With this edition, we release the 500th official release of a (Z)
product. Those include the following:
Z*Magazine
ST-Report
ST*ZMagazine
Z*Net
Z*Net PC (Issues 1 thru 35)
This also marks the start of our eighth year. The very first release
before Z*Mag began in 1984 as "Hudson BBS Atari News", then the
Syndicate BBS News and finally Z*Mag New Jersey in May 1986.
You might have noticed ST-Report on the list. Well, before Ralph
Mariano took over, it was published by myself. We need not get into
that again as it is a very long story. The name ST-Report orginated
from a Z*Magazine column called Z*Mag ST. The first edition was
actually called Z*Magazine ST-Report and was released as a monthly in
June 1987.
Well, that was a long time ago. Much of the community has changed over
the years along with the machines since the 800XL. I didn't think it
was going to last as long as it has, especially since the death of my
close friend Stan Lowell last year, which has caused a large void in my
life and in the publishing of this online magazine.
While reflecting on the past, you must look into the future. I can
honestly say that I am very close to ending this ritual. However, I
know that we are going to be here until the end of the year, and will
decide between now and then the future of Z*Net.
There are still many months ahead to decide and until then we will
continue to provide our readers with as much information as possible.

NINTENDO SIGNS AGREEMENT
Nintendo announced exclusive licensing agreements last week with Major
League Baseball and Seattle Mariners All-Star center fielder Ken
Griffey, Jr. to produce the most realistic baseball video game ever
created. The game, "Ken Griffey, Jr. Presents: Major League Baseball"
will be available only on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The
game is currently in development, and will be introduced to the public
on baseball's Opening Day next April. The suggested retail price is yet
to be determined.
SPRINT CHOOSES MICROSOFT
Microsoft has announced a long-term, multimillion dollar agreement with
Sprint that establishes Microsoft as the key supplier of desktop
computer operating systems, applications and technical support for all
Sprint divisions.
NEW EPSON PRINTERS
Epson has introduced new versions of its 24-pin dot matrix printers, the
LQ-570+ and AP-5000+. These enhanced models operate up to 7 percent
faster than their predecessors and feature whisper quiet operation.
Each printer features 14 fonts, 10 bit-mapped and four scalable, an
addition of two scalable fonts over the previous model. At launch,
Epson is offering a free Ultra Letter Quality Film Ribbon by enclosing a
coupon with every printer. Both the LQ-570+ and AP-5000+ have a
manufacturer's suggested retail price of $349 and are available
immediately through authorized dealers and retailers nationwide. The

GATES WINS AWARD
William Gates III, chairman and co-founder of Microsoft is the 1993
recipient of the Price Waterhouse Information Technology Leadership
Award for Lifetime Achievement. Gates is being honored for expanding
the frontiers of software technology for the betterment of mankind. The
prestigious award will be presented to Gates at the 5th Annual
Computerworld Smithsonian Awards Dinner at the National Building Museum
in Washington, D.C. on June 7, 1993.
MOTOROLA'S NEXT-GENERATION 8-BIT
Motorola unveiled the 68HC08 (HC08) 8-bit microcontroller architecture,
a high-performance, cost-effective evolution of its popular 68HC05
(HC05) family. Fully upward object-code compatible with the HC05, the
HC08 provides migration for current HC05 users looking to cost-

