Is anybody playing? I found it today at Egghead in NYC, NY
on CD-ROM. I"ve spoken to the teacher. Talked to the Mayor.
Read the files (not necessarily in that order). What's next?

Hi, I understand that Return to Zork is now out and costs
between $55 and $68. I would love to hear from some people
that bought this game. I understand it's 23 megs. Is the
game any good? Is it worth the price, etc. ???
Dying for an opinion!

Yes, it is excellent! No opening demo that wastes megs, goes
right to the game, no fancy install program, (again, saves
space), the game will blow you away! Plot is VERY hard, and
at the same time fun, Its funny too! get it, its really woth
it, (also comes with a 'trinket') (like wishbringer did,
with the rock) like a spoof... :)

I agree. This game is alot of fun. However, I'm stuck in the
first town. I've talked to the teacher, the drunk, Waif and
the mayor. How do I get out of this town? I've explored
every building, gotten the notebook, Waif's gift and the
coins. Thanks, AVH.

I'm also stuck in the town, though I think I've done
everything except open the door that is beyond a trap door
underneath the drunk (won't give too much away unless you
ask; I'm hoping this game lasts as long as it will take me
to pay off the $59 I paid for it!)
The game is nice so far, but I agree with a
recently-posted note further on that says that they
shouldn't bother with "digitized characters" and voices,
especially when that's probably the whole reason the game is
23 meg. On the bright side, it's already "beaten" Leather
Goddesses of Phobos 2 (in other words, I didn't solve it in
three hours). On the down side, not too many "full speech"
games I've seen have had more than 40 screens (like, for
example, LGOP2), and I've already counted 20. I sure hope,
at a price of $59+ dollars, that doesn't mean what I think
it means...

Pour the drink he gives you into the plant. Then "make a
toast", and then "drink" (or, "act" like you're drinking,
since the glass should now be empty). He'll refill your
glass. Keep pouring it out and making toasts 3 or 4 times.
Then go behind the house and remove the chock from the water
wheel (I think this opens the trap door; either that or it
opens "automatically"). When you come back, the trap door
will be open and Boos is sitting in a different seat...

I just go Zork today and the first thing I noted is that it
has a lot of voice that is not printed out.
My question is this. My computer is in the same room as
the TV, so I usually turn the sound off so it won't bother
anybody. Every other game I've played with sound, it didn't
matter if I had it turned off, but in this game will I miss
anything important, or is all the voice just added glitz for
humor, ect.
I'd be glad to hear from anybody about this. It looks
like it might be a pretty good game. I only played it for a
few minutes so far, but for the price it better be good,

The dialogue in this game is important....without it,
you miss a lot of important clues and information.

Return to Zork is dialogue dependent. Everything everybody
sez is important in one way or another - even the jokes.
Turn off the music and/or sfx, fine. You need the
dialogue.
Have fun. RTZ can be pretty tough and obscure at times.

Any "important" conversations are "automatically" recorded
onto a tape recorder you have in inventory. Most of what
I've "heard" isn't useful yet, but it might be eventually.
Anyway, at a time when nobody's watching TV, restore an old
game and listen to all of the "important" parts of past
conversations...

