THE IA GRAPHIC LOCATOR DATA BASE
The IA GRAPHIC locator data base consists of 6 files as follows:
IAG.COM the file that starts the search.
IAD.COM an alternate file to IAG.COM (lists more information).
IA_GINDX.DOC this file (the manual ???).
IA_GINDX.TXT the data file with the file & graphic names.
IA_DINDX.TXT an alternate file to IA_GINDX.TXT (about 100K larger file).
IA_GINDX.COM a utility that searches for the name requested.
In addition MORE.COM from YOUR version of DOS is also required.
The alternate files lists more information; however, the data file is larger
and it takes longer to display the data. You can use either or both data bases.
To use the alternate substitute IAD for IAG and IA_DINDX.TXT for IX_GINDX.TXT
in the following parragraphs.
IA_GINDX.TXT has 7664 graphic names and can be modified using a text editor.
If too many graphics are available to IA the program does not work, therefore,
we hide files from it. If a GFX file is not seen by IA, its graphics are not
available. Some IAers move files to another directory or floppys to hide them.
I rename the ones I want to hide by changing the X in GFX to Z.
Finding which GFX file to un-hide is the purpose of this data base. The system
uses little memory & disk space. It works from the DOS prompt and can be run
from a hard disk or floppy.
The utility IA_GINDX.COM searches the data file for occurances of the input
string and lists those lines to the screen. The utility is case sensitive,
therefore, I chose to use all lower case for graphic names and a capital
letter for the first character only in the graphic file names.
The files listed above should be in the same directory. You may copy the
files to your IA directory and run them from there if you wish. If MORE.COM
is in your path you will not need to copy it. If you get a "Bad command or file
name" response when you run IAG, it will probably be because DOS can not find
MORE.COM in which case you will need to copy your MORE.COM file into the
directory where IAG.COM is located. PLEASE NOTE: MORE.COM must match YOUR DOS
version. If you get a "Incorrect DOS version" response when you run IAG, it
will probably be because You are using the wrong version of MORE.COM.
To find the file a graphic is in: 1) make the floppy drive the default drive or
go to the directory where the files are. 2) type IAG <graphic name> <enter> at
the DOS prompt. Use caps or lower case for IAG but the graphic name must be
lower case. To list all the graphics in a file type iag <file name> <enter> at
the DOS prompt. The first character of the file name must be a capital and the
rest lower case. Three to 5 characters of the graphic or file name is usually
sufficient. In some cases less is better. You do not have to start with the
first character in the graphic name. For example, you could use "ear" instead
of "bear" in which case you would get everything that has ear in it. You will
have to play around trying various inputs until you get the hang of it.
Examples: IAG bear <enter> Lists all graphics with bear in their name.
iag key <enter> Lists all graphics with key in their name, key,
keys, turkeys, monkeys, etc.
iag T4 <enter> Lists all graphics in the Totem T4 collection.
iag item <enter> Lists number of graphics in the data file and date.
