The Churches in Galatia (a broad strip of country) were among mostly rural people of a mixed race in Asia Minor with the Gauls predominating. These Gauls had migrated from France in the middle of the 3rd Century B.C. Note Acts 16:6, on Paul's 2nd missionary journey he went throughout Galatia. He was well received (Gal. 4:13-14) although he had an infirmity of the flesh. Acts 18:23. in the beginning of Paul's 3rd missionary journey he visited the churches of Galatia. Judaizing teachers had come among them teaching: (1) that obedience to the law was necessary to salvation, (2) that believers need to follow the law to be perfected. They opposed Paul and his authority as an apostle. This was not only a crisis in the churches of Galatia, but in the Church as a whole. The conference in Jerusalem (Acts 15) had already declared that circumcision and the keeping of the law were not necessary. However these teachers still persisted. A firm epistle: Paul has 1. To ward off praise or commendation. 2. No request for prayer. They needed to be restored before they could pray for others, Galatians is the "Magna Carta" of Christian Liberty. Galatians is a "Lighthouse" to the church of all time not to be bound by legalism, ceremonialism, or ritualism but to maintain the pure simple Gospel. Galatians is "God's Pure Food law concerning the Bread of Life". The True Gospel revealed to Paul. Gal. 2. The True Gospel preserved by Paul. Gal. 3. The True Gospel is justification by faith and not by law. The centre of the Epistle - the heart of its message. Gal. 4. The True Gospel is liberty and not bondage. Gal. 5. The True Gospel is of the Spirit and not of the flesh. Gal. 6. The True Gospel in practical life (or in conduct). The concluding verse -- Gal.6:8. CHAPTER I -- The True Gospel Revealed to Paul. 1. Greetings v.1-5 a. Paul's apostleship not of man but of God. v.1-2 A divine appointment to a divine office. "A sent one" by Jesus Christ and God the Father. Paul went forth to represent Jesus Christ and God the Father. This is the source of his authority. b. Grace and Peace from the Cross! v.3-5 By the Cross and only the cross is deliverance from sin. The substitutionary death of Christ. This is the heart of Paul's Message to the Galatians. "Christ Crucified Delivers Us!" Without the law or works! The Cross is sufficient -- To add anything is to adulterate the Pure Gospel. In Paul's greetings we see: 1. The death of Christ. 1 Cor. 15:4 2. The Resurrection of Christ. 1 Cor. 15:1 2. The True Gospel revealed to Paul by the Lord Jesus. v.6-24 a. Paul's Rebuke v.6-9 Only one Gospel is true - all others false. (accursed) b. Paul's Gospel of God by revelation. not of man. v.10-24 Formerly: 1. Paul thoroughly knew the Jew's religion. v.10-14 His Gospel didn't come from that. Then: 2. But it was "God's Son Revealed in him." v.15-16 (Every preacher must first have Christ revealed in him) After that: 3. A. At Jerusalem When he met the Apostles v.1-10 1. Went up by the direction of the Lord. v.1-2a Not by his own will. 2. To tell them about the Gospel he preached. v.2b Not to ask about or learn of the Gospel (He had preached the gospel for 17 years.) 3. To maintain the purity of the Gospel. v.3-6 against the Judaizers. (Titus not circumcised) 4. And was endorsed by the Apostles. v.7-10 As an apostle to the Gentiles Paul's call certified. 1. To himself on the road to Damascus. Acts 9 2. To Ananias. Acts 9:15-16 3. To the prophets & teachers at Antioch. B. At Antioch When he met Peter. v.11-21 1. Peter's Fault. v.11-12 Peter, who had eaten with the Gentiles, separated himself when those Jews from James came. 2. Peter's Influence. v.13 Other Jews did likewise, and even Barnabas, followed Peter. 3. Peter Rebuked by Paul, v.14-21 a. A Jew living as a Gentile cannot compel a Gentile to live as a Jew. v.14 Inconsistency in Conduct. b. Both Peter and Paul believed in Justification by faith without the works of the law. Oneness in doctrine. v.15-16 C. That being so, if we then allow the works of the law (such as not eating with Gentiles) to condemn us, to all outward appearance making us sinners then the Grace of God through Christ has brought us into sin! Christ is then a minister of sin! Perish the thought. v.17 d. To go back to the works of the law is to transgress. v.18 e. For we are dead to the law and alive to God. v.19-20 The Law has no hold on us 1. Death - crucified with Christ. Dead to the law. 2. Life - Alive to God I live - yet not I - Christ liveth in me I live by the Faith of