  17.    Summer is coming to a close but the Sound/Multimedia scene continues
  18. to advance.  The Assembly 93 competition heated up Finland putting on
  19. a show of demos for many computer platforms.  The results of the
  20. competition are found in this issue.  I also have taken the time to
  21. go through the FTP/BBS list so there are some changes.  The authors
  22. list continues to be improved and I would appreciate any help in
  23. filling the blanks that exist.
  24.  
  25.    For all you audio buffs Island CD Creations has pressed the Sound-Site
  26. CD-ROM containing near 1400 MOD files and 500 MIDI files as well as
  27. numerous sound files players on multi-platforms.  It's great for
  28. collectors and those who find downloading the files too time consuming.
  29. Read the CD-ROM.INF file if you are interested.  If you are interested in
  30. publishing the Sound Newsletter on a CD-ROM please contact me for more
  31. information.

  249.      Everything seems to be running pretty smoothly on the sound.usach.cl
  250. site.  We are happy to say that all programs reviewed in the Sound
  251. Newsletter can be found on this site and the site is growing everyday.
  252. I am looking for a few people to help with the backlog of new programs.
  253. What this would require is checking the incoming directory and downloading
  254. new programs and verifying that they work (and of course possibly writing
  255. a review of it for the Sound Newsletter if you have time).  I can't
  256. promise much but you will be able to see a lot of new programs before
  257. most people and of course get your name in "lights" on the Sound Newsletter.
  258. If you are interested let me know.
  259.      Our second site is going through final stages of preparation and we
  260. should be able to announce it in the next issue.  This site will be
  261. different from our sound.usach.cl site and we hope you will find it
  262. equally valuable.

  264.      Sound.usach.cl users please use the 'ls' command to view the files
  265. on the system.  The 'dir' command is still being perfected and sometimes
  266. may not list all the files present.  I have updated the MOD directory
  267. to reflect many of the recent MOD files and have provided a listing
  268. below of the new MOD files on the ftp site.  Be looking for a list of
  269. Sound file players in the next newsletter.  In the meanwhile check out
  270. the players directory as we have one of the most extensive collections
  271. of sound players available.

  338. Wow, August was a busy month for the GUS! Gravis made a strong showing at
  339. Assemble '93, some great new GUS software was released, and I've finally
  340. found a windows midi player that I can live with. All in all I think
  341. August was a great month. Well, without wasting anymore time lets get to
  342. the good stuff.

  352. It amazes me to see the number of new trackers showing up for the GUS.
  353. Just as the August issue went to press, I received a copy of Gustrack.
  354. Gustrack is a new 4 channel ProTracker style composer. Gustrack is written
  355. by  EJ Botterman jr.  Gustrack supports loading of 4,6 and 8 channel mod
  356. files. It supports almost the whole ProTracker command set. The only problems
  357. I've heard of with Gustrack is that some people have had problems playing
  358. mods that they have created with Gustrack on a Amiga.
  359. I've not had much time to work with Gustrack, so look for a full length
  360. review in a future issue.

  371. Another tracker worth mentioning is Farandole (FAR) composer from Daniel
  372. Potter/Digital Infinity. FAR is a 16 channel composer based heavily on
  373. the original 669 composer from Renaissance. If you have used the 669
  374. composer in the past, you should feel right at home with FAR. Where FAR
  375. distinguishes itself from the 669 composer is in its ability to use up to 16
  376. channel as opposed to 8 channels with the 669 composer, the ability to
  377. use 8 or 16 bit samples, and use of 16 independent pan positions.
  378. FAR allows the loading of MOD,669, and FAR files, but only saves in FAR
  379. format at this time. One feature of FAR that you will either love or hate
  380. is it's 'Huge' pattern edit screen. FAR uses the 132x43 mode for displaying
  381. all 16 channels on the screen at one time. I personally like being able to
  382. see everything at one shot, but have heard from others that think it
  383. makes the screen too crowded and hard to read.

  385. The second public release version (08b) of FAR was just recently released.
  386. Version 08b fixed many problem of the original release. Among the fixes
  387. are : - Problem with TSENG and S3 based video cards.
  388.       - Bug when loading MOD and 669 files.
  389.       - Added STM loading support.
  390.       - Host of other bug fixes and enhancements.
  391. If you have liked the original 669 composer or are still looking for a
  392. tracker, give Farandole composer a try.

