  3.                   Let the airline pick up the tab

  5.                How can you fly from point A to point B
  6.           without ever opening your wallet? You've got to
  7.           know your way around an airline.
  8.                The easiest way to fly free is to get yourself
  9.           bumped.
  10.                Airlines typically overbook their flights by
  11.           10% to 30%, knowing that a certain number of paying
  12.           passengers will not show up for one reason or
  13.           another. Sometimes, though, their calculations are
  14.           off, and they're faced with 200 seats and 205
  15.           passengers, five of whom are likely to become very
  16.           annoyed unless something is done in a hurry.
  17.                That's where you come in. You made a
  18.           reservation on that flight, because you knew it was
  19.           very overbooked. And you are standing at the end of
  20.           the check-in line, observing airline officials as
  21.           they realize their predicament. So, you step out of
  22.           line, find an airline representative, and offer to
  23.           be bumped from the flight. You're doing the airline
  24.           a favor -- and in return, it will do you the favor
  25.           of allowing you to fly to your destination free on
  26.           the next plane out. What's more, the airline will
  27.           put cash in your pocket for your trouble. (The
  28.           amount varies, depending on the airline and the
  29.           circumstances.)

  31.           The frequent flyer story
  32.                Many airlines offer frequent flyer programs
  33.           that allow passengers to accumulate points every
  34.           time they take a trip with that airline, and then
  35.           redeem them in the form of free tickets to selected
  36.           destinations. You have to fly a lot of miles to win
  37.           any free trips, but for the business traveler, this
  38.           is an easy way to arrange free travel.
  39.                The main problem with Frequent Flyer programs
  40.           is that they change their rules or become
  41.           discontinued altogether faster than you can say,
  42.           "I'd like a round-trip ticket to Cabos San Lucas,
  43.           please." The best way to get up-to-date information
  44.           is to contact the airlines themselves.
  45.                If you know you won't travel enough in any
  46.           given year to accumulate enough points as a
  47.           Frequent Flyer to earn a free trip, you can still
  48.           take advantage of Frequent Flyer miles. Coupon
  49.           brokers buy these Frequent Flyer awards and resell
  50.           them to the  public at very low prices. Coupons are
  51.           especially good deals if you want to fly first or
  52.           business class or if you will be flying a very long
  53.           distance. Generally, you must wait five to six
  54.           weeks to get the coupon issued in your name.
  55.                But you must be careful when dealing with
  56.           coupon brokers. Airlines are not fond of what
  57.           coupon brokers are doing and are on the lookout for
  58.           tickets purchased from them.  For the past several
  59.           years, airlines have been confiscating tickets
  60.           issued by coupon brokers and leaving the ticket
  61.           buyers stranded at boarding gates all over the
  62.           world.
  63.                It is not illegal for coupon brokers to
  64.           operate in most countries, but it is illegal in
  65.           some. It is, however, against the airlines' rules
  66.           in all countries, which prohibit the sale of
  67.           Frequent Flyer coupons.
  68.                But if you're willing to take the risks, you
  69.           will be rewarded with a very cheap airline ticket.
  70.           You will usually find coupon brokers advertising in
  71.           the travel classified advertising of major Sunday
  72.           newspapers around the world.
