  82. Chapter 1
  83.  
  84. WHAT IS TypeSmart for Windows?
  85.  
  86. When you type text, TypeSmart sits in the background, watches
  87. what you type, and anticipates the words for you while you are
  88. using your own text editor or wordprocessor. It lets you reduce
  89. the number of keystrokes for typing long words. It is good for
  90. your fingers.

  93. Suppose, you have to type the following text:

  99. The exhilaration of using a SPARCstation
  100. from Sun Microsystems has always been one
  101. of life's seductive pleasures. But at
  102. $5995, it is also one of life's
  103. obtainable pleasures, too.

  105. Indeed, a SPARCstation system not only
  106. runs your CAD software better and faster,
  107. it can run every application you use all
  108. at the same time.

  110. In fact, the only compromise you may have
  111. to make is which of the two most popular
  112. fully-configured Sun models to choose:
  113. The Sun SPARCstation IPC at $5995, or the
  114. SPARCstation IPX at $9995.

  117. unfair.

  123. There is nothing exciting about using your editor/wordprocessor
  124. to type the text above -- you just punch the keys one after
  125. another. But if you have TypeSmart activated while you are still
  126. using your own editor/wordprocessor, wonderful things happen: You
  127. can reduce the number of key-pressings by 54.

  130. TypeSmart lets you repeat a long word which has been typed in
  131. your current edit session, or in a previous edit sessions. When
  132. you type the first characters of a word, TypeSmart interactively
  133. searches words that match the characters you have typed. If such
  134. words are found, they are shown in a corner of the screen. If you
  135. see the word you need, you can press a keystroke to let TypeSmart
  136. automatically complete your word.

  138. TypeSmart assists you from the background. You can ignore
  139. TypeSmart without any effort, in other words, you can still
  140. type anything while TypeSmart displays its anticipated words.

  148. 2.1  Requirements
  149.  
  150. TypeSmart will run on an IBM PC or compatible computer, under
  151. MicroSoft Windows 3.x. It also runs under OS/2 as a Windows
  152. application. (Note: we have a version of TypeSmart running
  153. under MS-DOS. The DOS version is integrated with our text
  154. editor. Please contact the author for more information)

  173. 2.2  Setting up
  174.  
  175. STEP 1. Just copy all the files to a special directory on your
  176. hard disk.
  177.  
  178. For instance,
  179.  
  180.      MD C:\TSMART             <Enter>
  181.      COPY A:\*.* C:\TSMART    <Enter>
  182.  
  183. STEP 2. You can run the TypeSmart executable file 'TSW.EXE' from
  184. the Program Manager. We recommend you to install 'TSW.EXE' in
  185. the Program Manager's Startup folder, so TypeSmart is run every
  186. time you start Windows. If you do not know how to do this, please
  187. see your Microsoft Windows 3.x documentation.

  190. Chapter 3
  191.  
  192. STARTING TYPESMART
  193.  
  194.  
  195. If you have setup TypeSmart in Program Manager Startup folder,
  196. TypeSmart is activated each time you start Windows. If TypeSmart
  197. is not in the Startup folder, then you either have to
  198. double-click its icon, or open it by command-line.
  199.  
  200. Then, activate your editor/wordprocessor, open a file/document,
  201. and press
  202.  
  203.      Control+Alt+F7
  204.  
  205. (Note: press these keystrokes only when you are inside a
  206. file/document in your editor.) This sets up TypeSmart for
  207. working with your editor. Such a setup is valid only for the
  208. current edit session. Next time you use your editor, you will
  209. have to repeat the setup again.
  210.  
  211. However, TypeSmart allows you to save the setup to harddisk, so
  212. you would not need to type Control+Alt+F7 each time. This is done
  213.  
  214. using the Option, Setup application... item on the menu. For more
  215. information, please refer to the chapter Menu Commands.
  216.  
  217. Now, you are ready to use TypeSmart. You type text using your
  218. editor, like you always have done. You can try some words,
  219. for instance, California. Once you have typed this word, next
  220. time when you type Ca, the whole word California will popup
  221. in an upper corner. To let TypeSmart complete your word, press
  222. Control + Letter, where Letter is the letter right in front of
  223. the word. You can also use the mouse to select the word. You
  224. might also ignore the popup words and just continue typing.

  226. Whenever TypeSmart displays words, the keystrokes Control +
  227. Letter are assigned to TypeSmart. If you want to call editor
  228. commands associated with Control keys, you should let the
  229. TypeSmart display disappear first. This is done by pressing
  230. ESC, or pressing the arrow keys, or clicking the mouse outside
  231. the displayed words. Once TypeSmart's display has disappeared,
  232. the Control key commands can be used.

  235. Chapter 4

  237. TYPESMART DICTIONARY
  238.

  240. A TypeSmart Dictionary is simply a collection of the words and
  241. phrases which TypeSmart can recognize and popup. TypeSmart lets
  242. you make and edit dictionary files.
  243.  
  244. It lets you build different dictionaries for different purposes.
  245. Why do we need separate dictionaries? When you write a personnel
  246. letter, the words you use are very likely to be different than
  247. those when writing a software program. Building separate
  248. dictionaries for different activities, and selectively loading
  249. the right dictionary, will increase the chance that TypeSmart
  250. pops up the correct words.
  251.  
  252. How to build a dictionary? You point at the files which can be of
  253. any format(Word, WP, ASCII, EXE etc), then the program will
  254. automatically sort and filter the words, giving you a dictionary.
  255. You can view and edit the words. Please see the chapter MENU
  256. COMMANDS for more information.

