Introduction
============
NOTE: The information in this file does not apply to Micro Channel
users. Instead, refer to your computer manual and your
installation folder for information on using the Micro Channel
configuration program.
Your NodeRunner(TM) adapter is a software independent, jumperless,
software-configurable Ethernet adapter. By default, NodeRunner 2000
Series adapters use the following settings:
IOBASE=300h
IRQ=15
Boot ROM Address=Disabled
IOCS16=Normal
Ethernet Type=Coaxial (2000/A adapter only)
Mode=Artisoft
This file describes NRSETUP and its use with NodeRunner 2000 Series
adapters. You will also find descriptions of the NRSETUP switches and
a list of NRSETUP error messages.
About NRSETUP
==============
NRSETUP is the NodeRunner adapter setup utility. You have the following
three options within NRSETUP:
Automatic NodeRunner Configuration
-----------------------------------
This option automatically sets the NodeRunner's IRQ line
to prevent conflicts with other installed devices. This option
also checks the integrity of the adapter and the network
connection.
Manual NodeRunner Configuration
-------------------------------
This option allows you to manually set the NodeRunner
parameters to prevent setting conflicts with other devices.
It also lets you configure the adapter for specialized tasks such
as remote booting.
NodeRunner Diagnostics
----------------------
This option runs full diagnostics on the NodeRunner adapter to
assess the adapter's integrity and check network connectivity.
For more information on the NodeRunner Diagnostics option, see
the section of this On-line manual titled "Using the NRDIAG
Hardware Diagnostics Utility".
Using NRSETUP
==============
All users should run NRSETUP's Automatic Configuration option. By doing
so you eliminate any IRQ conflicts with other installed devices and
detect any hardware problems early.
Run NRSETUP after installing the adapter and the NodeRunner and network
software, but BEFORE running the software.
NOTE: Make sure no NodeRunner adapter drivers are loaded into memory
when you run NRSETUP. If you are using DOS V5.0, you can do this
by typing MEM/C at the DOS prompt and viewing the list of programs
loaded. If the NodeRunner driver is running, exit any
applications, power down your PC, restart the PC and do not let
the NodeRunner drivers run from your startup batch file.
To run NRSETUP's Automatic Configuration:
1. Change to the directory containing your network program files. Type:
NRSETUP Enter
The NRSETUP Main Options screen appears displaying the NRSETUP options.
2. Select Automatic Configuration.
NRSETUP determines what IRQs are already occupied by other devices.
NRSETUP then makes the any necessary changes to the NodeRunner's
IRQ setting.
To make additional settings changes using Manual Configuration:
Select Manual Configuration.
Two screens appear. The top screen displays adapter information and
statistics. Values displayed in this screen are read-only and cannot be
modified. The bottom screen shows the NodeRunner's configuration
parameters. See steps 3 and 4 below for instructions on changing
the settings.
3. Highlight the setting you want to change and press Enter. Then select
the new value.
4. When you are finished, press Esc to exit NRSETUP and save your
changes. If you do not want to save the changes, press F10.
Configuration Parameters
========================
The configuration parameters for the NodeRunner adapter are described
below. Default values appear in parentheses.
I/O Base (300)
--------------
This setting indicates the start of the block of I/O ports used by the
adapter. The default setting of 300 usually does not conflict with an
I/O Base setting in use by previously installed hardware. If this
setting does conflict with any existing hardware, change this option
to a different setting.
IRQ (15)
--------
This setting establishes the Interrupt Request Line to be used by the
adapter. The default setting of 15 usually does not conflict with an IRQ
setting in use by previously installed hardware. If, however, you do
detect a conflict, highlight the IRQ setting and press Enter. Some
commonly used IRQs include:
IRQ3 -- COM2:
IRQ4 -- COM1:
IRQ7 -- LPT1:
NOTE: To use IRQ 10 or 15, you must place the adapter in a 16-bit
(long) expansion slot in your computer.
Boot ROM Address (Disabled)
---------------------------
This setting disables or specifies the memory address used for the
optional boot ROM chip onboard the adapter. If you have purchased this
chip, install and configure it according to the instructions included
with the chip. If you did not purchase the boot ROM chip, leave this
setting in Disabled mode.
1OCS16 Timing (Normal)
----------------------
This setting selects the timing of the I/OCS16 bus control term. If you
are unsure about this setting, leave it at Normal. If you experience
problems such as intermittent disconnects, change this setting to Early.
Some PCs require early assertion of the IOCS16 signal for proper 16-bit
operation. If you know that you have such a PC, highlight the 10CS16
Timing parameter and press Enter to change the setting to Early.
Ethernet Type (Coaxial) (2000/A adapter only)
---------------------------------------------
Selects among the Ethernet cable types. The options presented in
this field depend upon the type of adapter. Possible cable types
include AUI (10Base5, DB-15, thick Ethernet), Coaxial (10Base2, BNC,
cheapernet, thin net), and UTP (10Base-T, twisted-pair). This option
does not appear if the adapter supports only one cable type.
Mode (Artisoft)
---------------
This setting selects the compatibility mode of the adapter. If you
are using the adapter in an Artisoft LANtastic/AI network, leave this
setting at the default. If you are using the adapter in a Novell
network and are using the Artisoft NetWare drivers provided on your
NodeRunner diskette, use the default Artisoft setting. If you are
using Novell-supplied NE1000 or NE2000 drivers, change this setting to
NE1000 or NE2000 emulation. If you want to install your adapter in an
8-bit slot in an Artisoft network, choose Artisoft/8.
Configuring Multiple Adapters
=============================
When configuring multiple NodeRunner adapters, you must specify a unique
I/O Base and IRQ setting for each adapter. Complete these steps:
1. Install the first adapter.
2. Run NRSETUP as instructed in the previous section and specify a
non-default I/O Base and IRQ setting. The default settings for these
options are I/O Base 300 and IRQ 15.
