II. About Q-Reply
Q-Reply came about when I started to work on a way to make the way
we quoted replies a bit more stylish. About 3/4 of the way thru
"Quoteit v1.0" by Hiep Ma started popping up. Obviously I wasn't
the only one working on such a concept. If you haven't seen
"QuoteIt", it is very similar to what I have done with Q-Reply.
Never the less, I have continued to develope Q-Reply. It is still
in it's developement stage, however, I am releasing this beta
version so that those who would chose to utilize this quoting
utility can do so and make any suggestions and report any bugs.
Currently, Q-Replyv2.2 supports the .QWK packet format. Blue
Wave's mail packets were included in v1.1. Since then, Jabber,
KingQWK and MEGAREAD have been included in the supported Mail
Readers. I am constantly upgrading this utility to include
support for the various mail readers and at the same time trying
to write the program so that it can be used with the many mail
readers out there with very little or no modifications to the
existing code. More features are also being implemented as they
go from ideas to reality. If, you the user find this utility
useful to you, I wouldn't mind hearing about it. Alot of my time
has gone into the development of the program. If you are like me
you'll want to supoort a product that has been useful to you or
that you have come to like. My wife thinks I married my
computer instead of her, however she has been very supportive
of my efforts and your support would help.
That's about all there is to Q-Reply. Nothing that needs a
whole page devoted to it. It is pretty straight forward.
Page breaks have been included so that you can print out this
document so that it is readable after printing.
Q-Reply v2.2 Page 3
III. Configuring and Using Q-Reply
All mail readers will have a QR.BAT file as the Editor Name to use.
Inside the batch file you will be able to add your favorite text
editor. A sample QR.BAT for each supported mail reader is included
with the .BAT being replaced for the mail reader.
DOS 5 is assumed, so EDIT.COM is used as the Editor Name.
Just rename the QR.??? to QR.BAT, edit your favorite text editor
and you'll be ready to roll.
In version 2.2, the configuration file's format for Q-Reply has
changed. Inside the configuration file are Identifiers, they
identifying the area where you will place your information. These
Identifiers are enclosed with brackets, i.e.:
[Mail Reader Name] <--- Identifier
Off-Line Express v2.1 <--- Your information
[Mail reader]
C:\MODEM\OLX.EXE
These Identifiers MUST not be altered, Q-Reply looks for these
when it reads the configuration file.
Q-Reply has a new wrap around menuing system designed to make it
easier to select the the Quoting style you want to use. You also
have a sample menu that displays the various different quoting
styles and how they will look.
Selecting the defaults will default to "Sgl Vert/Dbl Horiz" for
the border and "Shadow style #4 - █▀" for the shadow that is
displayed around the border.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Inside the QREPLY.??? sample configuration file,
.??? standing for your particular .CFG file, are notes or comments
telling what to do. These notes or comments start with the
semi-colon (;). Remove the lines starting with the semi-colon's.
This has been known to have QREPLY read the wrong lines in your
QREPLY.CFG file.
Q-Reply v2.2 Page 4
1. Silly Little Mail Reader/Off-Line Express
Q-Reply needs just a few simple alterations to your mail
readers configuration file. Once these changes are made, you
will be ready to quote our first reply with Q-Reply.
First, go to the 'Editor' option in the configuration menu and
replace the editor's name with QR.BAT. You must include the
full pathname, for example: C:\MODEM\MAIL\QR.BAT.
For example, The preferred Editor screen should look like this:
Reply quoting style ALL
Quoting prefix string >
Message header in quoted reply Yes
Enable taglines Random
Fido-style taglines Yes
Second, go to the 'Replies' option in the configuration menu and
answer 'YES' to have the header included in the original message.
For example, The preferred Replies screen should look like this:
Editor command line C:\MODEM\MAIL\QR.BAT
Quoted original message file ORIGINAL.MSG
File to take reply text from REPLY.MSG
Clear screen before editor Yes
A sample batch file is supplied. Just modify it to fit your
needs.
The file for Silly Little Mail Reader is QR.MR
The file for Off-Line Express is QR.OLX

2. Blue Wave Mail Reader
There isn't much to configure for Blue Wave's mail reader.
First, go to Configuration Menu and select "Registration".
Change the "Quote Header String" to read:
Sample #1
On @D @F wrote to @T@N
Displays:
On 4/28/93 John Smith wrote to Sally Jones
Other samples are:
Sample #2
-=> On @D @F wrote to @T <=-@N
Displays:
-=> On 4/28/93 John Smith wrote to Sally Jones <=-
Sample #3
-=> On @D @F Wrote To @T <=-@N
Displays:
-=> On 4/28/93 John Smith Wrote To Sally Jones <=-
The key here are two things:
1) Keep the "On/on" as the first word.
2) Keep "Wrote To/wrote to" between the @F and @T.
These must be included for Q-Reply to be able to write out the
correct quoting line. It looks for the words "On/on" and
"Wrote To/wrote to".
Next go to "Directories" and replace the line:
Editor File Path to read: C:\BWAVE\QR.BAT
Next go to "Miscellaneous", then "Enter/Reply Options" and
toggle "Insert quote header in replies" to "Yes".
That's it. All other changes you make to the configuration
of your Blue Wave mail reader will not affect Q-Reply.
A sample batch file is included called QR.BW, just change
the .BW to .BAT and edit the editor path to your favorite
text editor.
Q-Reply v2.2 Page 6
3. MegaMail Reader
There is a little more to do with the MegaMail Reader. Select
the 'Utilities' option from the Main Menu, unless you are
installing MegaMail for the first time at which time you will
be placed in the 'Required' sub-menu, and select 'Directories'.
