  4. Introduction:

  7. CHRTDEMO is a free demonstration version of Charter Software's stock
  8. analysis program CHARTER Version 1.5.  The CHRTDEMO program may be
  9. copied for unlimited distribution.
  10.  
  11.  
  12. System Requirements:
  13. --------------------

  15. CHRTDEMO, as well as CHARTER Version 1.5, REQUIRES the following:
  16.  
  17.    - IBM PC or compatible.
  18.    - DOS Version 3.3 or above.
  19.    - 640K memory.
  20.    - EGA or VGA Graphics driver.
  21.    - Microsoft-compatible Mouse Driver.
  22.  
  23. We also recommend you install CHRTDEMO on a hard disk.  You only need
  24. about 1 megabyte disk space -- this includes nominal space for stock data.
  25.  
  26. Although a hard disk is NOT required to run CHRTDEMO (or CHARTER
  27. Version 1.5), it is highly recommended because file transfers (for
  28. running the ONLINE HELP feature and automated TOUR GUIDE) with hard
  29. disks are more efficient (i.e. faster!) than floppy disk drives.

  32. Installation of Demo Package:
  33. -----------------------------

  35. Installing the CHARTER Version 1.5 demonstration file CHRTDEMO.ZIP is
  36. simple.  You will need the public-domain software PKUNZIP (Version 1.1
  37. or higher) to un-zip CHRTDEMO.ZIP.
  38.  
  39. We recommend you make a separate directory on your hard disk where
  40. the CHRTDEMO.ZIP file can be un-zipped.  Copy the file CHRTDEMO.ZIP
  41. to the desired destination, and issue the command "PKUNZIP CHRTDEMO".

  43. The complete demonstration package (CHRTDEMO.ZIP) consists of the
  44. following files:

  47.   CHARTER.HLP .... Online Help (CHARTER documentation), REQ'D TO VIEW HELP!

  55.   COMS.DAY         file CHARTER.STK (listed above).  CHRTDEMO file access is
  56.   PIR.DAY          limited to CHARTER.STK and not these individual files.
  57.   QCOM.DAY         Purchasing CHARTER Version 1.5 (ordering information
  58.                    below) WILL be able to read files of this type.

  74. Running CHRTDEMO:
  75. -----------------

  77. Running (i.e. "booting") CHRTDEMO from DOS is simple.  First be sure that
  78. all files listed in the preceding section are all in the same directory.

  80. At the DOS prompt, simply enter the command "CHRTDEMO".

  83. Scope of CHRTDEMO Functionality:
  84. --------------------------------

  86. The CHRTDEMO program is identical to CHARTER Version 1.5, differing
  87. only in one feature:  Personalized stock data can NOT be loaded into
  88. CHRTDEMO.  For demonstration purposes, CHRTDEMO accesses a special
  89. file called CHARTER.STK.

  91. CHRTDEMO absolutely requires file CHARTER.STK to view sample stock data!

  94. Special Demo File CHARTER.STK:

  97. The contents of CHARTER.STK are stock data for 5 publicly traded stocks:

  107. The above data in CHARTER.STK is in "read-only" format.  Data can neither
  108. be edited nor appended to CHARTER.STK.

  110. In contrast, CHARTER Version 1.5 (ordering information explained below)
  111. reads text files that YOU create.  These text files are edited and
  112. updated with any text-editer.  The ONLINE HELP GUIDE, accessed from
  113. within CHRTDEMO, will explain in detail how data files are created.
  114.  
  115. For the purpose of thoroughly understanding what CHARTER Version 1.5
  116. data files look like, the data comprising CHARTER.STK are included as
  117. individual files in this demonstration package.  Using any text editor,
  118. you can view these files and observe how stock data, comments, and
  119. buy/sell transactions are typically stored.  However, KEEP IN MIND that
  120. these data files are included for illustrative purposes ONLY -- CHRTDEMO
  121. will NEVER access these files.

  124. Tour Guide:
  125. -----------

  127. CHRTDEMO has a unique TOUR GUIDE function that automatically starts if
  128. the required tour guide file is present in the directory from which
  129. CHRTDEMO was booted.
  130.  
  131. Files VGA.TOUR and EGA.TOUR are required to automate the TOUR GUIDE
  132. for VGA and EGA graphics-equipped computers, respectively.
  133.  
  134. The TOUR GUIDE function takes only 5 minutes (give or take a few) to run.
  135. It can only be executed when CHRTDEMO is first booted from the DOS prompt.
  136. If the applicable tour guide file (TOUR.EGA, TOUR.VGA) is present, CHRTDEMO
  137. will pop-up a window to ask if the TOUR GUIDE should be executed.  We strongly
  138. recommend you answer "YES" to this prompt.

  140. If the applicable tour guide file (TOUR.EGA, TOUR.VGA) is NOT present,
  141. CHRTDEMO will bypass the TOUR GUIDE option.

  144. Ordering Information

  147. When you order CHARTER Version 1.5, you essentially get the exact same
  148. program as CHRTDEMO, but with one exception:  CHARTER will be able
  149. to access specific data files of your choosing.  CHARTER.STK (used only
  150. by CHRTDEMO) is no longer utilized.

  152. Additional data files are NOT included when you purchase CHARTER Version 1.5.
  153. The creation of CHARTER data files (similar to the files included in this
  154. demo package: AND.DAY, BA.WK, COMS.DAY, PIR.DAY, QCOM.DAY) is YOUR
  155. responsibility.
