IDE
Imbedded or Integrated Drive Electronics. This drive type was
introduced in late 1989 and early 1990. It was soon discovered that
the design had a difference in timing and was very susceptible to a
wide variety of errors including data corruption, failure to boot,
etc. A work-around for this timing problem was implemented in the
April 9, 1990 release of AMI BIOS. Any machine containing an IDE
drive and AMI BIOS dated 1989 or earlier should be upgraded to at
least the 1990 version.
IDE drives are designed to run with a BUS speed of 8Mhz and will
not operate properly at any other speed.
IDE drives have a basic interface card (paddle card) that goes
into a slot in an AT class machine and serves as a bridge between the
drive and the computer. It is not a HDD controller. the actual control
electronics are on the drive itself.
