  278. The best way to backup up your hard drive is to launch your tape drive
  279. software using a batch file.  A batch file can be used over and over again
  280. by executing a single command.  Writing these batch files by hand
  281. can be time consuming, tedious and very prone to error.

  306. The user level determines the number of options available to the user.

  309. BEGINNING -  This choice allows you to easily backup your hard drive
  310. without being concerned about some of the more technical aspects
  311. of the backup process.  Any options not available will be shown in half
  312. intensity.  This allows you to see what options are missing and helps you
  313. decide if you need to be in the advanced user level.

  316. ADVANCED - This choice allows you access to all of the options available
  317. in QIC-BAT.
  318. '002  Drives
  319. SELECTING DRIVES FOR BACKUP
  320.  
  321.  
  322. This screen is used to select the drives to be included in your backup.
  323. Only valid drives for your computer are initially highlighted.
  324. The remaining drives are shown in half intensity.  If your computer has
  325. only one logical drive (drive C) then it will be preselected.
  326.  
  327.  
  328. SELECT/CLEAR ALL - This is a toggle button.  Select it once and all drives
  329. that are highlighted will be marked for backup.  Select it again and all
  330. highlighted drives will be cleared.
  331.  
  332.  
  333. SHOW ALL?(SHOW JUST YOURS?) - Highlights all drives (C through Z).  Selecting
  334. this button a second time highlights only those drives valid to your
  335. computer.  The ability to select drives that are not valid to your
  336. computer allows you to create a batch file for another computer that
  337. may have different drive letters.

  340. PREVIOUS - Takes you back to the first program screen to Modify a batch
  341. file, Verify a batch file, Create a new batch file or select a different
  342.  user level.

  345. OK - Saves your selections and takes you to the main option selection screen.

  350. The drives you selected for backup on the previous screen now appear in
  351. the drive list box.  The options shown on this screen apply to the drive
  352. that is currently highlighted in this list.

  355. When first entering this screen, each drive in the list is flagged
  356. as (Defaults).  This indicates that all backup options for this drive
  357. have been set to their default value.  As soon as you change any option
  358. on the screen the drive flag becomes (Changed).  The drive will once
  359. again be flagged as (Defaults) if all changes are returned to their
  360. original setting.  A third flag (Tagfile) appears whenever a tag file
  361. has been specified for this drive.

  364. If several drives have been gathered together using the "Group" feature
  365. then the single designation [Group] replaces all of the drive
  366. designations that are included in the group.

  369. SET GROUP OF DRIVES - This button brings up another screen that allows
  370. you to designate a "group" of drives.  Once the "group" has been defined
  371. it is then treated as just another drive.  However, every drive included
  372. in the group will then have the same options.  This is especially handy
  373. for creating batch files for network drives.

  375. SELECTING PATH AND FILE TYPE

  378. This section of the screen determines which files on your hard drive
  379. you wish to make available for inclusion in the backup.  Some of these
  380. files may later be filtered out by other backup options such as
  381. "modified only" or by a date filter.  However, only this group of files
  382. will be considered by those options.

  385. CHANGE PATH/FILE TYPE - This button brings up another screen that allows
  386. you to change the starting path and the file type.  The default for the
  387. starting path is "\".  This starts the path at the root directory for a
  388. full backup.

  391. INCLUDE SUBDIRECTORIES? - Checking this option will direct the backup to
  392. include all subdirectories that are below the directory specified in the
  393. starting path.  This option needs to be selected in order to perform a
  394. full backup.

  399. AUTOCOMMENT FOR TAPE VOLUME TITLE
  400.  
  401.  
  402. Each backup session that is written to the tape creates what is called a
  403. tape volume.  You can have many volumes on one tape.  For a multi-drive
  404. backup each drive is written to a different volume.  These volumes are
  405. identified on the tape by a comment line or volume title.  This title
  406. is the only way to identify one volume from another.
  407.  
  408.  
  409. QIC-BAT generates the volume titles for you.  It gathers the important
  410. information about your backup and creates a volume title made up of
  411. this information.  Later when viewing the volumes on tape you will
  412. know what batch file created the backup, if it was a full or partial
  413. backup, if it was a "modified only" backup and so on.
  414.