the Son of God my substitute. f. Works of the law frustrate the Grace of God. v.21 1. If Righteousness came by the Law Christ is dead in vain. 2. To say works of the Law are necessary to Justification, is to say that the Cross is not sufficient to Justify. CHAPTER III: The True Gospel is Justification by Faith and not of the Law. 1. The Galatians had begun by faith but were now turning to the works of the law. v.1-5 A series of questions showing their error. A. Salvation Jesus Christ crucified Preached to them. But now bewitched - lead astray. v.1 B. Baptism of the Spirit. Received the Spirit by faith. Not by works of the law. v.2 C. Perfection - by the Spirit not by the Flesh. v.3 D. Suffering - for the cross not for the Law. v.4 E. Spirit Filled Life and Ministry - Ministering the Spirit by faith not by the works of the law, v.5 F. Miracles. - Wrought by faith not by the work of the law. These questions are heart searching and touch the main-springs of Christian life and experience. 2. The Blessing of the Promise. v.6-9 a. Abraham justified by faith. b. All others likewise must be justified by faith. Blessed! 3. The Curse of the Law. v.10-12 a. To all who do not do all the law. b. The Law can justify no man. C. The Law is not of faith but works. Cursed! d. Galatians what will ye chose? A curse or a Blessing! 4. Christ has Redeemed Us from the curse of the Law that we might receive the Blessing of Promise. v.13-14 a. A quotation from the Law itself proves that. Deut. 21:23 b. Christ has met the demands of the law. We cannot. 5. The Abrahamic Covenant not altered (affected) by the law. (The Priority of the Abrahamic Covenant.) v.15-18 6. The Purpose of the Law. v.19-24a a. To manifest sin as sin. (to show us our need) b. To lead us to Christ - to justification by faith As a school master. (To show the way) 7. The Purpose of Faith v.24b-29 a. Justification by faith. b. Become Children of God. c. Become Children of Abraham and heirs to the promise. CHAPTER IV: The True Gospel is liberty and not bondage. Gal. 3:29 introduces this subject. We are heirs not servants. Before: Children Now: Adults Under the Law Under Grace As Slaves to sin subjection As sons with freedom bondage 1. Bondage before v.1-3 a. A child - under tutors as a servant. We are under the law. 2. Deliverance came v.4-5 a. By the Son of God Who was sent forth. We become sons. Now we enter into sonship. 3. Liberty Now v.6-8 (or Freedom) a. We are sons. v.6a b. By the Spirit who has been sent forth. We call God our Father. v.6b c. Heirs of God. v.7-8 4. What??? Bondage again? (Do you want to go back to servitude again?) a. Return to slavery of the works of the law. v.9-10 Retrograde. b. Paul's heart burdened for them. v.11-20 He appeals to His love for them, their love for him. Mutual. He wrote in love for their good. The false workers were making division. 5. The Allegory. v.21-31 The two mothers and the two sons. Circumcision (flesh) -- Loss v.1-4 Yoke of bondage If circumcision - Christ shall profit nothing. v.2 If circumcision - debtor to do the whole law. v.3 If justified by the law - Christ of no effect. v.4 Ye are fallen from grace. VERSUS 2. Spirit (faith) Profit v.5-6 By faith wait for the hope of righteousness. v.5 The gain - faith which worketh by love. v.6 3. The Perverters (troublers) v.7-12 a. Binder v.7 b. Not of God v.8 c. Leaven v.9 d. Troubler v.10 (He shall bear his judgment) e. Fleshy v.11 preach circumcision, no persecution, no offence of the cross. f. Unsettle v.12 (R.V.) (confusion - later) 4. Crucifixion of the Flesh. v.24-26 Live and walk in the Spirit. CHAPTER VI: The True Gospel in Practical Life. 1. Restoration of a fallen brother. v.1 (As a dislocated member of the body is restored, i.e., put back in place.) Let not those who have not fallen into legalism glory over those who have, but let them restore the fallen. 2. Bearing one another's burdens. v.2 3. Humility. v.3-5 4. Support the Ministry v.6 5. Results - the consequence, the fruit of our life. v.7-8 Our deeds are seeds sown. Sow fleshly seeds receive corruption. Sow spiritual seed, receive life everlasting. 6. Endurance. v.9 7. Doing good to others. v.10 8. Glory not in the flesh but in the Cross. v.11-17 Paul's credentials. v.17 The Judaizers glorified in the mark of circumcision (of the law) in the flesh of their followers. Paul glorified in the marks of the Lord Jesus (of grace) in his own flesh. His brand as a slave of Christ Jesus. 2 Cor. 11:23-25 9. Benediction v.18 Grace! Contrast with the Law!
