  1. NETBENCH(TM) 2.10 README.TXT
  2.  
  3. This is the README.TXT file for NetBench 2.10.  It contains the
  4. NetBench license agreement, installation instructions, and important
  5. notes about NetBench.  Before you run NetBench, you must first read
  6. and agree to the license agreement.
  7.  
  8. LICENSE AGREEMENT FOR ZIFF-DAVIS' NETBENCH(TM) 2.1 
  9.  
  10. READ THIS AGREEMENT CAREFULLY BEFORE USING THE SOFTWARE EMBODIED 
  11. IN THE NETBENCH(TM) 2.1 DISKETTE (OR, IF DOWNLOADED, IN THE 
  12. DOWNLOADED FILE(S)).  Embodied in the NetBench 2.1 diskette 
  13. ("diskette") (or, if downloaded, in the downloaded file(s)) is 
  14. the NetBench 2.1 computer program and related documentation (the 
  15. "Software").  Ziff-Davis Publishing Company, L.P., having a place 
  16. of business at One Park Avenue, New York, New York 10016 ("Ziff") 
  17. is the licensor under this Agreement and you are the licensee.  
  18. By using the Software, in whole or in part, you agree to be bound 
  19. by the terms of this Agreement.  If you do not agree to the terms 
  20. of this Agreement, promptly return the Software (or, if 
  21. downloaded, delete the Software) to the Ziff-Davis Benchmark 
  22. Operation at One Copley Parkway, Suite 510, Morrisville, North 
  23. Carolina 27560.  Title to the Software and all copyrights, trade 
  24. secrets and other proprietary rights therein are owned by Ziff.  
  25. All rights therein, except those expressly granted to you in this 
  26. Agreement, are reserved by Ziff.  
  27.  
  28. 1.    Limited License
  29.  
  30. This Agreement grants you only limited rights to use the 
  31. Software. Ziff grants you a non-exclusive, non-transferable 
  32. license to use the Software on a file server networked with 
  33. multiple PC computers for the sole purpose of conducting 
  34. benchmark tests to measure the performance of computer hardware 
  35. and operating system configurations.  You have the right to make 
  36. a single copy of the Software for archival purposes and the right 
  37. to transfer a copy of the Software across a network only to the 
  38. PC computers attached to the network.  
  39.  
  40. You may not publish or distribute benchmark test results obtained 
  41. by you from your use of the Software without prior written 
  42. permission from Ziff-Davis.  For such permission, contact the 
  43. Ziff-Davis Benchmark Operation at the above address.  
  44.  
  45. This Agreement and your rights hereunder shall automatically 
  46. terminate if you fail to comply with any provision of this 
  47. Agreement.  Upon such termination, you agree to cease all use of 
  48. the Software, to delete the Software and to destroy all copies of 
  49. the diskette and other materials contained in this package in 
  50. your possession or under your control, or, if downloaded, to 
  51. destroy any and all copies of the Software in your possession or 
  52. under your control.
  53.  
  54. 2.    Additional Restrictions
  55.  
  56. A.    You shall not (and shall not permit other persons or 
  57. entities to) rent, lease, sell, sublicense, assign, or otherwise 
  58. transfer the Software or this Agreement.  Any attempt to do so 
  59. shall be void and of no effect.
  60.  
  61. B.   You shall not (and shall not permit other persons or 
  62. entities to) reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, merge, 
  63. modify, include in other software or translate the Software, or 
  64. use the Software for any commercial purposes, except for the 
  65. publication or distribution of test results with Ziff's prior 
  66. written permission, as provided above.
  67.  
  68. C.    You shall not (and shall not permit other persons or 
  69. entities to) remove or obscure Ziff's copyright, trademark or 
  70. other proprietary notices or legends from any of the materials 
  71. contained in this package or downloaded.

