  14.                STATEMENT OF VICE PRESIDENT AL GORE
  15.  
  16.      President Clinton has chosen an outstanding person in 
  17. nominating Martha Craig "Cissy" Daughtrey to the U.S. Court of 
  18. Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.  She is an excellent justice and a 
  19. good friend who I respect and admire professionally and 
  20. personally.
  21.  
  22.      Cissy and I are long-time friends from Tennessee.  She is  
  23. fair-minded, hard-working, and dedicated to the law and to the 
  24. integrity of the judicial system.  As a lawyer, judge, university 
  25. professor, and the first woman justice on the state's Supreme 
  26. Court, Cissy has served Tennessee with distinction and honor.  
  27. She also is a dedicated wife and mother.
  28.  
  29.      Cissy is a leader among her colleagues and in her community.  
  30. Throughout her career, she has made a determined effort to help 
  31. others, particularly through her work on court reform and to 
  32. promote women and minorities in the legal profession.  Her career 
  33. also has been marked by many firsts:  She was the first woman 
  34. prosecutor in Tennessee, the first woman tenure-track professor 
  35. at the Vanderbilt University Law School, and the first and only 
  36. woman to serve on the Tennessee Supreme Court.

  38.      To whatever she does, Cissy brings skill, intelligence, 
  39. determination, and compassion.  For all of these reasons and 
  40. more, I believe Cissy will do an outstanding job as a judge on 
  41. the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.  I am proud of 
  42. her accomplishments, and I strongly support her nomination.