Some early thoughts on Return to Zork...
Paid $44.99 for RTZ tonight at Babbages on Long Island --
that's quite a dropoff from the $68 Software Etc. was asking
yesterday. Very impressive package -- 12 disks, a letter (in
a sealed envelope), a "program" listing the performers and
artists and, best of all, the Encyclopedia Frobozzica -- a
reference book containing every fact relating to the Great
Underground Empire one would ever want to know. The EF was
written by Nino Ruffini, a former regular on the *P Infocom
boards.
RTZ takes 23 megs on the HD without saves; although the
game will run in 640k according to the manual XMS/EMS memory
will speed gameplay. Some form of digital sound device
(Soundblaster, Disney Sound Source, Sound Enhancer from
LGOP2) is required. A mouse is strongly recommended
although the keyboard and joystick are supported. Graphics
are standard VGA; they look OK but I have seen better. I
can't understand why some game companies believe so strongly
that grainy digitized photos of garishly costumed actors and
actresses like those in RTZ (and Dynamix's Betrayal at
Krondor) are preferable to the magnificent hand-drawn
graphics found in games like Lucasarts' Monkey Island 2 and
Day of the Tentacle or Westwood's Kyrandia and Lands of
Lore. Oh well...I'm not far into the game, but the dialogue
I have heard was well performed. Sound quality on my system
(Soundblaster) was poor, though.
The highly touted "revolutionary interface" doesn't
appear to me to be a significant advance over the ones used
in Sierra, Lucasarts and Microprose's latest games. It seems
to me that the major problem with icon-based interfaces
may still be present -- you can solve a puzzle by blindly
clicking on every possible option. I haven't progressed far
enough in the game to test that theory, though. The
character interaction system is innovative but a little
contrived -- you carry a camera and tape recorder, and
rather than choosing questions from a menu you confront the
character with pictures and tapes of prior conversations.
Again, I haven't put that to any meaningful use, but it
seems interesting.
The game seems very open-ended, and the designers seem to
have taken pains to make it possible for the player to do
anything that might come to mind. In that sense the game is
in the tradition of the old text adventures. Also, although
none of the authors of the original Zork series were
involved with RTZ, there seems to have been a very conscious
effort to preserve the humor and spirit of those classic
games. The new designers have also promised puzzles as tough
and imaginative as in the originals. It remains to be seen
whether they have succeeded but my early impressions are
good. Unlike the lame Leather Goddesses 2, this is a high
quality effort and not just an attempt to cash in on the old
name. RTZ isn't perfect, and I'm still afraid that this will
turn out to be a LGOP2-like two-night special, but it looks
good so far. I'm looking forward to revisiting the GUE this
weekend...maybe I'll get to knock the fright wig off Jason
Hervey's head.

Mike--I knuckled under yesterday and bought it. I agree
with your initial impressions....played about two hours
ago yesterday, and am at what I hope is a temporary
impasse; I find that encouraging. My biggest fear is that
the game will be too easy. I am very curious as to the
number of locations in the game--23 megs can be misleading
in this way, as the size may be largely due to graphics,
speech, and sound. I'm hoping for a vast quantity of
"rooms" and a LOT of puzzles. We shall see.

Well, I pre-purchased RTZ, and I finally got it. The game
rocks!!! When I had just bought my Apple IIe, I had the
original Zork and Zork II for it. Then, I bought The Lost
Treasures of INfocom, another one of my all-time favorites.
Now, I am surprised that Infocom didn't ruin the spirit of
text adventures with RTZ. I just read a lot of complaints
about the digitized graphics, but I happen to love them.>>>
The speech and graphics are amazing, and I can't see why
people are at all disappointed. Yes, the characters are
somewhat hazy, but that being my only grudge wouldn't make
my thoughts of RTZ change one bit. So, all of you Infocom
fans that are wondering whether or not to buy it, I would
HIGHLY recommend it. Just remember that the digitized
characters don't ruin the game at all.
Oh, by the way, for those of you who HAVE already
bought RTZ, what do you do when you're done with the town?
what's this trap door I keep hearing about? Thanx,
Johnathan Fowler

I've heard a lot of concern that Return to Zork won't be
big enough; haven't played it, but I'll tell you that I
heard from early promos that it has at least 100 locations
and several thousand recognized nouns.
And now, I want YOUR opinion. I'd especially like to hear
from veteran text gamers, anyone who was already a big fan
of Infocom, Legend, etc. Does the game really stack up? I
heard it might be much less text based, is that true? Is it
challenging? Does the speech and animation make it really
cool, or is it so much hype? I take my computer games
seriously and I really want to know if RTZ is worthwhile.
