OINTMENT
~~~~~~~~
We don't know the exact ingredients of the ointment but we do
know it contained myrrh, spikenard, frankensence and olive oil.
And probably cinnamon and goldbarnam.
The greek word ointment is used - Luke 7:37, John 12:3-5, Rev.
18:13 and other places it means myrrh oil. We know from other
readings that spikenard and frankensence (olibananum) were used
and that it was very expensive.
The alabaster box was actually a bottle carved from (alabaster)
stone. It was sealed at the top and the neck was broken to allow
the fragrant oil to flow.
Lets look at the ingredients:
Olive oil-
Produced from olives crushed in a press (under a big stone wheel).
Myrrh-
A bitter gum of a shrubby tree which grows in east Africa. The
trunk and branches exude the gum naturally. When crushed into a
fine powder it has an exhilarating and stimulating fragrance.
Spikenard-
Sometimes referred to as pure nard, is produced from a gum which
is collected by braking off branches of a plant grown high in the
Himalayan mountains. Branches are also crushed, very costly.
John 12:3. Olibananum
Frankensence-
Is the gum of the boswellia tree from Sheba. The gum is collected
during summer. A deep wound is cut into the tree. The bark is
peeled back. The resin is left about three months to flow before
it is collected. The gum is powdered and has a free flowing
fragrance.
Cinnamon-
Usually these perfumes or ointments had the spice cinnamon. The
crushed root of the cassis tree from India.
Goldbanum-
Another gum used was goldbanum which although has a pungent smell
on its own, causes other perfumes to become stronger and hold
their fragrance longer.
Other fragrances-
Onicia-
The crushed mollusc (sea shell) which feeds on sea weed. Somehow
the fragrance is retained in the body of this animal.
Stacte-
Gum of the ktoray plant gathered by cutting numerous
cuts in the trunk.
Olive oil-
Speaks of anointing.
Myrrh-
Graces of Christ - the bubbling, refreshing, exuberance - love,
joy, peace.
Frankensence-
Free flowing fragrance, a natural result of a consecrated life.
Spikenard-
Very precious comes from the high places. Times spent alone on
mountain.