  416. EDIT COMMENT - Allows you to override the automatic volume title and enter
  417. one of your own.

  442. This pair of option buttons determines whether or not the tape is
  443. erased just prior to your backup.  Only one choice can be made with
  444. option buttons.  As soon as one button is selected, the other button(s)
  445. are de-selected.

  448. APPEND TO THE TAPE? - Adds your backup to backup volumes already on the
  449. tape.
  450.

  452. OVERWRITE THE TAPE? - Causes the tape to be erased before your
  453. backup is added to the tape.

  456. Note: Overwriting the tape is only valid for the first drive in a
  457. multi-drive backup.  Otherwise, each drive backed up would erase the
  458. backup of previous drives of the same multi-drive backup.
  459.

  461. QIC-BAT displays a warning message and prevents this option
  462. from being set for any drive other than the first drive.
  463. '007  hlpmod
  464. MODIFIED ONLY OR ALL FILES
  465.  
  466.  
  467. This pair of option buttons determines whether all files in your
  468. selected path are backed up or just the ones that have changed since
  469. a previous backup (see note 1).  Only one choice can be made with option
  470. buttons.  As soon as one button is selected, the other button(s) are
  471. de-selected.

  474. MODIFIED ONLY FILES? - This option includes only those files in your
  475. selected path that have changed or have been created since the archive bit
  476. was reset by a previous backup (see note 1).  Selecting this option
  477. also inserts (Mod) in the comment line.

  480. ALL-FILES? - This option will backup all files in your selected path
  481. without regard to when they were backed up previously.  Selecting this
  482. option also inserts the letters "All" in the comment line.

  485. Note 1: "Previous backup" is used rather than "last backup" since
  486. your "last backup" may not have reset the archive bit.

  490. FILE ARCHIVE BIT/COMPRESSION/AUTO COMPARE
  491.  
  492.  
  493. This group of options doesn't control what files are backed up but rather
  494. what actions the backup program takes during the backup.  For most
  495. backups these options can be left at the default value.
  496.  
  497.  
  498. RESET ARCHIVE BIT? - Each time a file is changed or a new file is added to
  499. your hard disk the archive bit (or archive flag) is set by DOS.  This bit
  500. (or flag) indicates that this file has not been backed up.  Therefore,
  501. when the file is backed up this flag is normally reset to indicate that
  502. a backup copy of the file has been made.  Resetting the archive bit will
  503. have no effect on the current backup. However, it will effect what
  504. files are backed up on your next "modified only" backup.
  505.

  507. COMPRESS FILES? - This option determines if files will be compressed before
  508. being written to the tape.  Compression is transparent to the user and makes
  509. much more efficient use of your tapes.
  510.

  512. SAVE SPACE? - Only available when "compress files?" is checked.  It
  513. gives you the greatest compression ratio but takes longer than "save time".
  514.  
  515.  
  516. SAVE TIME? - Only available if "compress files?" is checked.  It
  517. provides a lesser compression ratio but saves time during the backup.
  518.  
  519.  
  520. AUTO COMPARE? - This option instructs the backup software to perform an
  521. automatic comparison immediately following the backup.  Files just
  522. written to tape are compared to those same files on the hard disk.
  523. This provides the best confidence level but doubles your backup time.

  525. TAPE LINKING/SHOW NAMES/SET CMS DEFAULTS/486 CACHE

  528. This section of the screen controls several miscellaneous options
  529. available to your backup.  The default values should suffice
  530. for most backup situations.
  531.  
  532.  
  533. TURN OFF TAPE LINKING QUESTION? - If your backup (uncompressed) is
  534. larger than the capacity of one tape then the backup software will
  535. interrupt the backup process and ask if you wish to use more than
  536. one tape (tape linking) during your backup.
  537.

  539. If you have selected "Compress Files" this question may be irrelevant
  540. and in fact cause what you thought was going to be an unattended backup
  541. to be interrupted by this question.  Unless you are available at the keyboard
  542. to answer this question it will wait forever and your backup never
  543. performed.

  546. SHOW FILE NAMES ON SCREEN? - This option simply controls whether or not
  547. the file names that are being backed up are also shown on the screen.
  548. Normally, showing the files on the screen is a good practice in order to
  549. check on the progress of the backup.