  73. 3.    Limited Warranty and Limited Liability
  74.  
  75. THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, 
  76. EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY 
  77. WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. 
  78. THE ENTIRE RISK AS TO THE RESULTS AND PERFORMANCE OF THE SOFTWARE 
  79. IS ASSUMED BY YOU, AND ZIFF ASSUMES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE 
  80. ACCURACY OR APPLICATION OF OR ERRORS OR OMISSIONS IN THE 
  81. SOFTWARE. IN NO EVENT SHALL ZIFF BE LIABLE FOR ANY DIRECT, 
  82. INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING 
  83. OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE SOFTWARE, EVEN IF ZIFF HAS 
  84. BEEN ADVISED OF THE LIKELIHOOD OF SUCH DAMAGES OCCURRING.  ZIFF 
  85. SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS, DAMAGES OR COSTS, ARISING OUT 
  86. OF, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, LOST PROFITS OR REVENUE, LOSS OF USE OF 
  87. THE SOFTWARE, LOSS OF DATA OR EQUIPMENT, THE COSTS OF RECOVERING 
  88. SOFTWARE, DATA OR EQUIPMENT, THE COST OF SUBSTITUTE SOFTWARE OR 
  89. DATA, CLAIMS BY THIRD PARTIES, OR OTHER SIMILAR COSTS.

  91. THE ONLY WARRANTY MADE BY ZIFF IS THAT THE ORIGINAL PHYSICAL 
  92. MEDIA IN WHICH THE SOFTWARE IS EMBODIED AND WHICH IS DISTRIBUTED 
  93. BY ZIFF SHALL BE FREE OF DEFECTS IN MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP.  
  94. ZIFF'S ENTIRE LIABILITY AND THE USER'S EXCLUSIVE REMEDY SHALL BE 
  95. LIMITED TO THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ORIGINAL PHYSICAL MEDIA IF 
  96. DEFECTIVE. THE WARRANTIES AND REMEDIES SET FORTH HEREIN ARE 
  97. EXCLUSIVE AND IN LIEU OF ALL OTHERS, ORAL OR WRITTEN, EXPRESS OR 
  98. IMPLIED.  NO ZIFF AGENT OR EMPLOYEE, OR THIRD PARTY, IS 
  99. AUTHORIZED TO MAKE ANY MODIFICATION OR ADDITION TO THIS WARRANTY.

  101. SOME STATES DO NOT ALLOW EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF IMPLIED 
  102. WARRANTIES OR LIMITATION OF LIABILITY FOR INCIDENTAL OR 
  103. CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES; SO THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS OR EXCLUSIONS MAY 
  104. NOT APPLY TO YOU.

  106. 4.    U.S. Government Restricted Rights.
  107.  
  108. The Software is licensed subject to RESTRICTED RIGHTS.  Use, 
  109. duplication or disclosure by the Government or any person or 
  110. entity acting on its behalf is subject to restrictions as set 
  111. forth in subdivision (c)(1)(ii) of the Rights in Technical Data 
  112. and Computer Software Clause at DFARS (48 CFR 252.227-7013) for 
  113. DoD contracts, in paragraphs (c)(1) and (2) of the Commercial 
  114. Computer Software-Restricted Rights clause in the FAR (48 CFR 
  115. 52.227-19) for civilian agencies, on in other comparable agency 
  116. clauses. The contractor/manufacturer is the Ziff-Davis Benchmark 
  117. Operation, One Copley Parkway, Suite 510, Morrisville, North 
  118. Carolina 27560.

  120. 5.    General Provisions
  121.  
  122. Nothing in this Agreement constitutes a waiver of Ziff's rights 
  123. under U.S copyright laws or any other Federal, state, local or 
  124. foreign law.  You are responsible for installation, management, 
  125. and operation of the Software.  This Agreement shall be 
  126. construed, interpreted and governed under New York law.  If any 
  127. provision of this Agreement shall be held by a court of competent 
  128. jurisdiction to be illegal, invalid or unenforceable, the 
  129. remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.

