* * * * * * * * * SUBJECT Version 2.50 * * * * * * * * * *
Sept 1993
This is a handy program for organizing thoughts, recipes, notes,
research information, sports, or whatever....with a word processor.
This program is easy to use and was designed to run quickly and
efficiently. The unregistered version will allow you to use up
to 20 different subjects and the registered version 999 subjects.
Subjects can be moved, copied, edited, viewed, or exported to a file
or printer. SUBJECT may be used on either a floppy or a hard drive
system.
Here is what a satisfied user had to say about SUBJECT:
"I am a writer and have just completed writing my first book.
Subject has been a necessary tool for my writing needs. With
it, I was able to; organize my topics accordingly, give each a
descriptive explanation, and save space on my hard-drive.
"Subject is the necessary writing tool that YOU need; whether
you are writing a best seller, organizing your notes for
school, or listing some recipes. I would not have been able to
write and organize my book as I had without the use and the
convenience of Subject." Ron Sinko (July 1992)
WHAT CAN YOU USE SUBJECT FOR ???????????
SCHOOL NOTES!
- Lets say you are a student and you want to organize notes. You
could have English at subjects 100-150. In there you would put class
notes or book reviews or any papers you are writing. Science could
go into subject 200-250. Since each subject can have a description
you could have a different topic for each subject. Subject can be a
very handy way to organize your notes.
BBS DISCUSSIONS
- BBS users....Lets say you talk to people on bbs's and like to get into
discussions about certain topics. Someone asks you a question that
requires some research. After you research and get the answer Subject
is a handy way to save your answer for future reference. After all,
why do the research all over again? Just organize your subjects by
topics and you can easily pull up any answers or research.
RECIPES, COOKING TIPS ETC
- Recipes. Subject is great for recipes. Lets say you want Subject to
store all your favorite recipes. You could use subjects 300-399 for
your recipes. Just store chicken recipes in 300. Beef delights can go in
subject 301. Deserts in subject 315....etc
PERSONAL INFORMATION
- Use subject to store personal info. RRSP's, Bank info, Home Finance info,
Car maintenance lists, recording of bill payments, whatever you can
think of. Use subjects above 980 to store your personal data and the
lower subject info to store other data such as notes, letters etc.
- IN FACT YOU could do all of the above with the registered version of
Subject since you will have at your disposal 999 subjects! If that is not
enough you may declare up to a total of 5 subdirectories to hold
subject data info. Each of the 5 directories can handle 999
subjects. That should be enough for even the hard-core subject
users!
Files the program uses or creates:
- SUBJV25.EXE main program (type subjv25 to start)
- SUBJECT.CFG configuration file (Editor, File
viewer, Extract, and Archive)
These programs need to be in the
path or same subdirectory for use by
SUBJECT. Inclosed in this
release are 2 freeware programs. (1) A
file editor TED2 (2) A file viewer BF.
SAMPLE SUBJECT.CFG FILE: Showing the 6 configuration lines....
TED2 1) Command to start up the editor
BF 2) Command to start up the file viewer
PKUNZIP -E 3) Command to extract from the archive file
PKZIP -A 4) Command to insert into the archive file
First-name Last-name 5) Your First and Last name
0 6) Your registered Keycode number
e:\subject\dir1\
e:\subject\dir2\
e:\subject\dir3\
e:\subject\dir4\
e:\subject\dir5\
** (for line 3 & 4 put your archive program in the same directory
or path. You can use ZIP, ARC, LZH or whatever archive
program you wish.
The following is a description of all the lines in the
subject.cfg file:
--------------------------------------------------
Line 1: Command to start up the editor OR word processor
If you have trouble starting with it then work to get it
running in DOS in this subdirectory...then it will work
in this configuration file.
Line 2: Command to start up the file viewer
Line 3: Command to extract from the archive file: make sure the
extract program is in the subject subdirectory on in
your path.
Line 4: Command to insert into the archive file: make sure the
archiving program is in the subject subdirectory on in
your path.
Line 5: Your First and Last name
Line 6: Your registered Keycode number
** the lines 7 - 11 are there to tell subject where to find the
SUBDATA.ZIP and SUBJECT.KEY files. If you are only going to
use one directory...then all 5 lines should be the same. As
you add additional directories...then make the changes to your
subject.cfg file. If there is an error in one of these lines
subject will abort telling you it can't find file SUBJECT.KEY.
The solution is to put in the correct path and make sure a copy
of SUBJECT.KEY is in the new subdirectory. You then run the
SET command to init the subject descriptions.
Line 7: location of subject data directory number 1
Line 8: location of subject data directory number 2
Line 9: location of subject data directory number 3
Line 10: location of subject data directory number 4
Line 11: location of subject data directory number 5
--------------------------------------------------
- SUBDATA.ZIP holds the archived subject file data
- KILL.FIL used to delete a archived subject file
- SUBJECT.KEY this is the index file for all the
subjects.
- TED-MD.ZIP Freeware ascii word processor
- BF.ZIP Freeware file browser
********************************************************************
* Since this program SHELLS out to the system it will require *
* COMMAND.COM. For a hard disk this is no problem, but if you *
* are running SUBJECT on a floppy-only system COMMAND.COM *
* IS A REQUIRED FILE. The program will not work without it! *
********************************************************************
The goal of this program and release was to make SUBJECT as easy
and user-friendly as possible. Right after you unarchive the
files it is ready to run. All you need is your archiving
program setup in the subject.cfg file and define your subject
data paths....and...you are ready to go. I would recommend
just using subject in 1 data directory until you are familiar
with the program. After than you may add 4 additional
directories with each one holding up to 999 subjects. Just
make the subdirectory, copy the subject.key file into the new
subdirectory, edit your subject.cfg file to point to the new
subdirectory, and from inside subject: 1) use the dir command
to change to the new data directory 2) use the SET command
to initialize the file descriptions.
DISCLAIMER: By using Subject you are accepting any risks or potential
damages involved.
