  4.         [white moreon]This area is a newsgroup conference, which is similar
  5. to an `EchoMail' area, but the conference originates in the Internet,
  6. not in Fidonet.  Messages in this area will be sent to other bulletin
  7. boards participating in this conference.  There may be a large number
  8. of systems hooked up to this particular area (and some possibly
  9. overseas!), so you should try to stay on-topic.  This should NOT be
  10. used for sending private messages to friends; private messages aren't
  11. permitted in newsgroup areas.  In addition, the conference moderator
  12. may get upset if you post off-topic material.

  14.         There are some special considerations for posting in
  15. newsgroup areas.  First, if the BBS does not offer you the option to
  16. post messages in this area, it may be that the newsgroup is moderated,
  17. and you'll have to send any replies to the conference moderator via
  18. netmail (contact the sysop for more information).  Second, if you are
  19. allowed to post here, and if you are replying to a message and quoting
  20. a portion of that message, put a line containing ONLY the characters
  21. [yellow]%R [white](just those two characters) on a line just above your first quoted
  22. line.  This will be expanded by the software to a line that reads:

  26. [white]...where the information in the angle brackets is taken from the
  27. message you are replying to.  This is considered good form in
  28. newsgroup conferences, and will save you a lot of manual typing, BUT
  29. it ONLY WORKS ON REPLIES, when you've chosen the [yellow]R[lightcyan])eply to message
  30. [white]option from the message menu.  It does NOT work if you enter the
  31. message any other way!  Also note that this expansion of the [yellow]%R
  32. [white]macro will not happen until some time after you log off, so don't
  33. panic when it doesn't change in front of your eyes.[goto next]
