Feed Cards.
Personal Ancestral File is a registered trademark of the Corporation of the
President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Hardware Requirements
---------------------
PAFCARDS runs on all classes of MS-DOS compatible computers.
Memory requirements of 512K, are necessary
The program supports Epson 24 pin, compatible dot matrix printers.
Using PAFCARDS
--------------
Configuration of PAFCARDS is required to run this version. This version of the
program assumes that the program will be run from current DOS directory. For

expected errors may occur while printing if you don't.
To run Configuration:
Type: CD C:\PAF

After Permanent Configuration of PAFCARDS has been setup, you can either use
Temporary Configurations, Main Menu option 5, or PAFCARDS -C, to setup a new
Permanent Configuration.

WARNING: This program has the potential to print hundreds of cards. You may wish to
capture the cards to disk and look at the output, before sending it to the
printer. PRN2FILE.COM, a free utility from PC-Magazine which intercepts
printer output, is included in the distribution packet. Documentation is
included on this program.
Notes
-----
This version of PAFCARDS will not print notes stored in text files. It assumes
the notes are in the NOTES2.DAT file.
PAFCARDS allows the use of user specified Tagged Notes. ie:"AFN :". There
are Nine Lines available for Printing of Tagged Notes. The default Tagged
Notes are the ones I use in my note files. To change them use the PAFCARDS -C
option. To leave a blank note line on all cards use a Tagged Note like
"NULL:" that will never be in your note files.
Example:
-------
AFN : 12NC15
BORN: Born in Salt Lake City, Family History Library Film # 123,222
MARR: Married in Los Angeles, Family History Library Film # 1,652,659
DIED: Living
BAP :
END :

SL P: BIC
Printer
-------
This version of PAFCARDS has only been tested with EPSON LQ Printers. If you
find that this program works with others, or Doesn't work with others, please
let me know.
The Cards are designed for (Small - 17 characters per inch, or Tiny - 20
characters per inch, with .75 line spacing).
If your printer is not compatible with these settings, use PRN2FILE to capture
the output to disk. Then set up your word processor program with the correct
settings, import the report file, and print it.
What's it doing?
----------------
After you've selected the options to be used for the Cards, the program reads
the data and prints the Cards. A message is displayed on the screen showing
who is being printed.
5
NOTE: Every attempt is made to prevent the same individual from being printed
multiple times on Range Families and Pedigree Prints. The program does
not check to see if individuals have been printed from Menu option to
Menu option. This is only done from the pressing of <F1>, until the
next pressing of <F1>.
After Printing the selected Cards a message will appear notifying you of completion.
Marriages
---------
PAF assumes that a liaison that produces children is a marriage. Since PAF
provides no way to indicate otherwise, that assumption is also used in this
program.
Problem Resolution
------------------
If you have any problems running the program, the most likely reason is that
there isn't enough memory available. An error message that says "Could not
Create <something or other>, means that there wasn't enough memory. Try making
more memory available by removing any TSR programs that you have loaded into
memory.
If you need help, please contact me. The following items will help in
resolving any problems:
A description of your hardware: class of machine (8088, 80286, 80386, etc),
amount of memory, printer model, etc.
A screen print showing any error messages.
A screen print showing the configuration.
A copy of your PAF data files.
If you find something wrong with the printed Cards, please send me the
following information:
A description of the problem.
A copy of the Card showing the problem.
A copy of your PAF data files.

Printing the report with a word processor
-----------------------------------------
The report may be captured to disk using PRN2FILE or a similar utility. If you wish
to print the report using a word processor, you must set the word processor as
follows, in order to properly print the report as formatted:
17 / 20 characters per inch
.75 lines per inch
0" left and right margins
0" top and bottom margins
The report is designed for a monospaced font such as Roman. Use of a proportional
spaced font will produce unexpected results.
Using PRN2FILE
--------------
PRN2FILE intercepts data sent to the printer and writes it to the designated disk
file. To send the report to a file named BOOK, enter the following command at the
DOS prompt before invoking PAFCARDS:
PRN2FILE (optional path)FILENAME
After PAFCARDS has ended, enter the following command to flush the last bit of the
report to the file and terminate printer interception:
PRN2FILE

7
The Shareware Concept
---------------------
PAFCARDS is distributed as shareware. Shareware is commercial software distributed
in an unconventional manner. Microcomputers copy information very easily. Instead
of trying to frustrate this through copy protection, shareware takes advantage of it
to reach as many users as possible at the lowest cost. Anyone may copy a shareware
program and distribute it to whomever they desire, provided they do not charge a fee
or alter it.
Shareware isn't free. Serious shareware is as polished as any conventional
commercial product, and represents just as much programming effort. If you use it
regularly, the authors expect compensation.
However, unlike conventional distribution, shareware allows you to evaluate the
product before you decide to purchase it. The price is often lower, as well,
because there are no advertising, packaging, or distribution costs.
But it can only work with your support. If you are still using a shareware product
after a couple of weeks, then it is obviously worth something to you, and you should
register it.
