  39. San Jose, Ca, August 2, 1993--In order to provide end users with
  40. the safest, robust and most reliable data compression technology
  41. available in the industry, Novell, Inc. today announced the
  42. inclusion of Stacker, the de facto industry standard data
  43. compression software from Stac Electronics,  in Novell DOS 7. 
  44. Through a strategic development agreement, Stac has granted
  45. Novell a license for Novell networks and operating systems which
  46. could as much as double the storage capacity of network servers
  47. and workstations that currently do not compress data, as well as
  48. facilitate  the transmission of compressed data throughout the
  49. network.  Novell DOS 7 reflects the company's commitment to the
  50. world's largest installed base and the needs of DOS customers
  51. worldwide for enhancedfunctionality and better networking
  52. support.

  54. The integration of Novell DOS 7 and Stacker enables the data
  55. compression device driver to execute in protected memory,
  56. providing customers better performance and more conventional
  57. memory for running applications.  Additionally, customers can use
  58. existing hardware because data compression technology enables end
  59. users to have up to twice the storage capacity than without
  60. compression technology,  leveraging their investment in hardware.

  63. without having to upgrade their hardware means that customers get
  64. the most power from existing investments in technology,"  said
  65. Steve Tucker,  vice president and general manager of Novell's
  66. Desktop Systems Group.  "Novell is providing its customers with

  68. today's complex computing environment."

  76. Stacker will fully support Novell's new technology known as DOS
  77. Protected Mode Services (DPMS) to further reduce its conventional
  78. and upper memory requirements.  DPMS is an API that allows device
  79. drivers and TSRs to reside in extended memory and execute in
  80. protected mode on 286, 386 and 486 computers, thus providing
  81. additional conventional and upper memory for DOS applications and
  82. Microsoft Windows.  Using DPMS compatible software, customers can
  83. configure feature rich systems with substantially more
  84. conventional and upper memory.  DPMS is DOS version independent
  85. and is fully compatible with Microsoft Windows.

  87. With the industry's current concern over disk compression
  88. technology at the desktop level, Tucker stated Novell is ensuring
  89. its customers that they will receive the most reliable data
  90. compression technology through the integration of Stacker with
  91. Novell DOS 7.  "Through partnerships with leading technology
  92. developers such as Stac Electronics, Novell is providing
  93. technically superior products to our customers, " he said.

  95. Novell DOS 7, the first network-ready DOS, is designed to be easy
  96. to use, install and administer.  Its disk management utilities
  97. and disk caching fully support Stacker's compressed drives
  98. providing consistency and simplifying the end user's use of
  99. compressed drives.  Other additions to Novell DOS 7 that will
  100. significantly extend DOS technology include NetWare client
  101. support, network installation, peer-to-peer networking, a SNMP 
  102. network management agent, pre-emptive multitasking, desktop
  103. security and enhanced memory management, backup and virus
  104. protection, and DOS and Microsoft Windows user interfaces. 
  105. Novell DOS 7, available in September, is the first major upgrade
  106. to DR DOS to be released from Novell's Desktop Systems Group.

  130. Development Agreement Gives Novell Multi-Platform License to

  133. PROVO, Utah -- August 2, 1993 -- Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ:NOVL)
  134. announced today that it has selected Stac Electronics'
  135. (NASDAQ:STAC) Stacker LZS as a data compression standard for its
  136. operating systems and network services.  Under a strategic
  137. development agreement, Stac has granted Novell a multi-platform
  138. license to Stac's patented compression technology and has agreed
  139. to work closely with Novell to develop new compression products
  140. for Novell networks and operating systems. Stac's Stacker LZS
  141. Compression technology will be integrated into the forthcoming
  142. release of Novell DOS 7.  Subsequent work under the strategic
  143. development agreement includes making stacker LZS compression
  144. technology available for NetWare network operating system
  145. products.  The use of Stacker on Novell networks that currently
  146. do not compress data could as much as double the storage capacity
  147. of network servers and workstations as well as facilitate the
  148. transmission of compressed data throughout the network.

  190. of DOS customers for enhanced functionality and better networking
  191. support, Novell today announced Novell DOS 7, the next generation
  192. DOS and a major upgrade to DR DOS 6.0.  Novell DOS 7, available
  193. this summer, will significantly extend DOS technology and enhance
  194. the core functionality of DR DOS by including integrated NetWare
  195. client support, peer-to-peer networking, a network management
  196. agent, network installation, pre-emptive multitasking, enhanced
  197. memory management and desktop security, as well as a suite of
  198. protected mode drivers.  Novell DOS 7 is the first major DOS
  199. upgrade to be released from Novell's Desktop Systems Group.

  226. DPMS is a DOS version-independent and Microsoft Windows-
  227. compatible API that provides protected mode support for device
  228. drivers and TSRs.  By implementing DPMS, developers can easily
  229. add functionality and reduce conventional memory requirements of
  230. their programs.  The API is available now as a Software
  231. Developers Kit (SDK) to third party developers.  Developers will
  232. be able to license and distribute DPMS free of royalty charges. 
  233. Novell DOS 7 will include several DPMS client components
  234. including disk cache and compression drivers, a peer-to-peer
  235. server, and CD-ROM extensions.  The DPMS SDK is priced at $195
  236. and is available through Novell's Professional Developers
  237. Program.

  257. announced the addition of fully integrated utilities from Fifth
  258. Generation Systems.  These utilities are designed to protect
  259. users from virus infection and provide reliable, high performance
  260. backup all through easy to use, full screen interfaces.

  263. Windows, Macintosh, UnixWare and NetWare utility software for

  276. Search & Destroy is Fifth Generation's anti-virus utility for DOS
  277. and Microsoft Windows.  While memory resident, Search & Destroy
  278. is the least memory intensive virus monitor available in the
  279. industry.  Also included is an ongoing virus scanner and removal
  280. utility, to provide reliable protection for executable,
  281. compressed and archived files.  Novell DOS 7 also includes Fifth
  282. Generation's Fastback Express, a fully integrated backup and
  283. restore utility for DOS and Microsoft Windows.  Utilizing DMA
  284. (Direct Memory Access), Fastback Express provides high
  285. performance and reliable backup and restore functionality to
  286. users.  Fastback Express is NetWare-aware, ensuring preservation
  287. and restoration of all NetWare file attributes, which saves time
  288. and is a convenience factor for NetWare users using Novell DOS 7.
