Study No 1 THE PASSOVER LAMB
THE BLOOD OF THE SPRINKLING
Hebrews 11:28 & 12:24.
"Through faith he kept the passover and the sprinkling of
blood."
"The blood of the sprinkling speaketh better things."
1. INTRODUCTION
To comprehend the meaning of the blood of the sprinkling we must
understand the teaching of Exodus 12:1-30, and we must also come to
the realization that this story of the first passover is just an early
edition of the Gospel as Paul taught in Romans 5:1-10. Its purpose
is to bring release to those in bondage:-
The Object - "Those in bondage"
The Ungodly v.6,
The Sinners v.8,
The Enemies v.10.
The Purpose - "To bring release"
To save v.6,
To justify v.9,
To reconcile v.10,
To satisfy v.11.
THE SCRIPTURAL SETTING OF OUR PASSOVER LAMB
Exodus 12 gives to us the story of the Original Passover Lamb
through whose substitutionary death a nation was delivered from:
1. The sentence of death.
2. Bondage in a foreign land.
Jesus is the fulfillment of this Passover Lamb. John 1:29, 1 Peter
1:18-19, Rev. 13:8 and Isaiah 53:7, all speak of Him as a Lamb, set
apart for sacrifice. He took this prophecy for Himself on the night
before His crucifixion and told His disciples that He was indeed the
Passover. Matt. 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:11-20. The Atoning
Death of Jesus Christ has delivered us from the sentence of death -
Heb. 2:14-15. He has translated us out of the Kingdom of Satan, Col.
1:13, and we no longer serve sin - Rom. 6:14 and 22. Everything
required of the Passover Lamb was found in the Lord Jesus. Compare
Ex. 12 and these listed scriptures.
a) The Lamb was taken from among the flock - Heb. 2:14
b) It had to be without blemish - 2 Cor. 5:21
c) It was set apart for 4 days - Jesus entered Jerusalem with great
acclaim 4 days before His death.
d) It was to be a male of the first year (or in the prime of life).
e) It was not to have a bone broken - John 19:31-36.
f) The blood was not only shed but had to be applied. No-one is
saved today until Jesus' shed blood has been applied to them
personally.
g) The Lamb was roasted with fire - speaking of the excruciating
suffering of Christ and the totality of His offering to God.
h) There was no leaven to be eaten with it. This work of Christ
makes possible a complete destruction of sin which leaven speaks
of.
i) Jesus was crucified on the exact anniversary of the Passover, the
14th day of Nisan.
3. IMPORTANCE
a) The space devoted to the Passover attracts our attention, if a
great deal of space is given to any one event in the Bible, that
event is of prime importance.
b) Our attention must be drawn to this event because of the number of
times it is mentioned in the New Testament. Especially the
statement, "Christ, Our passover Lamb." 1 Corinthians 5:7.
4. IMPLICATIONS
a) It is imperative we note that what saved them was not the eating
of the Lamb, but the sprinkled blood.
Similarly, we are not saved by partaking of the Lord's Table, but
by His sprinkled blood.
b) It is important that we realize that blood sprinkled first on the
lintel (salvation from the wrath of a Holy God), then on the door
posts (separating them from Egypt), means the same thing for us
today:- salvation and separation through the sprinkled blood of
Jesus.
5. INVOLVEMENT
Not to be involved meant obliteration.
"I will smite all the first-born in the land." Ex. 12:12.
Fulfillment: "There was not a house where there was not one dead"
Ex. 12:30.
First Note:- The PROVISION
"Ye shall take every man a lamb, a lamb for an house" Ex. 12:3.
This would necessitate the slaying of some 250 000 lambs, yet all
the lambs are counted as one. "Take it", "Kill it", "Eat it".
These thousands of lambs pointed to one (the Lamb of God which
taketh away the sin of the world", John 1:29.
Then Note:- The APPLICATION
"Ye shall take the blood...and it shall be a token unto the
houses where ye are". Exodus 12:7-12.
The blood of the Lamb availed nothing until the blood was applied.
No one is saved today until Jesus' shed blood has been applied to them
personally.
Also Note:- The CONFIRMATION
"When I see the blood, I will pass over you." Exodus 12:13.
1. The Assurance.
"When I see the blood", 'I' not 'You', God assures us of our
safety. We should be free from all fear.
2. The Brooding Nature of God.
"I will pass over."
Pass over means brood over, as a bird over her young, protecting
them with her own body. See Deut. 32:11 and Matt. 23:37.
Fourthly Note:- The PURIFICATION
"Even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your
house." Ex. 12:15.
Leaven as typical of secret and hidden sin must be put away (1
Cor. 5:7-8).
- "Who shall ascend unto the hill of the Lord?...He that hath clean
hands and a pure heart" Psalms 24:3-4.
- "Having therefore these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from all
filthiness of the flesh and spirit" 2 Corinthians 7:1.
Finally Note:- The REGENERATION
"This month shall be unto you the beginning of months" Ex.
12:2.
Israel was to commence their reckoning from the date of the blood
shedding and sprinkling, so redemption and regeneration are linked.
The moment we come to the cross our lives are regenerated and
redirected. We start a walk directed by the Holy Spirit.
"Even when we were dead in sin (God) quickened us together
with Christ...made us sit together in heavenly places"
Eph.2:4-6.
"He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken
your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you...for
as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of
God." Romans 8:11-14.
THE VOICE OF THE BLOOD
Exodus 12, 13; Hebrews 12, 24.
"The Blood that speaketh."
1. Of Sacrifice. "Lamb slain."
2. Of substitution. "Lamb slain" for the house, Christ for us.
3. Of Submission. The sprinkled blood spoke of faith and obedience on
the part of the household.
4. Of Salvation. Their safety depended on the blood.