  258. The dictionary files have the extension of .TSD

  261. MENU COMMANDS

  264. TypeSmart Off
  265.  
  266.      Turns off TypeSmart. To turn it on,
  267. press Control+Alt+F7.
  268.  
  269. Load...
  270.      When TypeSmart starts, it automatically
  271. loads the dictionary file you used lastly.
  272. The Load... command lets you select and load
  273. a TypeSmart dictionary file into TypeSmart.
  274.  
  275. Save
  276.      Saves the current dictionary file.
  277.  
  278. Save As...
  279.      Saves the current dictionary file with a
  280. new name.
  281.  
  282. Add...
  283.      Adds the words of a file to the current
  284. dictionary. Duplicate words are not added. It
  285. prompts you to select a file. This file can
  286. have any format, MS-Word, WordPerfect,
  287. executable file, or another TypeSmart
  288. dictionary file, etc. TypeSmart will
  289. automatically filter, sort and add the words.

  291. Subtract...
  292.      Lets you select a file, and remove every
  293. word that occur in the file, from the current
  294. dictionary.
  295.  
  296. Add Phrase...
  297.      Lets you input a phrase into TypeSmart.
  298. The phrase can contain multiple words up to
  299. 60 characters long.
  300.  
  301. Edit...
  302.      Lets you view and edit the current
  303. dictionary. To insert a new line, press
  304. Ctrl-Enter.
  305.  
  306. Exit
  307.      Closes TypeSmart.
  308.  
  309. Set...
  310.      Lets you change the options of
  311. TypeSmart.
  312.  
  313.      Popup Locations -- Defines where
  314. TypeSmart will display the words that are
  315. found. In case of Automatic, TypeSmart
  316. displays on upper-right or upper-left,
  317. depending on the caret position. It will
  318. display at the location away from the
  319. caret as far as possible. With editors as
  320. MicroSoft Word and Write, you might
  321. choose to fix the location at Upper-Right.
  322.  
  323.      Auto Save -- At exit, saves the
  324. the current dictionary file. If this
  325. option is off, there will be no save.
  326.  
  327.      Auto Reload -- At startup, loads the
  328. dictionary file last used.
  329.  
  330.      Programming Windows -- This is used
  331. by programmers only. Loads WINDOWSH.TSD,
  332. which contains SDK function names such as
  333. GetClipboardFormatName, etc.
  334.  
  335.      Popup Item Limit -- The limit of the
  336. number of words TypeSmart can display.
  337.  
  338.      Min. Word Length -- The minimum
  339. number of characters a word must contain,
  340. in order to let TypeSmart repeat the
  341. word.
  342.  
  343.      Popup Threshold -- The minimum
  344. number of characters that must match,
  345. before TypeSmart will popup found words.
  346.  
  347.      Menu Title -- When TypeSmart
  348. displays words, the first row consists of
  349. the message Control+Letter. This is for
  350. reminding new users how to select a word.
  351. Once you are familiar with TypeSmart, you
  352. can remove this.
  353.  
  354.      Letter++ -- If this is on, pressing
  355. Control + Letter, where Letter is any
  356. alphabetic letter that comes later than
  357. the last letter in the TypeSmart display,
  358. has the same effect as pressing Control +
  359. last letter. For example, If only one
  360. word is popup, then, you normally press
  361. Control+a to select the word; but with
  362. Letter++ option turned on, you can press
  363. Control+b, or +c, or +s etc. to select
  364. the word. This releases you from the
  365. activity of aiming your finger to the
  366. specific key; instead you can just press
  367. any letter. It is strongly recommended by
  368. the author for ergonomic reasons.
  369.  
  370.      Ignore Lead Ch. Case -- If this is on,
  371. the case of the first character in a word is
  372. ignored.
  373.  
  374. Save
  375.      Save the options to disk.
  376.  
  377. Setup Application...
  378.      You can setup TypeSmart for your
  379. editor by pressing Control+Alt+F7 inside
  380. your editor. Such a setup is temporary,
  381. thus is valid only for current edit
  382. session.
  383.  
  384.      You can also setup permanently. To
  385. do it, first setup temporary. When it
  386. works, click Option menu of TypeSmart,
  387. click Setup Application... Now you are
  388. inside a dialog box. The box shows the
  389. application name, and behind the name
  390. usually a filename. You have to remove
  391. every character that does not belong to
  392. the application name, including ending
  393. spaces.

  395.      As an example, following shows how
  396. to setup for WordPerfect.
  397. 1. Activate WordPerfect.
  398. 2. Control + Alt + F7
  399. 3. Click on TypeSmart, Option, Setup
  400. Application...
  401. 4. Press right arrow once;
  402. 5. Press backspace until only the name of
  403. the editor left, in this case
  404. WordPerfect
  405. 6. Click OK

  407. Un-Setup Application
  408.      Remove an application that has been
  409. setup.
