  30. Statement by the President
  31.  
  32.      I am extremely pleased and gratified by the Senate's action 
  33. today in confirming Dr. Joycelyn Elders as the nation's next 
  34. Surgeon General.    Dr. Elders has consistently demonstrated a 
  35. high level of intellect, courage and wisdom in dealing with the 
  36. wide range of health and social problems facing our country.  Her 
  37. dedication to improving the lives of all Americans, especially 
  38. the children of America, won her the strong backing of a 
  39. bipartisan majority of the Senate.  I look forward to working 
  40. with her in confronting the pressing issues facing the public 
  41. health of our nation.

  43.      I am especially grateful to Senator Kennedy for his steady 
  44. leadership during the Labor and Human Resources Committee's 
  45. consideration of Dr. Elders' nomination.  Senator Kennedy's 
  46. dedication to this nominee was extraordinary.
