  6.         THE PARTS OF THE SPIRIT

  8.         A.  CONSCIENCE
  9.  
  10.             1.  This  is one of the greatest gifts God gave to man for without 
  11.                 it none could be saved.   The Holy Spirit comes to  convict of  
  12.                 sin, and of righteousness and judgement, John 16:8, but unless 
  13.                 there was a part in unregenerate man that could respond to Him  
  14.                 it  would  be  utterly  wasted.   It  is the  conscience which  
  15.                 constantly accuses of evil and leads to God. Rom. 2:15.

  17.             2.  In the  redeemed life the conscience is  still  active but now 
  18.                 assumes  a  higher  role,  -  that  of  bearing   witness   to 
  19.                 righteousness in  a  positive  way instead  of a negative way.   
  20.                 Note the comparison of Rom.  9:1 and 8:6 and Psalms 51:10.   1 
  21.                 Cor. 5:3 shows  that illumined  conscience  can  now  exercise  
  22.                 godly judgement in determining between exterior good and  evil  
  23.                 as well as the internal.

  25.             3.  The function of the conscience is to search the life in  order
  26.                 that everything evil and irrelevant may be rooted out.   Prov.
  27.                 20:27, Acts 24:16, Heb. 9:14, Psalms 32:2-7 (Amp.).

  29.             4.  It  is essential to have a clear conscience (2 Tim.  1:3)  for
  30.                 there  to be a proper reception of the voice of God.   If  the
  31.                 conscience  is  guilty the intuition will be  faulty  and  the
  32.                 communion broken. Heb. 10:22 - 1 John 1:5-7, 1 John 3:21.

  34.             5.  If  the  conscience is not operating on the correct level in a
  35.                 redeemed  life,  and still continues to bear witness  to  past
  36.                 evil  deeds in a condemnatory sense,  it can be overruled  and
  37.                 brought into harmony with God's forgiveness, 1 John 3:20; Heb.
  38.                 9:14.

  40.             6.  The  conscience does not operate on a debit-credit and running
  41.                 balance system.  It cannot subtract a bad deed from a good one
  42.                 and leave you with some credit in hand.   It can only register
  43.                 disapproval  for  evil and no amount of good will cancel  that
  44.                 registration, until the blood of Christ is applied to it.  For
  45.                 this reason no one can be saved by good works.

  47.         B.  COMMUNION
  48.  
  49.             1.  This faculty of the spirit is absolutely basic to  man.   This
  50.                 is  one of the reasons why God created man.  Gen.  3:8.   John
  51.                 4:24  makes  it plain that God must be worshipped  in  spirit.
  52.                 There  is  a  level of relationship out  of  this  faculty  of
  53.                 communion  where  God and man can be totally one - where  pure
  54.                 and actual love can flow between them.

  56.             2.  It  is  out  of this part of the spirit that we "pray  in  the
  57.                 spirit".   Much ordinary prayer originates in the mind of  its
  58.                 self  orientated characteristic.   Praying in the spirit is to
  59.                 allow  that redeemed organ of man to respond directly  to  God
  60.                 under the anointing of the Holy Spirit and pray in tongues. In
  61.                 this way the mind of man cannot interfere with the pure desire
  62.                 of the cleansed human spirit.  Note Eph. 6:8; 1 Cor. 14:14-15;
  63.                 Luke 1:47, Philippians 3:3.

  65.             3.  As  noted  previously,  a  clear  conscience  is  essential to 
  66.                 complete  communion  with  God.   Though  we are encouraged to 
  67.                 approach boldly, it is always on the basis of a cleansed heart.

  70.         C.  INTUITION
  71.  
  72.             1.  There  are  two kinds of knowledge  - sense  knowledge,  which
  73.                 comes  to  us through our mind from the information fed in  by
  74.                 the  5 senses.   Then there is revelation knowledge.   It  has
  75.                 nothing  to do with the mind at all.   This is  the  knowledge
  76.                 which  comes directly from God through our communion with Him.
  77.                 Guidance, understanding or spiritual truth and spiritual gifts
  78.                 all  have their rise in this part of the spirit.   It  was  by
  79.                 this impartation from God that Peter realised who Jesus really
  80.                 was.  Matt. 16:15-17.

  82.             2.  Everything we know of God must be of this order.  Knowledge of
  83.                 God  derived in any other way than be His personal  revelation
  84.                 is  mere philosophy and is but a human concept or idea of  God
  85.                 instead of real knowledge.  1 Cor. 1:21 - "the world by wisdom
  86.                 knew not God" - hence all the world religions. Job 11:7.  Note
  87.                 the  difference  between earthly and heavenly  wisdom.   James
  88.                 3:16-17.

  90.             3.  It   is   important   to  activate  and   use   this   faculty
  91.                 intelligently.   Many Christians miss the voice of God to them
  92.                 because  although they feel the "promptings" of God,  they  do
  93.                 not know how to understand them.   In times like this the mind
  94.                 must  become the servant of the spirit and  receive  direction
  95.                 from  the  enlightened  and  inspired  faculty  of  intuition,
  96.                 instead  of  assuming  that such thoughts  are  irrelevant  or
  97.                 nonsense.   Though there is a possibility of error here, those
  98.                 walking in the spirit will have their conscience bear  witness
  99.                 to the truth,  Rom. 9:1.  The following  scriptures  indicates                                                                          the
  100.                 fact of divine revelation to the human spirit,   1 Cor.  2:11,
  101.                 Mark 2:8; 8:12.  John 11:33(RSV); 1 John 2:27; 1 Cor.  2:9-10;
  102.                 Gal. 1:12; Eph. 1:17-18; 2 Cor. 3:6.  The relationship between
  103.                 God and man as indicated by 1 Cor. 6:17 is very similar to the 
  104.                 human  marriage  relationship - there is  fellowship and love. 
  105.                 There has to be a clear conscience and trust between partners.  
  106.                 And  there is  always  a  certain  intuition  between  married 
  107.                 couples as well.
