  302. The best way to backup up your hard drive is to launch your tape drive
  303. software using a batch file.  A batch file can be used over and over again
  304. by executing a single command.  Writing these batch files by hand
  305. can be time consuming, tedious and very prone to error.

  332. The user level determines the number of options available to the user.

  335. BEGINNING -  This choice allows you to easily backup your hard drive
  336. without being concerned about some of the more technical aspects
  337. of the backup process.  Any options not available will be shown in half
  338. intensity.  This allows you to see what options are missing and helps you
  339. decide if you need to be in the advanced user level.
  340.

  342. ADVANCED - This choice allows you access to all of the options available
  343. in QIC-BAT.
  344. '002  Drives
  345. SELECTING DRIVES FOR BACKUP
  346.  
  347.  
  348. This screen is used to select the drives to be included in your backup.
  349. Only valid drives for your computer are initially highlighted.
  350. The remaining drives are shown in half intensity.  If your computer has
  351. only one logical drive (drive C) then it will be preselected.
  352.  
  353.  
  354. SELECT/CLEAR ALL - This is a toggle button.  Select it once and all drives
  355. that are highlighted will be marked for backup.  Select it again and all
  356. highlighted drives will be cleared.
  357.  
  358.  
  359. SHOW ALL?(SHOW JUST YOURS?) - Highlights all drives (C through Z).  Selecting
  360. this button a second time highlights only those drives valid to your
  361. computer.  The ability to select drives that are not valid to your
  362. computer allows you to create a batch file for another computer that
  363. may have different drive letters.

  366. PREVIOUS - Takes you back to the first program screen to Modify a batch
  367. file, Verify a batch file, Create a new batch file or select a different
  368.  user level.

  371. OK - Saves your selections and takes you to the main option selection screen.

  376. The drives you selected for backup on the previous screen now appear in
  377. the drive list box.  The options shown on this screen apply to the drive
  378. that is currently highlighted in this list.

  381. When first entering this screen, each drive in the list is flagged
  382. as (Defaults).  This indicates that all backup options for this drive
  383. have been set to their default value.  As soon as you change any option
  384. on the screen the drive flag becomes (Changed).  The drive will once
  385. again be flagged as (Defaults) if all changes are returned to their
  386. original setting.  A third flag (Tagfile) appears whenever a tag file
  387. has been specified for this drive.

  390. If several drives have been gathered together using the "Group" feature
  391. then the single designation [Group] replaces all of the drive
  392. designations that are included in the group.

  395. SET GROUP OF DRIVES - This button brings up another screen that allows
  396. you to designate a "group" of drives.  Once the "group" has been defined
  397. it is then treated as just another drive.  However, every drive included
  398. in the group will then have the same options.  This is especially handy
  399. for creating batch files for network drives.

  401. SELECTING PATH AND FILE TYPE

  404. This section of the screen determines which files on your hard drive
  405. you wish to make available for inclusion in the backup.  Some of these
  406. files may later be filtered out by other backup options such as
  407. "modified only" or by a date filter.  However, only this group of files
  408. will be considered by those options.

  411. CHANGE PATH/FILE TYPE - This button brings up another screen that allows
  412. you to change the starting path and the file type.  The default for the
  413. starting path is "\".  This starts the path at the root directory for a
  414. full backup.
  415.

  417. INCLUDE SUBDIRECTORIES? - Checking this option will direct the backup to
  418. include all subdirectories that are below the directory specified in the
  419. starting path.  This option needs to be selected in order to perform a
  420. full backup.

  425. AUTOCOMMENT FOR TAPE VOLUME TITLE
  426.  
  427.  
  428. Each backup session that is written to the tape creates what is called a
  429. tape volume.  You can have many volumes on one tape.  For a multi-drive
  430. backup each drive is written to a different volume.  These volumes are
  431. identified on the tape by a comment line or volume title.  This title
  432. is the only way to identify one volume from another.
  433.

  435. QIC-BAT generates the volume titles for you.  It gathers the important
  436. information about your backup and creates a volume title made up of
  437. this information.  Later when viewing the volumes on tape you will
  438. know what batch file created the backup, if it was a full or partial
  439. backup, if it was a "modified only" backup and so on.

  442. EDIT COMMENT - Allows you to override the automatic volume title and enter
  443. one of your own.

  468. This pair of option buttons determines whether or not the tape is
  469. erased just prior to your backup.  Only one choice can be made with
  470. option buttons.  As soon as one button is selected, the other button(s)
  471. are de-selected.

  474. APPEND TO THE TAPE? - Adds your backup to backup volumes already on the
  475. tape.
  476.  
  477.  
  478. OVERWRITE THE TAPE? - Causes the tape to be erased before your
  479. backup is added to the tape.

  482. Note: Overwriting the tape is only valid for the first drive in a
  483. multi-drive backup.  Otherwise, each drive backed up would erase the
  484. backup of previous drives of the same multi-drive backup.

  487. QIC-BAT displays a warning message and prevents this option
  488. from being set for any drive other than the first drive.
  489. '007  hlpmod
  490. MODIFIED ONLY OR ALL FILES
  491.  
  492.  
  493. This pair of option buttons determines whether all files in your
  494. selected path are backed up or just the ones that have changed since
  495. a previous backup (see note 1).  Only one choice can be made with option
  496. buttons.  As soon as one button is selected, the other button(s) are
  497. de-selected.

