  4. The name here is nothing strange to the followers of hard rock
  5. guitar. Even prior to his union with Megadeth, he had pushed the
  6. metallic speed pedal forward on Shrapnel records as early as 1981
  7. (for those who remember U.S. Metal). He proceeded through a dual
  8. guitar outfit with Jason Becker called Cacophony and a solo
  9. album, all firmly metallic in construct. So, Marty has released a
  10. new solo record on Shrapnel Scenes; we all know what's going to
  11. be on it. Right?

  13. NOPE! Right from the producer (New Age artist Kitaro), this one
  14. is different. So, why would someone who has finally "made it" in
  15. the hard rock arena, do such as irrational thing? These questions
  16. (and others) were broached in a recent discussion.

  18. Marty explains that he has "done alot of aggressive playing" and 
  19. has an outlet for his aggressive side, playing in Megadeth.
  20. Scenes was an opportunity to express some other feelings rather
  21. than marking "a conscious direction change." He happened upon
  22. Kitaro through a translator he met in Japan. Having admired
  23. Kitaro's music for some time, the two collaborated on the first
  24. half of the album. The other half was co-produced with Shrapnel's
  25. in house producer Steve Fontano. The result is instrumental and
  26. with a definite New Age character. There are many moody and airy
  27. moments and a noticeable lack of fretburning, which may dismay
  28. some of Friedman's fans. For Marty, it seems that writing music
  29. is an exploration in the new and different.

  31. He will not willingly focus on particular influences, although
  32. the concept of a solo fitting into a song came up. He appreciates
  33. the efforts of players such as Elliot Easton (Cars) and Neil
  34. Geraldo (Pat Benatar) for their consideration of the song when
  35. playing the solo. Uli Roth (former Scorpions) also served to
  36. influence the young Friedman to study the music of other cultures
  37. (particularly Asian and Indian). When he first started playing
  38. "exciting lead guitar stuff" of many sorts was his focus.
  39. Currently, he listens to a diverse array of music at home. He
  40. would not specify any particular bands as favorites on the home
  41. stereo. When he has just been on tour he may take a hiatus from
  42. listening to music for a few weeks. Writing and playing are more
  43. easily done on the road where he explains the atmosphere is more
  44. charged. Marty admits that he plays more on the road and after a
  45. short rest at home misses the intensity of touring.

  47. Hardcore metal fans need not fret. (Leave that to Friedman)
  48. Megadeth although still on their "Countdown to Extinction" tour
  49. has recorded a tune for the upcoming Arnold Schwarzeneggar flick
  50. "The Last Action Hero." The song was recorded in (of all places)
  51. a studio in Scottsdale, Arizona and is currently undergoing its
  52. final mixing manipulations.

  54. Friedman does not consider himself seriously in the "Guitar Hero"
  55. category. He has a "hard time" thinking of himself in this light,
  56. as he feels it indicates that the height of his career has been
  57. reached. The axemeister feels that he is still learning and
  58. wishes that he had time to take lessons. For similar reasons,
  59. consideration for a tour on Scenes has not been given. Marty is
  60. pleased with the new record and has written material towards
  61. another New Age type effort. Finding the time to record it with
  62. the current Megadeth touring schedule is another story
  63. altogether.