In the month or so that has past since my last column, there has been a
lot of activity in the Atari forums. This is particularly encouraging
right now. I was forced into situations recently where I had to use
Macs to accomplish my work because that what was available at the
recording studio. What followed was a roller coaster of emotions,
opinions and desires.
At first, there was envy. There are so many products and programs
available for the Mac that a loyal Atari user could easily become angry
at the apparent lack of those things in "our" platform. And the Mac is
"slick." It's chic, cool, hip, hot and, in other words, popular.
Then we started to talk about money. For what I paid for my computers
(a 4 meg ST and a Stacy), I figured out that I saved enough to buy more
than a few additional musical instruments. This brought me back to the
reality of my investment, and the slogan which ultimately sold me on the
ST line: Power with out the Price!
Must that also mean: Sale without the Support!? In the current world of
Atari users, there is the justifiable question of whether their
investment was the "right" choice. After all, we're seeing all the
other platforms growing and selling, but no mere mention of the Atari
except the low figures appearing daily on the American Stock Exchange
(it was under a dollar a share again last week).
Given the same set of circumstances as when I bought my ST, I don't
think I'd make the same choice. For one, there are no longer any Atari
dealers within 2 hours driving (there used to be four). Also, several
software manufacturers have jumped ship and no longer support the ST or
any Atari line.
Of course, it's easy to talk about hypothetical situations, but the fact
remains that many of us still own and use the ST and TT. Now, with the
Falcon and Jaguar being dangled in front of us, we wonder what to do
next. Jump ship? Wonder if the captain is still at the helm or is he
already on the last lifeboat? The temptation is great to simply follow
the crowd and move to a Mac. For the moment, we'll just sit back and
watch what happens, but the time of critical mass is soon approaching
and any serious computer user will simply have to make that final
decision on an upgrade, and I, for one, don't want to be left in an
abandoned, non-upgradable, non-repairable and non-supported situation.

On the plus side, the Falcon computer from Atari is apparently being
shipped to some locations. One happy camper is Greg Kopchak, who writes:
I'm now sitting here typing on a "real" US version Atari Falcon.
The wait may be over. This is a real fun machine. The sound
capabilities are awesome and true-color is great. The higher res
graphics look best on a VGA or color monitor rather than a SC1224.
The machine will also have a super selection of startup software
on the hard drive. Enough to get you going and more. The SAM sound
program is great.
And some developers *are* releasing programs as well. Consider this

Well, no sooner have I gotten started on this column then I notice that
my space is just about up! It's feels great to be writing about the
Atari again, and maybe I'm just a simple-minded fool, but I *really*
hope Atari gets their act together this time and realize what they have
going for them. Those guys using the Macs aren't all that happy, but
it's "the cool" thing to do.
By comparison, the folks using the Atari (even the old clunky ST and 8
bits) are still having fun and getting the job done. Imagine how much
money you could make if you delivered a computer that was fast, fun,
affordable and popular. The only thing Atari has to do is make it
popular. There is no easy answer to that equation, but it would seem
that marketing (advertising) backed up by support might just do the
trick. But it must be attacked like the samurai attacks his opponent.

host the Fourth Annual Blue Ridge AtariFest in Asheville, North

created a few months back, in the next Z*Net? Everyone seemed to love

toothpaste" and "Hyundai" fame.)
On screen, a shot of Calamus, (or Pagestream, or whatever), a few
spreadsheets (Opus?), and some graphs and such.

business.... <pause> but it's not an IBM."
Scene switches to MTOS, a few open windows, a mouse pointer moving
around, a few icons, and some accessories. The voice continues:

LEXICOR SOFTWARE PRESENTS: The NOVA Graphics Card.
It's me again Yat Siu from Lexicor Software Europe. I have a happy
announcement to make!
Lexicor Software is glad to announce that they have acquired
distribution rights to the NOVA Card. The Nova Card comes in
essentially 5 different versions. Lexicor Software Products that run on
the NOVA Card are:
XENOMORPH-3D/PHOENIX (works 100%) all functions
Cyber Colour (works 100%) all functions
Prism Paint (works 100%) v.1.1, 1.5 and the soon to be released 2.0
CHRONOS-3D Newest Version (works 100%) You can even RENDER in any rez at
8bit
GENESIS (works 100%)
Render 24 (works 100%)
Utility Disk (?) I haven't checked all the utilities but nearly ALL
appear to work.
And since it has an own VDI Driver, most Atari Applications that are
written cleanly should work just fine. Now to the availability and the
prices, Lexicor users get a special price as I understand and for those
who buy our Software bundled, they too will get a special price. I have
listed them into Lexicor and Non Lexicor and listed the price

If you own an ST or a regular STE (eg.1040, 520) then with a special
adaptor you can connect the Mega BUS versions on your ST, STE. Price of
the adaptor however is to date not known.