  405. Up until recently, Gusmod and Gusplay have been the two most popular MOD
  406. players for the GUS. Now you can add a new MOD player to the list.
  407. ZZPlay from Zwerg Zwack of Pentagon. ZZPlay like Gusplay supports 4,6, and 8
  408. channel mod files. I was impressed with the clean output of ZZPlay.
  409. There was not a hint of the dreaded 'ultra-click'. One thing I like
  410. about ZZplay is that you can see the instrument names. This allows you
  411. to read any messages the composer included in the MOD file. The only problem
  412. I've found with ZZPlay is when playing back the MOD Klisje Paa Klisje
  413. ZZPlay has problems handling the some of the speed commands in the middle
  414. of the song. I don't consider this a major problem, as many MOD players have
  415. problems with this song. Only time will tell, but it looks like ZZPlay will
  416. be my MOD player of choice.

  427. A really cool program I ran across awhile back is Spect by Kevin C. Fandre.
  428. Spect is a 'Almost Real-Time' spectral analysis program for the GUS.
  429. Spect monitors input from either the line-in or mic-in ports and
  430. displays a full screen, 128 level spectral display. Even if your not
  431. interested in the practical use of Spect, its worth checking out as 'Eye
  432. Candy' :)

  444. If your tired of using the Windows media player to play Mid file,
  445. Mycroft's MIDI Surfer may be the program you've been looking for.
  446. MIDI Surfer is a recently released Mid file player by Alan S. Estenson.
  447. MIDI Surfer supports any sound device capable of playing Mid files. The one
  448. feature that makes MIDI Surfer so great is its use of a queue list for
  449. song selection. Using MIDI Surfer, I can queue up an hours worth of mid
  450. files, minimize MIDI Surfer, and go about my work with great sound
  451. playing in the background. The only things I wish MIDI Surfer would do
  452. is allow saving of queue lists to disk, and add drag and drop support.
  453. Alan plans on adding the saving of 'Albums' or queues in a future
  454. version. I think I've finally found a windows midi player I'm happy
  455. with.

  466. It seems I'm always seeing requests on the net from GUS owners for MID
  467. files. I've dug through my MID file collection and put together a sampler
  468. collection of MID files. All the files are arranged for playback on any
  469. sound device capable of playing back GM mid files. All the songs have
  470. volume settings for playback on the GUS, so if your planning on listening
  471. to these files on a Roland or a MultiSound, you will need to adjust the
  472. volume using Phat Tran's Vmap program. This collection contains a variety
  473. of styles ranging from easy listening to rock, from classical to techno.

  522. MULTIPLAYER is a multi-format module player. Unlike actual module players
  523. for PCs, a lot of MOD formats and Output Sound Devices are supported. A
  524. nice text screen will be shown during playing, allowing you to give your
  525. own effects to the song.
  526.  
  527. Derived directly from VangelisTracker source code, it can play MOD, NST,
  528. 669, STM, S3M, S2M, OKT, WOW, 6CM and 8CM (new extensions for Fast-
  529. Tracker mods): that is, modules having up to 16 channels and more than
  530. 50 samples.
  531.  
  532. MultiPlayer can work with PC-Speaker, Covox or compatible, SoundBlaster
  533. and SoundBlaster PRO, allowing stereo in some particular condition
  534. (like the Covox-SoundBlaster coupling).
  535.  
  536. It's not a command-line program, like many other modplayers, but it
  537. uses a file requester allowing you to tag files, extract mods from
  538. LZH and ZIP files (removing them after playing it), change directory
  539. or drive  rapidly and so on.  A Setup Menu is available by pressing
  540. Alt-S. You can select devices and enable (or disable) some extended
  541. feature to be applied during mod's playback.
  542.  
  543. One of the problems of module players is the 'pseudo-stereo' sound
  544. due to module voice separation on output channels. DMP by Otto Chrons
  545. resolved this problem by using Panning, VangelisTracker used the Mix
  546. Method (imported on MultiPlayer too). MultiPlayer uses another original
  547. method, applied only to 4-Channel Mods (MOD, NST, STM) and 669 Mods.
  548. This method, called Spatial Sound System, plays mods by replying some
  549. voice to both output channels. So, a standard MOD file has voice 1 and
  550. 2 played on both channels, voice 3 and 4 played on one channel. This
  551. method gives a good stereo effect, but a little loss of sound quality.
  552. Also, you can apply 'Mono mode' method, in that case all module voices
  553. will be played on both output channels.
  554.  
  555. A lot of original features are available during module playback.
  556. You can turn off a channel (keys L or R), change a single voice
  557. volume (so some voice can pointed out), and change display mode
  558. (bars, patterns, samples) by using the function keys.
  559.  
  560. Classical Dos-Shell is not allowed, but a new shell system is included
  561. into MultiPlayer, called VDS (Virtual Dos Shell). It implements all
  562. basic MS-DOS commands (COPY, REN, DIR, CD) and something more (MOVE),
  563. into the main screen window. Anyway, no external program can be executed
  564. into VDS.

