  5.  Trade Groups Stand Behind VENDINFO

  7.    The following shareware trade groups have formally endorsed the
  8.    VENDINFO file-format standard as a means of conveying product
  9.    and product-distribution information from authors to users and
  10.    distributors.

  19.    VENDINFO is a system for conveying software product information
  20.    and distribution permissions from the author to distributors.
  21.    A standard (public) file format will carry extensive information
  22.    in a compressed, efficient form.  The associated toolset will aid
  23.    the author in constructing the record, and will allow the
  24.    distributor to extract portions of the record, or to make
  25.    distribution decisions based on its content, in a highly auto-
  26.    mated way. VENDINFO will allow automation of many operations now
  27.    performed manually by BBS Sysops, disk vendors, etc.

  29.  Developers Should Note

  31.    On 9/12/93, a minor revision of the Draft VENDINFO file-format
  32.    standard (alpha-test version 0.91) was released.  The revision
  33.    involves a few minor error corrections, and a small but
  34.    substantive change to the internal conventions of the
  35.    TextBlock data type used for such things as program descriptions.
  36.    The new form will be no more difficult to process, but any
  37.    software already written based on the older draft specification
  38.    will need minor modification.

  40.    We still hope to start tools testing in September (this
  41.    should be the final test phase for the standard itself).
  42.    The basic tools involved in this testing will be the VendEdit
  43.    editor, the VendPrcs processor, and the software developer's
  44.    library.

  46.  Availability of Concept Paper and Draft File-Format Standard
  47.  
  48.    A package containing the VENDINFO Concept Paper and the draft
  49.    file-format standard can be obtained from the SHAREWARE forum on
  50.    CompuServe (lib 0, VNDINF.ZIP); the UKSHARE forum on CompuServe
  51.    (lib 11, VNDINF.ZIP); by download or FidoNet/RIME file
  52.    request (as VENDINFO.ZIP) from the Rams' Island Software BBS
  53.    (see below); or from various other sources.  If absolutely
  54.    necessary, hardcopies are available for mailing within the
  55.    United States upon receipt of $3.00 U.S. and a mailing label.
  56.    A complete set of VENDINFO information, including some material
  57.    not available electronically, can be obtained for $5.00 U.S.
  58.    and a mailing label.

  60.  Products Now "Committed in Principle" to Support VENDINFO
  61.  
  62.    The following software manufacturers are "committed in principle"
  63.    to "support" the VENDINFO standard.  That is, subject to our
  64.    development of a satisfactory standard and software developer's
  65.    library, these manufacturers agree to extract relevant product
  66.    description information directly from the VENDINFO record, much
  67.    like today's use of FILE_ID.DIZ.  They have not been asked to
  68.    make any direct use of the distribution policy information in the
  69.    VENDINFO record.  That is the function of a separate tool,
  70.    optionally available to the Sysop.
