THE DEFAULT SETTINGS
When you run Graphmatica without any GRAPHMAT.INI file, the following settings
are in effect:
Start of range: (-8.0, *) End of range: (8.0, *)
Fineness: 1.0 ** DrawMode: Lines
Legends: ON Warnings: OFF
Printer: OFF AutoRedraw: ON
Theta range: 0 to 6.28 (2π) AutoNum: 1
This provides a basic rectangular grid of decent size with the origin
centered, a square aspect ratio (a 1x1 square on the grid really LOOKS
square), and a good resolution graph.

to provide a square aspect ratio.
** on CGA systems fineness is automatically set down to 0.75 to speed up
graphing.

VIEWING THE SETTINGS
The current settings are almost always displayed whenever you change one
of them. Every item under Options (unless aborted) will bring up the settings
screen. You can also look at them manually by selecting Settings in the
Options menu. Press PgDn for help on Fineness.
ADJUSTING THE FINENESS
The fineness factor determines the resolution of the graph, and in effect, the
amount of time it takes to draw it. The fineness factor of 1 is quite adequate
in most circumstances. Graphmatica's SmartFineness feature dynamically adjusts
the actual step rate, making the manual fineness adjustment almost obsolete.
SmartFineness automatically decreases the fineness when the point being
graphed is not on the screen to speed up blank areas, then recovers automat-
ically and backtracks to the spot where the graph comes on-screen again. It
also varies the fineness with the slope of the equation being graphed--less
when the slope is near-horizontal, greater when the slope tends toward
vertical, so steep graphs are tracked more effectively. As the fineness is
increased, the curve will become smoother--to a point. Remember that for any
increase in the fineness factor, there will be a proportional increase in the
time it takes to draw a graph.
The fineness factor also controls the step rate for polar graphs,
parametric equations, and dif-eqs, although the latter two are not quite as
easy to control (you may need to adjust the fineness manually in some cases).
To change the fineness factor, select Fineness from the Options menu. Any
value greater than zero is valid, but I would not recommend going below 0.25,
as the image quality suffers and the graphs begin to look like modern art.
Also, a factor greater than 5 may overflow internal data structures and
actually cause the graph to display incorrectly when the screen is redrawn.

MISCELLANEOUS OPTIONS
AutoRedraw - Turn AutoRedraw on/off and set the number of equations that are
redraw automatically after each grid change. This option is described in
detail in the Redraw help file.
Warnings - Turn display of Warning Error messages (those like Division by zero
that can be ignored except for a few points) on or off. By default, these
warning messages are suppressed, because they slow down graphing and cover
up the equation. If something goes wrong and you don't know why, you can
turn on the warning messages using this option and redraw it to see what
the problem is.
Tables - Turn printer output of tables of plotted points on or off. This
feature is useful in some cases but slow (and wastes paper)
Draw Mode - Graphmatica can render graphs either by just drawing a dot for
each point it calculates or by drawing lines to "connect the dots." By
default, graphs are drawn using lines, since it is only a little slower and
this makes the graphs much more visible. If you want, however, you can
change the drawing mode to "dots" using this command.