  566. MultiPlayer is written in TurboPascal 7.0, and requires a 80286, but
  567. I think it works good with a 80386-20mhz. A VGA card is recommended
  568. for the 28-line display mode. It was tested on a 80386-25Mhz compatible,
  569. with a SoundBlaster 1.5 and a Covox installed, on a 80386-33Mhz with
  570. a SoundBlaster PRO, and a IBM Model 70 (old 80386-20Mhz) with no sound
  571. card.

  589. The Wave Utilities 2.2 consist of Looper and Player, two Windows sound
  590. applications.
  591.  
  592. Looper is a Windows application that plays digitized audio files in
  593. wave format (files with the .wav extension) continuously in the
  594. background. It can handle all the types and formats of Wave files that
  595. your sound card is capable playing of. With Looper, you can have a lot
  596. of fun. It can almost turn your computer into a Sampler, a Beat Box or
  597. a drum machine.
  598.  
  599. Player is a sound player for Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher, which can
  600. handle all the types and formats of Wave files that your sound card is
  601. capable playing of. There are no limitations to the length of the Wave
  602. file to be played. You are now able to play Wave files by simply
  603. doubleclicking them in the File Manager. Normally, this isn't the case
  604. - launching a Wave file calls up the Sound Recorder with the Wave file
  605. loaded in memory. If you have a Pro AudioSpectrum 16 sound card, you
  606. can use it's feature to play back two Wave files simultaneously together
  607. with Looper and Player. Player can also play Wave files while you're
  608. playing .mod files and much more. Once you installed Player, launching
  609. a .WAV document from the File Manager will play the sound. This allows
  610. greater flexibility for organizing and playing sounds. For example, you
  611. can now install all of your sounds in a Program Manager group.
  612. Doubleclicking their icons will then play them. By installing a Wave file
  613. in your Autostart Group you are now able to play a sound of unlimited
  614. length when Windows starts up.
  615. When you use Norton Desktop For Windows 2.0 or later as your Windows
  616. Shell, you can make easy use of Player's feature to play back several
  617. Wave files after another.
  618.  
  619. To let the Wave Utilities run on your system, you must have either
  620. Windows with Multimedia Extensions or Windows 3.1 or above installed on
  621. your system. You will also need at least 1 Megabyte of RAM and a sound
  622. card that is capable of playing back digitized sounds (such as a Sound
  623. Blaster card).

  650. MIDIMOD converts any Amiga Soundtracker/Noisetracker/Protracker Module
  651. to a general MIDI format 1 file. It automatically identifies previously
  652. used samples, and automatically allocates channels to both instrument
  653. and percussion patches. MIDIMOD also allows samples to be mapped to any
  654. chord sequence and converts volumes of samples automatically. Just about
  655. every MOD effect is converted, and MOD sample names are included in the
  656. output MIDI file.
  657. This is an update to version 0.1 and has quite a few bugfixes and some
  658. new features.
  659. Also included is the complete Amiga Module specification.

  661. Even though MOD files contain some music-instructions that cannot be
  662. represented in MID format, there are many reasons why it is desirable to
  663. have music in MIDI form rather than MOD form:
  664.     * Some sound cards cannot play MOD files, only MIDI files
  665.       (eg. AdLib)
  666.     * Top-of-the-range music editing programs do not handle MOD files,
  667.       but almost always handle MIDI files, or at least allow you to
  668.       convert from MIDI files.
  669.     * There exist programs to print out MIDI files as musical score. I
  670.       don't know of any which do the same for MOD files
  671.     * MIDI files tend to be much smaller than MOD files
  672.     * On some sound cards, MIDI files sound better than MOD files
  673.       (although on many others the converse is true)
  674.     * MIDI files are more portable, having a well-known format, and
  675.       have utilities on many different computers. MID files _ARE_
  676.       the industry standard.
  677.     * MIDI files can be played on professional keyboards, allowing expert
  678.       recording/presentation of music
  679.     * Umm.. Microsoft Windows comes with a MIDI player but not a MOD
  680.       player, so you can play MIDI files as a background task (and insert
  681.       MIDI files into documents etc. etc.)

  684.   Bugfixes (yeah..) including proper management of null sample/null
  685.   period divisions, correct Pattern-Break effect, correct volume-slides,
  686.   slightly more correct tempo management.

  689.   too wild)
