Mah Jongg Tile Set Description
Tile Set Name: MJ-MUSIC.TIL
Subject: Some favorite rock/pop/blues/jazz artists
Created by: Cheryl Anderson
Description:
There are no suits or wild cards, etc.; the only pattern I used is, obviously,
following the alphabet. Restricting myself that way helped me choose only 36
of my favorite artists, but it also forced me to include artists that I only
like, but don't love.
Tiles:
Allman Brothers Blood, Sweat, & Tears
Eric Clapton Dire Straits
Melissa Etheridge Foreigner
Art Garfunkel Hoopsnakes
Indigo Girls Janis Joplin
Kinks Led Zeppelin
Moody Blues Notting Hillbillies
Roy Orbison Jean-Luc Ponty
Queen Chris Rhea
Jim Steinman Traffic
U2 Stevie Ray Vaughn
Who Texas
Yardbirds Warren Zevon
Aerosmith Fleetwood Mac
Leo Kottke K.D. Lang
John Mayall Van Morrison
Charlie Parker Santana
Cat Stevens Neil Young
Some of the other artists I admire, respect, and enjoy:
King Sunny Ade/ Joan Armatrading/ Joan Baez/ Band/ Beatles/ Blind Faith/
Buckwheat Zydeco/ Jimmy Buffett/ Byrds/ J.J. Cale/ Leonard Cohen/ Chick Corea/
Cream/ Creedence Clearwater Revival/ CSNY/ Miles Davis/ Bo Diddley/ Dire
Straits/ Dr. Hook/ Doors/ Earth, Wind, & Fire/ Enya/ Roberta Flack/ Guns 'n'
Roses/ Heart/ Jimi Hendrix/ Herbie Hancock/ Tommy James and the Shondells/
Rickie Lee Jones/ Jethro Tull/ Kronos Quartet/ Adrian Legg/ Lynyrd Skynyrd/
Bob Marley/ Meatloaf/ John Mellencamp/ Steve Miller/ Joni Mitchell/ Tom
Petty/ The Pretenders/ Leon Russel/ Bob Seger/ Simon and Garfunkel/ Bruce
Springsteen/ Spyro Gyra/ Rod Stewart/ Rolling Stones/ Barbra Streisand/ Styx/
George Thorogood and the Destroyers/ Three Dog Night/ Bonnie Tyler/ Van Halen/
Suzanne Vega/ Grover Washington, jr./ Muddy Waters/ Weather Report/ Tim
Weisburg/ The Wolverines/
Well, I could keep going, but you probably get the idea.
I have a surprise for anyone who sends a letter or card telling me they know
who Jim Steinman is.
My main reason for sharing this is to further extend my interests. If any of
you find yourself in pretty close agreement with my taste, please send me a
list of artists you admire that I didn't include. Maybe I know them and for
some reason just don't care for them (like the Talking Heads are very
talented, but I only like one of their songs, or like Pink Floyd - "THE WALL"
was a great movie but I just can't listen to their music), or maybe I just
forgot them, or maybe I don't know them and need to! (I especially hope to
learn more about international music and about hip-hop and dance, etc. - just
explain it all to me, please.)
One difficulty I had making these lists is that I don't yet own enough works
by all these artists to be positive of my opinion. For example, I've heard
about Leonard Cohen, I've heard one of his songs on the radio, and I've heard
covered versions of others. But I sure would like to hear one of his albums
com- plete. Too bad we can't share music as easily as we can share tile sets!
Or does somebody feel an empathy with my personality based on my taste in
music? I'd enjoy having a pen pal who understands this part of me.
This is my second tile set.
My first was SCREENS! (SCREENS!.TIL, xevious # 528)
Thanks Nels! (no relation)
