--- The Epistle to the Romans ---
Presenting the Theme. Romans 1:1-17.
1. Greetings Romans 1:1-7
a. The writer Paul, a servant, called, separated. verse 1.
b. The Message The Gospel of God. verses 2-5.
Promised in the Old Testament.
Concerning the Son of God, Jesus Christ our Lord.
His humanity -- of the seed of David. Cf. Matt. 1:1; Acts
2:25-31.
His Deity -- declared with power by the resurrection from the dead.
Acts 13:33; Psalms 2:7.
A Worldwide message -- for all nations.
c.. The Readers -- The Church in Rome. verses 6-7. Called of Jesus
Christ. Called to be saints.
It is very significant that the Holy Spirit directed Paul to send this
message on "Justification by Faith" to the Church in Rome because that
is the great truth that Rome has denied.
2. Introduction. Romans 1:8-17
a. Paul's thankfulness for them, v. 8
b. Paul's prayer for them. v. 9
c. Paul's desire to visit them. v. 10-15.
(1) Purpose
(a) to impart some spiritual gift Cf. Gal. 3:2,5.
(b) to establish them
(c) to be comforted together.
(d) to have some fruit among them.
(2) Hindrance in coming v. 13
(3) Obligation in coming v. 14-15
(a) Debt of the Gospel to all. v. 14
(b) Readiness to pay. v. 15
(c) Ability to pay. v. 15 "As much as in me"
d. Paul's Text. v. 16-17. Habakkuk 2:4.
JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH revealed in the Gospel.
The Gospel is the Power of God --- the Source or Cause
unto salvation ------- the Effect or Demonstration
to everyone ----------- the Universal Scope
that believeth ------- the Means or Method.
