INTRODUCTION
Software Express is intended to aid in downloading and
running McAfee Associates software.
NOTE: Software Express is a new program. It is being
distributed on our BBS for testing and comments ONLY.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Software Express runs on all IBM PC and compatible
computers with DOS 3.3 or above with an internal or external
Hayes-compatible modem
INSTALLATION
Create a directory C:\SFX and copy the SFX.EXE file into it. This
will be Software Express' working directory.
AUTHENTICATION
Before using SFX for the first time, verify that it has
not been tampered with or infected by a virus by using the
the VALIDATE program. For instructions on using
VALIDATE, please read the VALIDATE.DOC file.
The validation results for Beta Test Version 1.0 should be:
File Name: sfx.exe
Size: 75,577
Date: 9-8-1993
File Authentication:
Check Method 1 - FC33
Check Method 2 - 075B
If your copy of SFX differs, it may have been damaged or
tampered with. Always obtain your copy of SFX from a known
source. The latest version of SFX and validation data for
SFX can be obtained from McAfee Associates' bulletin board
system at (408) 988-4004 or from the McAfee Virus Help Forum on
CompuServe (GO MCAFEE), or the mcafee.COM anonymous ftp site on
the Internet.

OPERATION
To use Software Express, change to the directory the
SFX.EXE program file is located in, and run it by typing
SFX at the command prompt.
SFX's operation is divided into four major segments:
1. Sign-on screen
2. Modem identification
3. Download activity
4. Run Program activity
1. Sign-on. This screen appears when the program is started.
It displays information that may be of interest to the user.
Pressing any key advances to the next activity.
2. Modem identification. If SFX has not been run before, it
will check the system for any attached modems by examining
the serial ports on the system.
One a modem has been found, SFX creates a file named SFX.CFG
in the working directory telling it where the modem is for
future program launches.
3. Download activity. The download screen is divided into
three areas:
3.1 Download choices
3.2.1 Communications control
3.2.2 Execution options
3.1 Download choices. The download choice area is used to
determine which downloads SFX should execute. This area
is divided into a selection menu and a description window.
The currently selected download is moved to another window,
and is described in the description window.
You may select a different download using the mouse, or the
up-arrow and down-arrow keys may be used to cycle through
the choices. Currently available downloads include:
Virus Scanner
VShield
Clean Up
ProView for Windows
ProView for DOS
Each item that has been chosen for download is marked with a
check mark. Up to eight downloads can be chosen. Currently
the following download is chosen by default:
Virus Scanner
To toggle the choice status of the selected item, press Select.
When an unchosen item is chosen, the description window will
indicate any terms or conditions (such as price, registration
requiements, etc.) and also give an estimate of that item's
download time.
Information about the download choices is kept in the file
SFX.INI (currently 5KB) in the working directory. SFX
creates this file if it isn't present.
3.2 Communications Control and Execution Options.
These two areas contain a number of items, only one of
which is selected. The selected item may be cycled
sequentially through BOTH areas using the left-arrow and
right-arrow keys, or an item may be selected using the
mouse.
The selected item is activated by pressing the Enter key.
Activating items in the Communcations Control area causes a
menu of options associated with that item to pop up.
Activating items in the Execution Options area causes the
associated action to occur.
3.2.1Communications Control. This area is used to specify a
number of options:
Prefixes prefixes that needs to be dialed before the
BBS's number
Settings port number and baud rate for modem
Dial Mode tone or pulse
Schedule to specify regular daily automatic downloads
You can select the items and specify options as desired.
3.2.2Execution Options. This area allows you to select one of
three actions:
Dial BBS Connect to BBS, download, then enter Run Program
activity
Run Programs Enter Run Program activity immediately (without
downloading)
Exit Exit to DOS from SFX
The rest of this section describes the Start Dial option. (The Run
Program activity is described below in section 4.)
Choosing the Start Dial option causes your computer to dial up
the Software Express BBS (as determined by the communications
control options in effect). Various messages are presented to
inform you of the progress of this process.
Once the connection to the BBS has been established, the chosen
downloads are transferred via the modem to your computer.
Each download is first transferred as an .MPK file into the SFX
working directory, for example C:/SFX/VIRUSCAN.MPK. To maximize
transfer rates, these files are delivered in a McAfee-
proprietary compressed format. SFX then decompresses the
download into its constituent uncompressed files.
The uncompressed files are stored in a subdirectory of the SFX
working directory, for example C:/SFX/VIRUSCAN/. The sizes and
number of files transferred of course varies for different
downloads.
After all the files are transferred and decompressed SFX enters
the Run Program activity.
4. Run Program activity. The screen controlling this activity
is divided into two areas:
4.1 Program selection
4.2 Program action
4.1 Program selection. A menu of all the available SFX
subdirectories is given. You may select the current program
using the mouse, or scroll through the list using the up-arrow
and down-arrow keys.
The documentation for the selected program (a .DOC file) is
displayed. This information can be scrolled using the Page-Up
and Page-Down keys.
4.2 Program action. A menu of four actions is given:
Run Run the currently selected program
Parameters Edit the command line parameters for the selected
program
Main Menu Return to the Download activity (see section 3
above)
Exit Exit to DOS from SFX
Running the currently selected program is accomplished by
executing the RUN.BAT file in the corresponding directory, if
there is one. Otherwise, if no RUN.BAT is present the .EXE file
with the same name as the directory is used, for example
VIRUSCAN.EXE.
NOTE: Some programs (such as those for Windows, TSRs etc) may
require exiting SFX and establishing the appropriate environment
before execution.