  132. NETBENCH INSTALLATION
  133.  
  134. This section talks about how you can install and start using 
  135. NetBench. It includes information on installing NetBench on a 
  136. PC and on a network server. Refer to the NetBench manual for 
  137. more complete information.
  138.  
  139. Installing on a PC
  140.  
  141. This section provides instructions for installing NetBench on 
  142. a PC in order become familiar with the tool.  Network testing 
  143. cannot be accomplished using the PC installation procedure.
  144.  
  145. Load the NetBench files in an empty directory on the PC.  To 
  146. do this:
  147.  
  148. 1.  Create the directory on the PC.  Any directory name will 
  149.     work.  The drive  must be local with respect to the PC.  
  150.     In this case we will assume the C: drive.
  151.  
  152.     md fakenet

  154.     In this example we will use FAKENET. 
  155.  
  156.     NOTE:  This directory must be empty and should only contain 
  157.     files which are pertinent to Ziff-Davis' NetBench.  Files 
  158.     located in the directory will be overwritten if they correspond 
  159.     to filenames reserved by NetBench.
  160.  
  161. 2.  Insert Ziff-Davis' NetBench disk into the floppy drive and 
  162.     copy all NetBench files to the newly created file directory.
  163.  
  164. 3.  Run the NetBench License Utility.
  165.  
  166.     NETBENCH / L
  167.  
  168.     You are required to provide your Name and Organization under 
  169.     the terms of the Licensing Agreement.  Follow the directions 
  170.     on the display.
  171.  
  172. 4.  Create a file named WS.ID with any text editor and type a 
  173.     unique 3 digit numeric identifier (example: 001) at the 
  174.     first position in the file (no lead spaces or line feeds), 
  175.     then save the file to the C:\WS.ID local drive root 
  176.     directory (Refer to: Definitions WS.ID and Test Stations in
  177.     the NetBench documentation).  The purpose of the file is 
  178.     to identify the test station with a unique 3 digit numeric
  179.     identifier.   NetBench requires this file be located on 
  180.     the C:\ drive root directory of each test station.   
  181.  
  182. 5.  Once NetBench is installed it is best to:
  183.     A)     Determine which NetBench test to run (NIC Throughput or 
  184.         I/O Throughput)
  185.  
  186.     B)     Read the corresponding section in this guide about 
  187.         the test.  
  188.  
  189.     C)     If you were actually using the network for testing, 
  190.         you would normally make specific adjustments to the 
  191.         test network at this point in time.  Because you have 
  192.         installed NetBench on your local drive, NetBench results 
  193.         are "simulated" and no network adjustments are required.
  194.  
  195.     D)     Go to the Running NetBench section to learn how to use 
  196.         the menus and configure NetBench parameters for the test. 
  197.         It would be useful to "play" with the test parameters 
  198.         in order to become familiar with them.
  199.  
  200.     E)     Configure the NetBench parameters
  201.  
  202.     F)     Run the test.

  205. Installing NetBench on a Network Server
  206.  
  207.                 WARNING
  208. The user is cautioned against running these tests on a "live" 
  209. production network.   NetBench is designed to exercise the 
  210. network in various ways.  Running NetBench should be done in 
  211. isolation when other user activity on the network is non-existent.
  212.  
  213. Load all the NetBench diskette files onto the server such that 
  214. the program can run off a common logical drive with the other 
  215. test stations on the network. To do this : 
  216.  
  217. 1.  Log into the server from your workstation over your LAN 
  218.     connection.
  219.  
  220. 2.  Create a default directory on the server.  This directory 
  221.     will be accessed by all the test stations as a common 
  222.     workspace from which they will read and write.  Any directory 
  223.     name will work.  In this example we will use NETBENCH.  
  224.     Warning: This directory must be empty and should only 
  225.     contain files which are pertinent to Ziff-Davis' NetBench.  
  226.     Other files may be overwritten if they are contained in 
  227.     this directory.

  229.     J: {substitute your Network drive name for J in all cases}
  230.     MD J:\NETBENCH
  231.     CD  J:\NETBENCH 
  232.  
  233. 3.  Install the NetBench programs.  Insert Ziff-Davis' NetBench 
  234.     disk into the floppy drive and copy the floppy files to 
  235.     the server directory you have designated.
  236.  
  237. 4.  Run the NetBench License Utility.
  238.

