  16. The following information describes common configuration issues 
  17. which may arise when configuring the Memory Aperture feature of 
  18. the Graphics Ultra Pro or Graphics Ultra + video adapter.

  20. Description
  21.  
  22. The Memory Aperture feature, on the Graphics Ultra Pro/+ 
  23. products, is an option which moves the video frame buffer into 
  24. the motherboard system memory address space to improve 
  25. performance. While not required to access the color and 
  26. resolution capabilities of the Graphics Accelerator product, 
  27. some ATI drivers and utilities make reference or use of the 
  28. memory aperture.

  30. Memory Aperture Failures
  31.  
  32. 1). If your computer has an ISA BUS and more that 10 Mb of 
  33.     system RAM installed, the Graphics Ultra Pro/+ Memory 
  34.     Aperture Feature cannot be enabled.  
  35.  
  36.     386 and 486 based ISA systems use a 32 BIT BUS dedicated to 
  37.     system RAM in order to address more than 16 Mb of memory.  
  38.     Adapter cards, however, are resticted to the addressing 
  39.     capabilities of the bus architecture.  The 16 BIT ISA
  40.     BUS has a physical limitation that restricts its addressing 
  41.     capabilities to a maximum of 16 Mb of RAM.

  43.     The 4 Mb memory aperture feature on the Graphics Ultra Pro/+ 
  44.     must be placed at a memory interval of at least 2 Mb above 
  45.     the last address in system memory. Therefore, SYSTEM MEMORY 
  46.     (up to 10 Mb) +  SYSTEM MEMORY INTERVAL (2 Mb) + GRAPHICS 
  47.     ULTRA PRO MEMORY APERTURE (4 Mb) = No more than 16 Mb.

  50.   If the MEMORY APERTURE FEATURE has been enabled in this 
  51.   situation, it must be disabled with the ATI supplied 
  52.   INSTALL.EXE program.  If you are unable to disable the memory 
  53.   aperture feature, run the ATI supplied "TEST.COM /i" (do not 
  54.   enter the quotation marks, the letter "i" must be in lower 
  55.   case) to initialize the Graphics Ultra Pro/+. Then run the 
  56.   ATI supplied INSTALL.EXE and disable the memory aperture 
  57.   feature, save the settings and reboot the system.

  59. *NOTE:  The above will also apply to EISA BUS based 386 and 486 
  60. systems with an ISA Graphics Ultra Pro/+ installed.  The EISA 
  61. Graphics Ultra Pro/+ does not apply.

  63. 2). Memory diagnostics, in the TEST program, will fail if a 
  64.     secondary MDA or CGA video card is installed in the system 
  65.     with the Graphics Ultra Pro/+.  When an 8 BIT MDA or CGA 
  66.     video card is detected, the Graphics Ultra Pro/+ is placed 
  67.     into an 8 BIT addressing mode to comply with system 
  68.     addressing standards.  In an 8 BIT mode the maximum 
  69.     addressable memory is 1 Mb and, therefore, the entire
  70.     memory aperture would not be addressable.  In this 
  71.     configuration the memory aperture must be disabled.

  73. 3). Incorrect motherboard DIP SWITCH or JUMPER settings, which 
  74.     indicate the amount of system memory installed, will cause 
  75.     the Memory Aperture Feature to fail.  While not all 
  76.     motherboards contain memory configuration jumpers or 
  77.     switches, incorrect settings will cause installation or 
  78.     diagnostic errors.  If your system has 8Mb of RAM installed 
  79.     and the motherboard DIP switches are set to 16 Mb, the  
  80.     memory aperture feature on the Graphics Ultra Pro/+ will not 
  81.     function correctly.  Check your motherboard manual for 
  82.     correct settings.

  84. 4). Even though DISABLED, the Installation software may report 
  85.     a conflict between the memory aperture and main system 
  86.     memory.  This error usually appears when saving configuration 
  87.     changes in the INSTALL software in systems containing 16Mb 
  88.     or more of memory.  Run the TEST program to ensure that the 
  89.     Graphics Ultra PRO/+ is functioning properly and, if so, 
  90.     ignore the warning message.  The Graphics Ultra Pro/+ will 
  91.     operate properly in this configuration.  The Memory Aperture 
  92.     Feature is NOT required to run Windows (with Build 48 or 
  93.     higher) or AutoCad.