  500. MODIFIED ONLY FILES? - This option includes only those files in your
  501. selected path that have changed or have been created since the archive bit
  502. was reset by a previous backup (see note 1).  Selecting this option
  503. also inserts (Mod) in the comment line.

  506. ALL-FILES? - This option will backup all files in your selected path
  507. without regard to when they were backed up previously.  Selecting this
  508. option also inserts the letters "All" in the comment line.

  511. Note 1: "Previous backup" is used rather than "last backup" since
  512. your "last backup" may not have reset the archive bit.

  515. '008  hlp compress
  516. FILE ARCHIVE BIT/COMPRESSION/AUTO COMPARE
  517.  
  518.  
  519. This group of options doesn't control what files are backed up but rather
  520. what actions the backup program takes during the backup.  For most
  521. backups these options can be left at the default value.
  522.  
  523.  
  524. RESET ARCHIVE BIT? - Each time a file is changed or a new file is added to
  525. your hard disk the archive bit (or archive flag) is set by DOS.  This bit
  526. (or flag) indicates that this file has not been backed up.  Therefore,
  527. when the file is backed up this flag is normally reset to indicate that
  528. a backup copy of the file has been made.  Resetting the archive bit will
  529. have no effect on the current backup. However, it will effect what
  530. files are backed up on your next "modified only" backup.

  533. COMPRESS FILES? - This option determines if files will be compressed before
  534. being written to the tape.  Compression is transparent to the user and makes
  535. much more efficient use of your tapes.
  536.  
  537.  
  538. SAVE SPACE? - Only available when "compress files?" is checked.  It
  539. gives you the greatest compression ratio but takes longer than "save time".
  540.  
  541.  
  542. SAVE TIME? - Only available if "compress files?" is checked.  It
  543. provides a lesser compression ratio but saves time during the backup.
  544.  
  545.  
  546. AUTO COMPARE? - This option instructs the backup software to perform an
  547. automatic comparison immediately following the backup.  Files just
  548. written to tape are compared to those same files on the hard disk.
  549. This provides the best confidence level but doubles your backup time.

  551. TAPE LINKING/SHOW NAMES/SET CMS DEFAULTS/486 CACHE
  552.

  554. This section of the screen controls several miscellaneous options
  555. available to your backup.  The default values should suffice
  556. for most backup situations.
  557.  
  558.  
  559. TURN OFF TAPE LINKING QUESTION? - If your backup (uncompressed) is
  560. larger than the capacity of one tape then the backup software will
  561. interrupt the backup process and ask if you wish to use more than
  562. one tape (tape linking) during your backup.
  563.  
  564.  
  565. If you have selected "Compress Files" this question may be irrelevant
  566. and in fact cause what you thought was going to be an unattended backup
  567. to be interrupted by this question.  Unless you are available at the keyboard
  568. to answer this question it will wait forever and your backup never
  569. performed.

  572. SHOW FILE NAMES ON SCREEN? - This option simply controls whether or not
  573. the file names that are being backed up are also shown on the screen.
  574. Normally, showing the files on the screen is a good practice in order to
  575. check on the progress of the backup.
  576.

  578. UDPDATE DEFAULTS? - Selecting this option causes the file TAPE.CFG
  579. to be updated by the option selections in your batch file.  The update
  580. of course would not occur until you run the batch file.  TAPE.CFG is
  581. a configuration file and a part of your backup software not QIC-BAT.
  582.  
  583.  
  584. QIC-BAT never depends on the contents of TAPE.CFG.  All option switches
  585. are included in the batch files that QIC-BAT creates whether they are
  586. turned on or off.  This precludes the need to know the contents of
  587. TAPE.CFG.
  588.

  590. DISABLE 486 CACHE? - When selected this option disables the high
  591. speed system cache memory found on 486 (or higher) processors during
  592. your backup.  On some systems this cache memory is suspected of
  593. causing problems during backups.
  594.  
  595.  
  596. Caution: This option was added to the CMS backup software starting at
  597. version 3.03.  If you include this option in your batch file
  598. and then run the batch file with software versions prior to version 3.03
  599. the software will immediately return you to the DOS prompt and the
  600. backup will not be performed.
  601. '010 Specify Tag File
  602. SPECIFY TAG FILE

  605. This button brings up another screen that allows you to specify a file name
  606. for a tag file and alternatively create your own tag file using QIC-BAT's
  607. tag file generator.
  608.

  610. A "tag file" is an ASCII file containing a list of paths, file specifications,
  611. and the names of specific files to either include or exclude in your backup.
  612. '011 Error file name
  613. ERROR FILE NAME
  614.  
  615.  
  616. During the backup process any errors that occur will be written to an error
  617. file if one is specified.  QIC-BAT automatically specifies an error file
  618. name for each drive involved in your backup.  The name of the file will be
  619. BATNAME.?LG where BATNAME is the name of your batch file and "?" is the
  620. drive letter.

  623. EDIT ERROR FILE NAME - This button brings up another screen that allows you
  624. to enter your own error file name.  All file names entered throughout
  625. QIC-BAT are checked for proper syntax.

  627. This button brings up another screen that allows you to enter a date filter.