  552. UDPDATE DEFAULTS? - Selecting this option causes the file TAPE.CFG
  553. to be updated by the option selections in your batch file.  The update
  554. of course would not occur until you run the batch file.  TAPE.CFG is
  555. a configuration file and a part of your backup software not QIC-BAT.
  556.  
  557.  
  558. QIC-BAT never depends on the contents of TAPE.CFG.  All option switches
  559. are included in the batch files that QIC-BAT creates whether they are
  560. turned on or off.  This precludes the need to know the contents of
  561. TAPE.CFG.
  562.

  564. DISABLE 486 CACHE? - When selected this option disables the high
  565. speed system cache memory found on 486 (or higher) processors during
  566. your backup.  On some systems this cache memory is suspected of
  567. causing problems during backups.
  568.  
  569.  
  570. Caution: This option was added to the CMS backup software starting at
  571. version 3.03.  If you include this option in your batch file
  572. and then run the batch file with software versions prior to version 3.03
  573. the software will immediately return you to the DOS prompt and the
  574. backup will not be performed.
  575. '010 Specify Tag File
  576. SPECIFY TAG FILE

  579. This button brings up another screen that allows you to specify a file name
  580. for a tag file and alternatively create your own tag file using QIC-BAT's
  581. tag file generator.

  584. A "tag file" is an ASCII file containing a list of paths, file specifications,
  585. and the names of specific files to either include or exclude in your backup.

  587. ERROR FILE NAME

  590. During the backup process any errors that occur will be written to an error
  591. file if one is specified.  QIC-BAT automatically specifies an error file
  592. name for each drive involved in your backup.  The name of the file will be
  593. BATNAME.?LG where BATNAME is the name of your batch file and "?" is the
  594. drive letter.

  597. EDIT ERROR FILE NAME - This button brings up another screen that allows you
  598. to enter your own error file name.  All file names entered throughout
  599. QIC-BAT are checked for proper syntax.
  600. '012 date filter
  601. This button brings up another screen that allows you to enter a date filter.
  602. Your backup will then include only those files that were created on or
  603. after this date.

  606. QIC-BAT provides a very flexible date entry routine.  You can enter dates
  607. in several different formats.  Each format is then converted into the
  608. proper format required by the backup software.  Only valid dates are
  609. accepted.  I.e., 2/29/93 would not be accepted.

  611. PASSWORD PROTECTION

  614. This button brings up another screen that allows you to enter a password.
  615. This password is stored on the tape along with the files you backed up.
  616. The password will be required later in order to restore any files from
  617. the tape volume created by your batch file.
  618. '014 Verify batch file in the displayit form
  619. VERIFY BATCH FILE PRIOR TO SAVING

  622. This button produces a verification report.  The report lists each line
  623. in your batch file and provides an English description for each
  624. command.
  625.

  627. The report is initially printed to the screen
  628. with options to send the report to a printer or to a file.
  629.  
  630.  
  631. The verification report produced with this button verifies the batch file
  632. that you just created and have yet to save.  A similar button is
  633. available on the opening screen of QIC-BAT that allows you to produce
  634. a verification report for a previously saved batch file.

  654. compatible file name will be executed at the appropriate time if

  660. a 2nd copy will also be saved with an appropriate file name ready to

  719. the list of drives you selected for your multi-drive backup.  Once a

  725. the "Individual Drives" list box on the left of the screen to the
  726. "Drives in Group" list on the right.  All drives remaining in the right

  995. in previous lines in the tag file.

  998. To create a tag file first select a path from the Directories list box and
  999. then select a file name from the Files list box.  The path and file name
  1000. will appear in the appropriate text box.

  1003. Note: Selecting paths from the Directory list is very 'Windows Like'.
  1004. Double clicking (or pressing Return) on a directory changes the
  1005. current directory to that directory.  Also pressing any key from
  1006. (A to Z) will cause the directory list to advance to the first
  1007. subdirectory in the current directory starting with that letter.  This
  1008. feature also works in the File List Box.

  1011. Also Note: It is not necessary to use the browsing features.  You can enter
  1012. a path and a file name manually or edit the selections made from

  1018. want to Include or Exclude your Path/File Name in the Tag List.  Either