3. Install the second adapter.
4. If necessary, configure the second adapter using NRSETUP. Generally
this is not necessary unless settings for the second adapter conflict
with any other adapters installed before the NodeRunner cards.
To specify that adapter you would like to configure, enter the adapter's
I/O Base address on the NRSETUP command line using the IOBASE= switch.
For example, to configure an adapter that uses the default I/O Base
address (300) you would issue the command:
NRSETUP IOBASE=300
NRSETUP Command Line Switches
==============================
Below are the optional parameters that you can include on the NRSETUP
command line. For each switch, you will find its name, the valid range
of options, the default value if any, and a description.
@ Range 0 - 3000 byte switch file
---------------------------------
Instructs NRSETUP.EXE to look for further options in an ASCII text file
that you have previously created. You can place as many command line
switches in the file as you wish. This is useful for reducing the length
of the command line if you will be using many switches. Switches may be
used on the command line after the switch filename, and the switch values
will take precedence over those in the switch file. You may invoke switch
files from within switch files as often as you wish.
You may also include comments for each line of the switch file. Comments
may be at the beginning of each line or after switches, and must be
preceded by a semicolon (;).
HELP or ?
---------
Provides you with a list of command line switches for NRSETUP, along with
the valid range of values for each switch. When you use the HELP or
? switch, the program does not install itself.
IOBASE= (300) 300 320 340 360 hex
----------------------------------
Allows you to specify the Input/Output port address for the adapter
without using the menu interface. If you are using multiple adapters,
each card must have a unique IOBASE= setting.
MONOCHROME
----------
This switch specifies that the program will run in monochrome mode. This
can help make the screen text easier to read on some monitors.
SHOW
----
Instructs NRSETUP to display the current settings of all installed
NodeRunner adapters.
NRSETUP Messages
=================
Below is a list of the messages returned by NRSETUP. For each you
will find the message text, an explanation of the message, and any
corrective steps that you should take.
--------
Message: Adapter may be in use! Press Enter to proceed or Esc to abort.
Meaning: NRSETUP has determined that the adapter is active. This may be
the result of a warm boot while a network driver was active, or a
non-Artisoft driver may be active.
Remedy: Press Enter to proceed. This message warns you that the IRQ
the NodeRunner adapter is set for may be in use by another
device. This message will occur if the NR driver was
loaded any time since the PC was turned on and can usually
be ignored. If the message occurs immediately after turning
on the computer and BEFORE loading any network software, you
should select another IRQ for the NodeRunner adapter to use.
--------
Message: Corrupted EEPROM contents (CRC) - Call Artisoft Tech. Support
Meaning: An error has occurred in the NodeRunner's EEPROM chip.
Remedy: Turn the computer off then on and attempt to run NRSETUP
again. If the message persists contact Artisoft Technical
Support. The adapter may need service.
--------
Message: Corrupted EEPROM contents (SIG) - Call Artisoft Tech. Support

Meaning: No NodeRunner parameters have changed. Writing to the EEPROM
is not required.
Remedy: Status message only. Press Enter to continue.
-------
Message: NodeRunner controller failure -- possible I/O Base conflict.
Meaning: You have another device already using the NodeRunner's
I/O Base address.
Remedy: Relocate the conflicting device to another I/O Base address. Or
run the NRMOVE utility, followed by NRSETUP, to specify a
different I/O Base address for the NodeRunner adapter.
--------
Message: No NodeRunner adapters detected.
Meaning: You attempted to run NRSETUP or use the NRSETUP SHOW command, but
the program was unable to find any NodeRunner adapters, or an
I/O Base conflict exists between the NodeRunner adapter and
another card.
Remedy: Make sure the adapter is installed in an expansion slot of your
PC before running NRSETUP, or remove conflicting hardware.
--------
Message: NodeRunner at I/O Base hhh is currently active - Cannot access
configuration.
Meaning: You have issued the NRSETUP SHOW command while a network driver
is loaded.
Remedy: Power down the computer, then restart it without running the
network software. You may then show NodeRunner status.
-------
Message: Onboard memory failure -- possible I/O Base conflict or IOCS16
timing.
Meaning: The diagnostic has failed the memory test.
Remedy: Run the Automatic Configuration option. Or use Manual
Configuration to reset the IOCS16 timing parameter. If the
problem persists, check for an I/O Base conflict.
--------
Message: Selected IRQ is in use. Press Enter to proceed. Esc to abort.
Meaning: The IRQ you have selected is currently in use.
Remedy: Select a different IRQ.
-------
Message: Unable to communicate with adapter installed in 16-bit slot.
Meaning: The Automatic Configuration option cannot get reliable data
transfers with either IOCS16 option.
Remedy: Check for possible I/O Base conflict. If none found, contact
Artisoft Technical Support.
-------
Message: Unable to determine cable type -- check network connection.
Meaning: The Automatic Configuration option cannot successfully transmit a
packet on any of the adapter's ports.
Remedy: Check to make sure the NodeRunner's network cable connections
are secure.
--------
Message: Unable to locate NodeRunner Controller
Meaning: NRSETUP cannot detect any NodeRunner adapters installed in
the PC, or there is an I/O Base conflict with another hardware.
Remedy: Try using NRMOVE to eliminate the I/O Base conflict. See the
NRMOVE file in the On-line Manual for instructions. If NRMOVE
does not solve the problem, remove the conflicting hardware or
configure the NodeRunner in another PC.
--------
Message: Unknown adapter type
Meaning: The installed NodeRunner adapter is not known to this version
of NRSETUP.
Remedy: Upgrade to a newer version of NRSETUP.
