README.2ND
This file contains some hints and helps which supplement the information in
GC.DOC, which you should read first.
RAMDRIVE
If you have a ramdrive installed, copying all the program files to it before
you start will speedup the map draws considerably.
COPY GC.* (your ramdrive)
It is not necessary to keep the storm files on the ramdrive, but be sure the
storm files PATH is set to their location.
SOURCES OF STORM DATA
Your local radio or television news will give current hurricane coordinates,
but the best source I've found is CompuServe. They carry the most recent
hurricane advisories. You can access them by G WEA (GO WEATHER) followed by
SW HUR (SEVERE WEATHER, HURRICANES).
If you have cable TV, current coordinates and the best satellite
representations can be seen on the Weather Channel. During hurricane
season, they give a Tropical Update at 47 minutes (or so) after every hour.
BATCH FILE USAGE
Since GO 'CANES can accept command line parameters, it is perfect for use in
a batch file. You can write a tiny batch file consisting of GC followed by
the storm name and desired map. This batch file can then be run from your
menu or whatever, and the storm will be displayed on the screen with no
further intervention. Recall that you can also use a list on the command
line.
When tracking active storms, I use a batch file that does the following:
1) Log onto CompuServe and capture the hurricane advisory to a file.
2) Load the advisory and the current storm file into an editor with
split-screen capability so I can add the new coordinates to the storm file
while viewing both.
3) Call GC with the storm name and map.
4) if there is more than one storm active, repeat parts 2 and 3
I use the SemWare Editor, successor to the shareware editor Qedit. Both are
great, but any editor with split screens will do.
If you have the indispensable keyboard utility STACKEY, the above process
can be automated.
LISTS
Lists can be used in a number of creative ways. I maintain the following two
lists:
1993A.LST (all Atlantic storms, year to date.)
1993P.LST (all Pacific storms, year to date.)
Now, for ALL storms, year to date, I can make a batch file (1993.BAT)
consisting of:
GC 1993A.LST 1 (map 1 = Atlantic)
GC 1993P.LST 5 (map 5 = Pacific)
When I run the batch file, Go 'Canes will first plot the Atlantic storms,
then I exit the program, it reloads the Pacific map and plots all the
Pacific storms.
When there is more than one active storm in the Atlantic, I also include
them all in a list called ACTIVE.LST.
Happy hurricane tracking! Questions, comments, and especially registrations
