  7. Welcome to this shareware version of RPM - The Resources and Projects
  8. Manager. RPM is the only projectS management system that focuses on
  9. managing all your projects and resources at once -- with no knowledge
  10. of CPM (Critical Path Method) or PERT (Program Evaluation and Review
  11. Technique) required.

  14. RPM - WHAT IS IT
  15. ================

  17. RPM is both a projectS and resourceS (emphasis on the "s") management
  18. system.
  19.  
  20. RPM is NOT a replacement for standard critical path project
  21. management applications. These applications are essential tools in
  22. the management of large, "high-risk" projects. The definition of
  23. "high risk" is somewhat relative, of course, but any project that
  24. might be described as "mission-critical" for your organization,
  25. with a great number of activities (tasks), should be planned in some
  26. detail, using a critical path product that can schedule activities,
  27. level resources and point out critical problems.

  29. However, many organizations have many projects on the go at once.
  30. Usually these projects can be described as relatively "low-risk"
  31. and, while they should still be planned, the level of effort
  32. required to build and maintain a critical path plan for each may be
  33. prohibitive. It is for this situation that RPM was designed.

  35. RPM allows you to model all your projects quickly using a familiar
  36. spreadsheet-like arrangement for each project. A project consists of
  37. resources across the top of the "sheet" and phases down the side.
  38. Estimates of efforts and dates can be made on a project, phase,
  39. resource or cell (the intersection of a resource and phase) level.

  41. The Gantt/Utilization screen lets you see up to six resources on
  42. screen simultaneously (VGA), so you can immediately assess the impact
  43. of any project or group of projects on any resources or group of
  44. resources at a glance.

  46. Projects can be updated in minutes with just a few percent-complete
  47. numbers. Progress information can be imported directly from many
  48. project accounting systems.

  50. RPM lets you assign individuals (e.g.: Jim Smith), groups of individuals
  51. (e.g.: project managers), disciplines (e.g.: architects), departments
  52. and other resource or organizational structures to a project. RPM can
  53. be setup, for example, so that if Jim Smith was also designated as an
  54. architect, his utilization on any given project would be removed from
  55. the availability of architects for other projects.

  57. In addition, RPM produces presentation quality reports, including
  58. resource utilization curves and Gantt (bar) charts. Reports can be
  59. written to file as Lotus files to produce spreadsheet based graphs, if
  60. desired. Also, the ASCII import facility means that RPM can be updated
  61. automatically from many financial/project accounting/staff time sheet
  62. systems.

  64. For projects that have not begun, a percent likelihood of actually doing
  65. the work can be assigned to the project. Thus, expected values of future
  66. work can be estimated in both hours and dollars.

  70. Hardware Requirements : IBM PC, PC-compatible or MS-DOS computer. 512k
  71. RAM (640k recommended); 1 floppy drive; MDA, CGA, EGA or VGA monitor
  72. (some super VGA boards are also supported). PCL level 4 printers
  73. supported (e.g. HP Laserjet).
