of the Gravis Ultrasound card must load the Sound Blaster
  36.        emulation utility (SBOS) before running either SSETUP or HENRIETTA's
  37.        BOOK of SPELLS demo.

  40.   Use with languages other than English
  41.   =====================================
  42.   When using the program for a language other than English, you
  43.   will find it helpful to mark each key <F5> to <F10> with the
  44.   appropriate, accented character.  Press <F3> at any game screen
  45.   to display the current setting.

  47.   Note that this version of the program only supports French,
  48.   German, Italian and Spanish in this way.

  50.   Troubleshooting
  51.   ===============
  52.   When the program loads it will try automatically to detect various
  53.   features available on your system.  If the program does not find a
  54.   feature which it requires, it will not run.  On certain systems however,
  55.   the program may not be able to detect a given feature - even although
  56.   it is present.  If the program does not work on your machine, try
  57.   starting it in one of the ways detailed below:

  59.   type  SPELLS /S then press <Enter> to bypass sound card checking
  60.   type  SPELLS /T then press <Enter> to bypass music driver loading
  61.   type  SPELLS /U then press <Enter> to bypass speech driver loading
  62.   type  SPELLS /V then press <Enter> to bypass video display checking