From there select 'External Editor Directory' and enter and
enter the MegaMail directory: ie C:\MEGAREAD <enter>.
If this is your first time installing both the MEGAMAIL reader
and Q-Reply, then enter directories howvever you want them, then
go to the 'Directories' sub-menu and edit the 'External Editor
Directory' like the example above.
NOTE: Your MESSAGE.TXT and REFER.TXT files MUST be written to
the MEGAMAIL reader's sub-directory, ie C:\MEGAREAD
Next, from the 'Configuration' sub-menu select the 'Entering
Messages' and from that sub-menu select 'Hdr in REFER.TXT' and
set it to 'Yes'.
Next, select 'External Editor' and enter the QR.BAT file as
follows: C:\MEGAREAD\QR.BAT MESSAGE.TXT REFER.TXT.
Be sure to include both .TXT files after the QR.BAT batch file
or your reply will not be quoted correctly. Change the drive
and directory to whatever you have the mail reader configured to.
Editing QR.BAT
There should be a sample QR.BAT file included in the QREPLY??.ZIP
file that you downloaded. If it isn't then your mail reader may
not be supported.
Two lines may need to be edited, unless, of course, you are using
what I supplied. QR.BAT should like like the following:
QR.BAT -> @ECHO OFF
C:\MEGAREAD\QREPLY.EXE %2
C:\MEGAREAD\<your editor here> %1
Well, that about does it for the MEGAMAIL Mail Reader.
Q-Reply v2.2 Page 7
4. KingQWK Mail Reader
KingQWK can be setup very quickly. Edit the sample QREPLY.CFG
that came with Q-Reply. Next make sure KingQWK puts the
header information in your quoted reply file. Q-Reply needs
this information. Next, select the External editor and replace
that with the QR.BAT file you edited earlier.
Select the 'Paths" from the configuration menu and entering in
the paths you want. These same paths must be in the QREPLY.CFG
also.
Next, select the "Utilities" option and change/add QR.BAT as the
Text Editor. This is the External text editor that you can use.
Q-Reply will be run from the QR.BAT batch file.
Next, select the "Default Flags" and look for:
1. "Quoted text in Reply/Separate file?" --> Answer 'R' so
the Reply File will be quoted.
2. "Add messsage header to quoted message?" --> Answer 'Y' to
have the message header included in the original.msg that
you are replying to.
That's it, just make sure that the QREPLY.CFG contains the same
information requested that the KingQWK is looking for.
Q-Reply v2.2 Page 8
5. Jabber Mail Reader
To configure Jabber to work with Q-Reply you'll need to change
the External editor to equal the QR.BAT file supplied, see
QR.JAB. Your line in JABBER.CFG should look like the following:
External editor (blank = internal editor)
{EDITOR=C:\JABBER\QR.BAT @QUOTE@ @REPLY@}
Change the line to include your header information in the
Quoted file to YES, like that below:
Insert header into quote (Yes/No)
{REPLYHEADER=Y}
Select the filename to Quote and the filename to reply to
whatever you like. I commonly use the following format:
Filename of quote file
{QUOTEFILE=ORIGINAL.MSG}
Filename of reply file
{REPLYFILE=REPLY.MSG}
That's all there is to it. Run Jabber and have fun.
Q-Reply v2.2 Page 9
IV. Using Q-Reply
After configuring Q-Reply, just reply to any message as you
normally would. Q-Reply will display it's opening screen, then
give you the Main Menu. This consist of three option.
This three options are:
[Q]uoting Menu - Selecting this will take you to the Border
Menu. From here you will have six options
to choose from. There are the original four
options that displays the four different box
styles. Two more options added in v2.2 were
'Computer Paper' and 'Windows'. The six
options are:
Double Vertical/Single Horizontal
Single Vertical/Double Horizontal
Double Vertical/Double Horizontal
Single Vertical/Single Horizontal
Computer Paper
Windows
After you have finished selecting the Border
you want, another menu will appear. This
menu is the Shadow Menu. From here you can
select the shadow you want to put around your
quoting message. You have five options to
choose from. They are:
Shadow style #1 - ░░
Shadow style #2 - ▒▒
Shadow style #3 - ▓▓
Shadow style #4 - █▀
No Shadows"
If you have chosen 'Windows' as your border,
then the shadow defaults to Shadow style #4.
After you have selected both your Border and
Shadow, your message will formatted and then
be loaded in with your favorite editor.
Q-Reply v2.2 Page 10
Use [D]efault - This option selects Q-Reply's default Border
and Shadow settings. These will be as follows:
Border setting:
Single Vertical/Double Horizontal
Shadow setting:
Shadow style #4
[S]ample Style - This will show you the different styles of how
your message will be displayed. The default
shadowing is used in the examples.
[E]xit - This will exit Q-Reply and load your editor.
This would be the same as editing your reply
with your favorite text editor or to cancel
the quoting of this message.
The new menuing system now allows you to use your cursor to make
your selection of the Border you wish to use and another menu to
allow you to select the Shadow to use.
One thing to note about your working directory. Q-Reply will
look in the current directory for it's configuration file. If
it doesn't find it it looks at the preceeding directory. If it
still doesn't find it, it'll tell you to place it in one of those
two directories. This normally isn't a problem if you have your
work directory off your mail readers directory. It will present
a problem if you don't. In these cases, like in DOS 6, where
they have the compressed H: drive or a RAM drive, you'll have to
place the configuration file one directory proceeding your work
directory for Q-Reply to find it.