The Max rez in 16,7 Million colors for the 16M VME is 640*480 and the
MegaBUS is 640*400.
The Max rez for BUS version is 1024*768 and for VME version is 1088*832
at 70 Hz.
The Max rez at 32k colors for BUS version is 768*512 and VME version is
800*600.
The SUPERNOVA is a dream Card for a dream Price!!!
Max Mhz is 135 MHZ with 16,7 Million colors at 800*600, 32k colors at
1024*768, Absolute Max at 256 Colors max is 1280 * 1024. Ram type is
VRAM unlike the NOVA standard DRAM and has 2 Megabytes of VRAM. It has
everything that regular NOVA's have AND has a hardware speedup, making
it even quicker!
Naturally, Virtual Resolutions possible!
This is a very, very fine card and is to my knowledge the cheapest
available Graphics Card for your Atari. The Crazy Dots which we so
promoted before is still a fine card, but proved to be less compatible
than the NOVA making for Lexicor Software the NOVA Card be the preferred
choice.
Please, as this is a service of Lexicor Europe which needs to import and
may run out of stock, consider a maximum delivery time of 6 weeks,
depending on your preferred choice of delivery (Ground, Air, UPS or
FEDEX?!).

In addition: as a special gift to all our Lexicor software customers
Lexicor will be offering a "NOVA-Chronos Private-Stock" bundle which
will include all updates for all Lexicor products which run on the NOVA.
With the NOVA you can do complete animations from start to finish. This
offer will extend to the Phoenix with a special NOVA Phoenix/.ANM update
when it is ready.
This offer means that for as little as $529 (plus shipping etc.) you can
upgrade your ST/TT system and begin creating full 24 bit animations. It
is a plug and play combination you can't beat at any price anywhere
else.
If you want to ensure full compatability of you exicting or new Phase-4
software be sure to check here before making a decision on purchasing a

