1 - INTRODUCTION
Do you know where your disk space has gone?
No matter how large a disk drive you have there comes a day when
you need to do some house cleaning to make space for new files.
DISK HOG FINDER was designed to compute the space used by
each directory and all it's subdirectories. A Graphical User
Interface clearly displays the results of this computation as a
directory outline with a disk usage bar chart. This allows you
easily see where disk space is being used.
Once a directory is identified you may look at that directory's
files sorted by Name, Date, Extension or Size. You may delete the
entire directory and all its subdirectories with a single command
or you may delete individual files.
2 - SELECTING THE DRIVE TO ANALYZE
When the DISK HOG FINDER starts you will be asked for a Drive
letter. The drive letter refers to the hard drive partition that
you would like to analyze. For hard drive users this would be C or
D. If you purchased the LAN version then you may use higher
letters like F, I, H etc. You may analyze floppy disks in drive A
or B but be sure there is a disk in the drive.
Simply type the letter you want and then press the ENTER key or
click the OK button with the mouse.
3 - THE DIRECTORY WINDOW
The Directory Window is the heart of the utility. It contains an
alphabetized outline of all the directories on that drive. Each
directory entry is shown with it's exact size listed as well as a
bar on a bar chart.
The scale of the bar chart is shown along the top. The default
scale is 10 Megabytes. If a directory uses 5 Megabytes of space it
would be shown as a blue bar that goes half-way across the chart.
All directories that use more than 10 Megabytes would be drawn as a
red bar all the way across the chart.
Only 16 directories can be seen on the screen a one time. A red
cursor will show the selected directory at any given time.
To see the rest you must use the PageUp/PageDown keys to move the
cursor a page at a time or the UpArrow/DownArrow keys to move one
row at a time. Clicking the mouse in the +/- boxes along the right
of the display will also move the cursor.
Simply hitting the ENTER key will select the highlighted directory.
The directory may also be selected with the mouse. Once a directory
has been selected a list box will appear with the following
options:
a. View Directory's Files - This will bring up the File
Window.
b. Delete Directory - Deletes the contents of this directory
and all its subdirectories. (Be careful this will delete
hidden and system files as well).
c. Change Chart Scale - This will allow you to select a new
chart scale for the Drive Directory Window.
d. Select New Drive Letter - Entering a new Drive letter
here will replace the current chart with a chart for the
new drive. The system will create a new chart if you
remove a directory but it will not create a new chart if
you delete a single file. You may re-enter the same drive
letter you started with to get an up to date picture of
that drive.
e. Exit to Highlighted Directory - Selecting this option
will end the program and place you in the highlighted
directory.
f. Exit to Current Directory - Selecting this option will
end the program and return you to the directory you
started the program from.
4 - THE FILE WINDOW
The File Window contains a listing of all the files in the selected
directory. It contains only the files in those directories and does
not refer to any subdirectories. Use the same PageUp/PageDown
ArrowUp/ArrowDown keys to scroll the files. When you hit enter of
select a file with the mouse a list box with the following choices
will appear:
a. Close File Window - Selecting this option will close the
File Window and return you to the Directory Window.
b. Delete File - Deletes the highlighted file.
c. Change Chart Scale - This will allow you to select a new
chart scale for the Drive Directory Window.
d. Sort Files in Window - Will cause a list box to appear
with the following options:
1. Name - Sorts files by Name.
2. Extension - Sort files by extension.
3. Date - Sort files by Date, new files are top of
list.
4. Size - Sort files by size, large files are top of
list.
5 - Technical Details
The system is setup for EGA graphics. This makes the system a
little faster and more widely useable. If your windows look small
or distorted on a VGA card then you may want to request a VGA
version.
The system makes some temporary files in the directory that you
start the program from, not the directory that the software
resides. This is so you can install it on a LAN for multiple users.
The systems attempts to compute the disk space used by each file.
It considers the fact that the smallest amount of disk space
granted to a file is a cluster. The cluster size is determined by
the hard drive you are using. This number should not be confused
with the SIZE of a file reported by DOS. The SIZE is computed
without regards to the cluster size.
