A few notes concerning FracTerm V1.02:
Our previous version of the FracTerm program had the annoying habit
of reporting corrupt images for every second image received under
certain circumstances. The same circumstances led to associated
text files being recieved, but stored as 0-byte files. Both of these
bugs have been fixed.
A few minor display bugs, notably with odd-sized images, have been
fixed.
There is one remaining known "bug" which isn't really a bug. Using the
full-screen editor that TBBS uses, the top line of the screen scrolls,
and the bottom line ends up one line too high on the screen. Since
the editor still works, this is a purely cosmetic problem.
Downloading:
Some confusion has arise about our downloading facility. This is
understandable when one considers how most terminal emulation software
operates. Typically, pressing Page Down pops up a menu of 6 or 8
different protocols, you select the protocol, and the transfer starts.
FracTerm uses only the Zmodem protocol. Pressing Page Down, therefore,
does not present a menu, it simply starts the Zmodem receive.
There are only two keys active during a Zmodem download. Pressing
CTRL_X will cancel the receive. Pressing ALT-V will toggle the
FIF Viewer on or off.
New Features:
Fine Tuning Your System
It would seem that on some systems, FracTerm behaves somewhat erratically.
This is caused by timing conflicts due to some basic assumptions about
how the system hardware operates. In short, it works on our development
hardware, but may act a bit flaky at times on your hardware.
In order to fix this, I have added a command-line option that can be
used to fine-tune the operation for your system. All you need to do is
specify a numeric value (0-3) on the command-line, as follows:
FracTerm 3
The larger the value, the more responsive the program is to changes in
your system, such as characters being typed on the keyboard or serial
interrupts. However, higher values also increase the amount of
processing power required to simply run the system.
Password Keystroke
One of the nicer features of many terminal programs is the ability to
press some key, and have it type out your password for whatever
system you are logged onto. Well, what about FracTerm? It now
has this feature, too.
Once you have connected to a BBS, typically you are asked for your name
and password. You still have to type your name manually (sorry), but
having done this, simply press F10, and your password will be sent
to the BBS.
Status Line Flags
You will notice a status line at the bottom of the screen. On this
status line are such things as the port, current baud rate, time,
and a copyright notice. There are also several characters which
indicate the current configuration. Specifically, they are:
C/c - Carrier detected/not detected, respectively.
E/e - Echo locally on/off. This is the same as Half/Full duplex.
L/l - Add linefeeds on/off.
V/v - Viewer enabled/disabled.
Known limitations:
FracTerm still does not work with either the Paradise or the Trident
video boards. There may be other video cards that do not work with
FracTerm.
Video cards known to work with FracTerm
ATI VGA Wonder
ATI VGA XL
Pixel HiColor
Video cards known NOT to work with FracTerm
Paradise
Trident
If you have a video card that is not listed in either category, and
you have shown that it does (or does not) work with FracTerm, please
report any error or warning messages ("Video mode not supported on
this card", for example), plus the card type, and if possible the
memory installed on it.
Bug reports:
While every attempt has been made to locate and repair known bugs, it
is almost guaranteed that any program will still have the occasional
problems. As you can see from the comments above, FracTerm is no
exception.
If you should find another bug or compatibility problem, we would like
to hear about it. If possible, we'd like you to include a list of all
your system hardware (video card type, CPU type, Sound cards - the works)
plus copies of your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files.
Please send all comments, criticisms and bug reports to:
