Black Book Plus v3
RanKel Software
Copyright (c) 1992, 1993 Randy M. Freed
Requirements
Black Book Plus will run on any IBM compatible computer with
512k of memory and one floppy disk but 640k and a hard drive is
recommended. This program will work with Hercules, CGA, EGA,
VGA, or SVGA monitors. A dot matrix printer is needed to print
envelopes and labels.
About the Printer
A Panasonic KX-P1124 printer running is Epson mode was used
for testing. Any Epson compatible dot matrix printer should
work. Other printers including laser printers may work, however
they were not available for testing.
About Black Book Plus
Black Book Plus (BBP)is an electronic "black book" address
data base. It can be run as a TSR (pop up) program using
approximately 7k of ram. This will allow you to "pop up" Black
Book Plus while running other DOS programs. It can also be run
as a stand-alone program in DOS. BBP can also be run as a DOS
program under Windows. With BBP you can keep track of names,
addresses, phone numbers and notes for all your friends, family,
business associates, or organizations all in one program. There
is no need to load a file for your personal friends and another
for your business colleges. BBP allows you to attach keywords or
codes to each "card" entered, so you can organize the entries as
needed. Black Book Plus also will print envelopes, labels, phone
books, index, postcards, and rotary cards. You can use BBP to
track your Christmas card list, or even business contacts.
Black Book Plus is a very easy program to use. Pressing any
letter will "zoom" you to the first occurrence of a last name
starting with that letter. You can browse through the cards
using either the arrow keys, or the mouse. Flip to the back side
of the card and you can enter notes for each card. You can also
search for a card by selecting "Search" from the pull down menu.
When using the search mode, you can search for cards by name,
company, city, state, zip code, keywords, code, phone number,
address, cards tagged for printing, or a combination of keywords
and codes. You don't need to know the correct spelling to do a
search. For instance, entering J D during a name search will
find all cards with names starting with J D. Like John Doe, Jack
Doe, and Jane Dainty. The Codes and Keywords allow you to
organize your cards into almost any order you need. They also
allow quick recall of special groups. For instance using DOCTOR
as a keyword would allow you to recall a list of all of your
doctors with just a few keystrokes.
Running Black Book Plus
To run this software you will need an IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2
or compatible computer with a minimum of 512K of memory and one
floppy disk. However a hard disk and at least 640K of memory is
recommended. To start Black Book Plus move to the directory and
drive that contains your new BBP files and type "install c:"
(Replace C: with the drive you wish to install BBP). If you
prefer to install BBP manually, first create a directory for the
program and data files. Then copy all the files to the new
directory. The files should be BBPV3.EXE, BBPV3.DOC, BBPV3.PIF,
BBPV3.ICO, VENDOR.DOC, REGISTER.DOC, and INSTALL.BAT. To start
the program and run as a stand alone DOS program, move to the
directory containing the files and type "bbpv3". To load BBP as
a TSR (pop up) program, type "bbpv3 /l". This will load a 7k
resident kernel into memory and use Expanded memory as a swap
file. When the hot key (Alt+Tab) is pressed, the program will
"pop up" over DOS or any DOS program (See "Using Black Book Plus
as a TSR "Pop up" program" and "Command Line Options" in
BBPV3.DOC for more information). Unregistered versions will
display the shareware information until a key is pressed. After
pressing a key the main program will start. After the program
has been run for the first time it will create several new files.
Card.dat is the data file needed to store all the card
information and Notepad.dat is the data file for the Note Pad.
The files with the .ndx extension are used for searches.
Black Book Plus also allows you to Import and Export data.
The Export procedure can be useful if you wish to do a mail
merge. The comma delimited ascii file can be used by many word
processors including WordStar and Word Perfect. The Import
procedure lets you use information you may already have stored in
some other database file. These items are discussed in detail in
the BBPV3.DOC file.
Files
The files that should be included on disk are:
1. BBPV3.EXE the main program file
2. BBPV3.DOC the instruction file
3. BBPV3.PIF a pif file to run Black Book Plus under Windows 3.1
4. BBPV3.ICO an icon for Windows 3.1
5. REGISTER.DOC use this to register Black Book Plus
6. VENDOR.DOC (this file) for Vendor information.
7. INSTALL.BAT the installation file