FMAP05.ZIP - FLASH MEMORY CARD DRIVER UTILITY FILES
These are the boot block utility file and driver files to operate the
FMAP0.5 flash memory card in the Portfolio and in the PC Card Drive.
LOAN.COM - AMORT LOAN PMT PAYMENT
Simple loan calculator for the Portfolio
DIAGRA.ZIP - BUGLESS PRG. HOW SHOW DATES WEEK IN GRAFIK
The prg. shows you dates of the week in grafik. You can use it with
your diary app. It helps me to have a overlook (?) to my dates.
PRHOOK.ZIP - Portfolio hooks to embed printer codes
This archive contains editor hooks to insert printer codes into text.
There are three versions: one for Epson-compatible printers, one for HP
Laserjet 2 printers and one for HP Deskjet printers. The hooks enable
you to embed codes for underline, bold and italic as long as your
printer will support them.
CON2CO.EXE - UTIL PARALLEL ANSI SERIELL
Short Utility to send any Character to any Device/File Simply echos
everything you type in on the screen.
Usage: con2con>prn: Simple Typewriter Press /|\-Twice to exit
REPORT.ZIP - New Re:Port address and price list
This is the new information and price list file for Re:Port. Includes
new address!
PRTHOO.ZIP - Print Hooks to embed print codes
Three editor hooks written in PowerBasic to embed printer codes for
bold, underline and italics into text in the Portfolio editor.
Epson.hoo is for Epson printers and hplj.hoo is for HP Laserjet 2
printers. Hpdj.hoo, is a hook for the HP Deskjet. Please note, this
file DOES NOT include pbrun.com which MUST be loaded for the programs to
operate .
PAGE.COM - Page formatter
This is a page formatter which allows you to control margins, page
widths, add page numbers and headers. It works well on the Portfolio.
Just enter 'Page' for a brief help screen - you may need to set the
Port display to static to read it, but you'll soon get to know the
switches.
BLPM12.ZIP - BIG LITTLE FILE VIEWER WIDE SCREEN
The Big Little Print Machine: View text files on your Portfolio on an
(aprox) 75x10 character graphic screen with the smallest font. You can
toggle between three font sizes; tiny, near normal, and big. Files can
be larger then what will fit in memory. Special resume where you left
off feature.
OSZI.EXE - UTILITY
Demo version for the first Oszilloscope fot the Portfolio. The program
is self-extracting on the PC.
ADR2CD.CMD - MicroEmacs procedure file "adr2cd.cmd"
This is a commented procedure file for MicroEmacs implementations that
converts Atari Portfolio Address Book format files (.adr files) to a
comma delimited format suitable for import into database programs.
TIMB11.ZIP - ACCESS TRS TIME BILLING
Version 1.1 - Corrects null date & time problems, This is a MS Access
Database setup to accept imported data from the TRS system running on
the Portfolio. This parses the .tim file and creates entries in the
database and a time log report. Easy to modify and contains several
'hard' tricks in Access Basic
UNZIP.EXE - PORTFOLIO UTILITY UNZIP
This utility will unzip all versions of zip files (as far as I know) -
very useful now there are different versions of PKZip about. For
instructions on use just type unzip and press enter.
TODAY.COM - Diary Task Viewer 1.1
DIARY.DRY Task Viewer 1.1. Fixes minor bug of 'No appts' message
appearing when you have only 7 appts/tasks. Should replace TODAY.COM
1.0.
4CORN1.ZIP - Four Corners Card Game
Try your hand at this card game. The goal is to place the KINGS,
QUEENS, and JACKS only in their proper places on the game board. You
must develope a winning strategy. Requires PBASIC.
ADR2CD.ZIP - Convert ADR files to Comma-Delimited files
Convert an .ADR file to a comma-delimited file, for importing to
databases or other applications. Written by BJ Gleason.
SUPDIR.ARC - SuperDirectory: Sorted, Color-coded Dir Listings
SUPER-DIRECTORY: Program to display sorted, color-coded listings of
files in the current directory. Two versions included in archive, along
with documentation file: One version for desktop PC-compatibles, One
version for the Portfolio!
SEE.ZIP - Search non-text files for text
See is a small utility to search a non-text file for text. A program
written for a standard PC but works on the Portfolio.
PCOMM1.ZIP - COMMUNICATION UTILITY FOR PORTFOLIO
Communication and File-Transfer program for Atari Portfolio. Very handy
terminal program by Ender Koroglu.
FONIO.EXE - Portfolio Tone Dialer
Keyboard to tone dialer utility for the Portfolio. Enter any of
1234567890ABCD*# in a string followed by enter and it will be tone
dialed through the Port's speaker.
ATHLP.COM - AT Commands help in PRead format
This is the AT command help file recently uploaded by Wolf-Theo Holl
converted into PRead format for the Portfolio.
R86.EXE - A86-compatible reassembler for COM-files
R86 - reassembler. (Freeware) Creates A86-compatible ASM-files, program
is in English, documentation (R86DOC.ZIP) is written in German.
Compressed with DIET to make it handy fo the Portfolio.
CLOCK.EXE - Clock and stopwatch for the Portfolio
Just another clock for the port. Press <Return> to start a stopwatch.

BI2BYT.EXE - Bit-To-Byte conversion utility
Small Bit-To-Byte conversion tool. Program and text in German - but
very easy to handle ! (self-extracting archive)
UNARJ.EXE - Extract ARJ-files on your Portfolio
Extraction utility for ARJ-files. Set your screen to <tracked> and type
UNARJ for more information.
WLINK.ZIP - Link your port to a PC - as master or slave
Weaklink is a serial master / slave program.