  242.     You are required to provide your Name and Organization 
  243.     under the terms of the Licensing Agreement.  Follow the 
  244.     directions on the display.

  246. 5.  At each Test station: Create a file named WS.ID with 
  247.     any text editor and type a unique 3 digit numeric 
  248.     identifier (example: 001) at the first position in the 
  249.     file (no lead spaces or line feeds), then save the file 
  250.     to the C:\WS.ID local drive root directory (Refer to: 
  251.     Definitions WS.ID and Test Stations in the NetBench

  254.     numeric identifier.  A sequential scheme is suggested 
  255.     for convenience (example: 001, 002, 003). NetBench 
  256.     requires this file be located on the C:\ drive root 
  257.     directory of each test station.

  259. 6.  Set the login sequence on each test station to execute 
  260.     NetBench on startup.  Modify AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS 
  261.     so that the test stations will boot and automatically start 
  262.     up NetBench for the current test run. Automatic boot up is 
  263.     not required, but suggested for convenience. It also 
  264.     prevents other software interfering with the performance 
  265.     tests.  
  266.  
  267. 7.  Prevent any non-test stations from interfering with the 
  268.     network.  Warning:  Do not run these tests from the same 
  269.     network that other users are accessing since it will 
  270.     interfere with both the NetBench testing and the user.  
  271.     Any non-test stations may remain physically connected to 
  272.     the network but must be logged off the network server.
  273.  
  274. 8.  Ensure that the file server and network LAN is properly 
  275.     configured for the test.  This includes:
  276.  
  277.     *  LAN server network interface card.
  278.     *  All connectivity and cabling.
  279.     *  Software drivers on LAN server and test stations.
  280.     *  Operating system parameters which might affect the 
  281.            test (Disk caching, memory,  maximum packet size, 
  282.            minimum packet size).
  283.  
  284. NetBench is now installed.
  285.  
  286.  
  287. IMPORTANT NETBENCH NOTES
  288.  
  289. The following list provides information you need to know BEFORE you
  290. run NetBench. Read these notes before running NetBench.
  291.  
  292. ====================================================================
  293.                              WARNING
  294.   The user is cautioned against running these tests on a "live"

  302. 1.  You must read and agree to the license information listed 
  303.     above  before you run NetBench for the first time. The same 
  304.     information appears on your PC's screen when you first run 
  305.     NetBench and in the front of the NetBench manual. If you do 
  306.     not agree to the licensing information, remove NetBench from 
  307.     your PC and return the diskette and all accompanying materials
  308.     (including any documentation) to ZDBOp at the address listed
  309.     in the license agreement (or, if you downloaded NetBench, delete 
  310.     NetBench from your PC).
  311.  
  312. 2.  Netbench requires at least 420kb of conventional memory on
  313.     each test station to operate successfully.
  314.  
  315. 3.  Prevent any non-test stations from interfering with the
  316.     network.  Warning: Do not run these tests from the same
  317.     network that other users are accessing since it will
  318.     interfere with both the NetBench testing and the user.  Any
  319.     non-test stations may remain physically connected to the
  320.     network but must be logged off the network server.

  322. 4.  Ensure that the file server and network LAN is properly

  331. 5.  The CPU Throughput test has been removed from NetBench 2.10.
  332.  
  333. 6.  NetBench 2.10 fixed a bug in the method the I/O Throughput
  334.     Sequential Read and Sequential Write tests wrapped
  335.     around to the beginning of the test file.  As a result,
  336.     Sequential Read and Write throughput numbers will be
  337.     slightly higher when compared against previous versions
  338.     of NetBench.

  340. 7.  The test files created by the NetBench 2.10 I/O Throughput
  341.     test are not typically  compressible.  As a result, network
  342.     operating system file compression support (for example,
  343.     Novell NetWare 4.0) should be disabled when running NetBench.
