NEW FUNCTIONALITY ADDED TO WORDPERFECT OFFICE 4.0
NETWORLD, Boston, January 12, 1993-- The integration of electronic
mail, personal calendaring and group scheduling into one
application has allowed WordPerfect Corporation to add features and
functionality to WordPerfect Office 4.0 never before seen in the
electronic messaging industry.
WordPerfect Office 4.0 has a single In Box that receives all
incoming messages and personal calendar items including mail
messages, appointments, to-do items and notes. Version 4.0 also
introduces functionality such as hierarchical folders, rules-based
message management, global calendaring, task management and
workflow.
HIERARCHICAL FOLDERS
With version 4.0, users can create any number of folders with
multiple levels of subfolders. Each folder holds any combination of
e-mail messages, scheduled items, personal appointments, to-do items
and notes for incoming and outgoing messages. This type of folder
structure makes WordPerfect Office 4.0 a true, project-based solution.
If a message logically fits into more than one folder, a user can
store the message in one folder and link it to others. The user can
also specify where the contents of a folder are stored, whether in
the WordPerfect Office mailbox, a personal directory on the network
or on the hard disk.
RULES-BASED MESSAGE MANAGEMENT
To help users deal with the large number of messages flowing into
their In Box, WordPerfect Office includes advanced rules for
message management that apply to all message types including
schedule requests, scheduled to-dos and e-mail messages.
Rules functionality lets users predefine an action or any number of
actions on incoming messages. Some of these actions include
forward, reply, move to a folder, delete, reject and delegate.
Rules can be triggered by any word or combination of words in any
part of the message, including text strings. Rules can also be
triggered based on a high or low priority attached to a message.
WordPerfect Office 4.0 will ship with several pre-defined rules.
GLOBAL CALENDARING
Global calendaring is an additional enhancement for WordPerfect
Office's ability to check conflicts across hosts and/or platforms.
Global calendaring lets users retrieve and view several users'
calendars side by side on the same screen while maintaining
individual calendar confidentiality.
Through access lists users can specify who can view or modify
personal calendars, e-mail messages, to-dos and notes. Even though
other users have been granted access, messages can still be marked
private, and other users would not be allowed access. Users can
also grant another user access to notifications and alarms.
TASK MANAGEMENT
Users can schedule to-do items through WordPerfect Office 4.0. Like
an e-mail message or scheduled appointment, a user can assign
another user a to-do. A specific date and time can be allocated for
the scheduled to-do to drop on the assignee's to-do list. A
completion date and time can be specified for the scheduled to-do.
In addition, the original sender can specify the priority of the
to-do when it drops on the assignee's calendar.
WordPerfect Office 4.0 will also automatically launch the specific
application of a document that is attached to the to-do. A
completed status is returned to the original sender when the user
marks the to-do as done.
When assigned a to-do, a user can postpone response, accept, reject
or delegate the scheduled to-do. If the request is delegated, it is
forwarded to the specified user who then has the same response
options.
WORKFLOW
WordPerfect Office 4.0 introduces ordered distribution
functionality where a user can send a message to a specific group
of people one by one. After the message is delivered to the first
person in the distribution list, it is passed on to the next user
on the list.
Also included in WordPerfect Office 4.0 is the Filler from
WordPerfect InForms, WordPerfect Corporation's electronic forms
product. Using the Filler, electronic forms designed by the InForms
designer can be distributed to WordPerfect Office users as
attachments to messages. A double click on the attached form
launches the InForms Filler allowing the user to fill in the
appropriate information.

WORDPERFECT CORPORATION TAKES INNOVATIVE APPROACH
TO WORKGROUP COMPUTING
NETWORLD, Boston, January 12, 1993-- WordPerfect Corporation today
outlined seven components of its new electronic messaging offering,
WordPerfect Office 4.0. The product, to be released this spring,
will be the first application with electronic mail, personal
calendaring and group scheduling services integrated into a single
application for workgroup computing.
"Before we developed WordPerfect Office 4.0, we identified seven
categories that would help organizations work in groups and manage
time," said Dave Moon, senior vice president of development. "We
also identified other workgroup categories, but found these seven
to be mission critical for today's working environments:
* Electronic Mail
* Personal Time Management (personal calendaring)
* Group Time Management (scheduling and group calendaring)
* Task Management (task scheduling and tracking)
* Conferencing/Bulletin Boards
* Electronic Forms - WordPerfect InForms integration
* Workflow - intelligent routing services."
Moon said WordPerfect Office 4.0 will rely on the help of
WordPerfect InForms to round out the workgroup solution.
WordPerfect InForms is a forms package announced by company
officials in October of 1992. The product consists of both a
Designer and Filler for forms creation, fill-in and data handling.
According to Moon one of the strengths of WordPerfect InForms will
be its database access capabilities. Users will be able to write
reports directly to databases such as d:Base, Paradox, DataPerfect,
as well as several SQL servers including Sybase, Oracle, Novell and
Microsoft.
WORDPERFECT OFFICE COMBINES APPLICATIONS
The integration of the three products into one enhances the users'
ability to organize information within a workgroup. For example, a
folder can hold all message types including
e-mail messages, schedule requests, scheduled to-dos, notes and
electronic forms. Each folder can hold both incoming and outgoing
messages.
"The synergy of combining e-mail, calendaring and scheduling into
one is unique to the messaging industry," said Alan Ashton,
president of WordPerfect Corporation. "Features normally found only
in e-mail products have a new dimension in WordPerfect Office 4.0."
Company officials said corporate clients are asking for a more
transparent interface between mail and scheduling services.
"The industry trend to bundle a scheduling package along with e-
mail creates some obstacles including slow performance, limited
functionality, separate administration, separate database files,
and different user interfaces and keystrokes," said Dave Clare,
product marketing manager for WordPerfect Office. "For calendaring
and scheduling to become essential workgroup services, they must
utilize the same messaging system that supports
e-mail--that's WordPerfect Office 4.0."
The unique approach of combining the fundamental communication
applications into one is based on the premise that electronic time
management for individuals and groups is vital in workgroup
activities, according to Clare.
WordPerfect Office 4.0 lets users utilize only the services they
need to communicate and lets them customize their screen to use or
see only the information they desire.

THE NEXT VERSION OF WORDPERFECT OFFICE GOES BEYOND GROUPWARE
LAS VEGAS, November 16, 1992 -- WordPerfect Corporation has created
a new category in the e-mail, workgroup and groupware markets by
integrating the features and functionality of e-mail, calendaring
and scheduling programs into one application■WordPerfect Office
4.0. Version 4.0 is scheduled to release simultaneously on DOS,
Windows and Macintosh platforms during first quarter, 1993.
"WordPerfect Office has always offered more than just e-mail," said
Dave Clare, product marketing director for WordPerfect Office. "It
also included calendaring and scheduling programs, but now the e-
mail, calendar and scheduler programs have been combined into a
single application. WordPerfect Office 4.0 not only goes beyond
simple e-mail, it goes beyond groupware."
THREE-IN-ONE APPLICATION
WordPerfect Office 4.0 e-mail, scheduling and calendaring messages
are stored in the same user/message database. Users are no longer
limited to just e-mail, scheduling appointments and scheduling
resources. Users can now schedule To-do tasks just as easily as
they send an e-mail message.
In addition, users can send messages through WordPerfect Office
gateways to other mail systems. Office 4.0's new functionality also
allows users to send messages to people who are not on a computer;
any person can now be assigned to a printer and messages can be
sent to them through the printer.
Users are able to attach files and documents to e-mail messages,
scheduled appointments and scheduled To-do items. Recipients of any
type of message simply double click on an attached file to retrieve
the file.
WordPerfect Office 4.0 will also include text editing tools such as
cut and paste, indent, center, flush right, search, spell checker
and thesaurus.
NEW INTERFACE
Regardless of platform, WordPerfect Office's new interface allows
users to decide what combination of information appears on their
screens. They can display the In Box, Out Box, Calendar, Notes or
To-do list in any size or position on the screen. Interface
features new to DOS include pull-down menus and mouse support.
RULES-BASED MESSAGE FILTERING
Also introduced in WordPerfect Office 4.0 is the functionality of
rules-based technology. With Rules technology, all messages (e-
mail, appointments and scheduled To-dos) are automatically filtered
based on user-defined criteria. Users can define rules to search
for key words, text strings and options such as attached files and
priority of the message. Once a message has been filtered, multiple
actions can be performed on the message such as forward, reply,
print and save to a file.
In addition to Rules, WordPerfect Office 4.0 allows users to create
any number of folders and include e-mail, appointments, To-dos and
other messages in those folders. If a message logically fits into
more than one folder, the user can link that message to other
folders. When a user makes any change in a message, the linked
copies of that message are automatically updated.
WORKFLOW AND GROUP CALENDARING
WordPerfect Office 4.0 also introduces ordered distribution. This
new feature lets users send a message to a group of people one-by-
one. Each user identified in the distribution path is given access
to edit or add comments. When a user marks the message complete,
the message automatically moves to the next user in the
distribution path.
Version 4.0 also introduces the Delegation feature, allowing users
to delegate a scheduled To-do, appointment or message to another
user.
WordPerfect Corporation will integrate the WordPerfect InForms
filler in WordPerfect Office 4.0 allowing users to view, fill in
and transfer electronic forms through the messaging system.
The multi-calendar feature in WordPerfect Office 4.0 allows users
to retrieve and view several different calendars side-by-side on
the same screen. Users can grant read-only or read-and-write access
to their messages. A user can also grant other users concurrent
access to his or her messages, giving those users simultaneous
access to update his or her appointments and messages.
COMMON DATABASE ENGINE
"The first step in developing WordPerfect Office across multiple
platforms was to design a common database engine creating the
WordPerfect Office 4.0 feature set," said Stewart Nelson, vice
president of WordPerfect Office development. "We then designed
interfaces for DOS, Windows and Macintosh and hooked them into the
engine using an Application Programming Interface (API). This type
of development ensures consistent functionality across all
platforms without sacrificing the interface that looks and feels
right for a particular platform."
"WordPerfect Office 4.0 is also being developed for OS/2 and UNIX.
WordPerfect Office 4.0 for UNIX will be ported to IBM AIX, Sun
Solaris, HP/UX, DG/UX and SCO UNIX," said Nelson.
SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION
WordPerfect Office 4.0 introduces a fully distributed directory
service database. The directory service provides a common database
representation that does away with the limitations of differing
platform file formats.
The front end of the administration directory services database is
similar to the WordPerfect Office DOS interface, including control
panels and pull-down menus. This administration program greatly
simplifies the setup, configuration and maintenance of the
WordPerfect Office system. WordPerfect Office system administration
is designed for easy administration, whether an organization has
100 or 100,000 users.
WordPerfect Office 4.0 includes full directory synchronization that
simplifies administration of large, distributed WordPerfect Office
systems. Changes that an administrator makes to one directory
service database are automatically distributed to other
databases. Directory exchange is supported with other directory
services to share addresses and users.
Initially, directory exchange to Novell, Banyan, and ASCII
delimited files will be supported, with future support for X.500
and Soft*Switch slated. Administrators can administer the
WordPerfect Office system from a central location, even in a large,
multi-platform environment, or distribute administration
responsibilities to various sites within a wide-area network.
