I've got to get some wood together, yes.....and I will be going
up the canyon to do so soon I hope. I need about a cord which gets me
through the colder part of the season, and then I start burning the
old coal stove. It's in its 83rd year of faithfull service. Now there's
an example of fine American craftsmanship, imagine 83 years of keeping
the Gottfredson's warm, and that old stove is as good as the day it was
first made.
That old stove, hm..... still I hear Dad getin up at
5:00am on the cold winter mornings. Awakened by the clanging and
banging of him shaking the ashes out of the grate. Then he would
quickly wad up newspaper and dry kindlin....I listened to it snap in
his strong hands. While I was in my upstairs bedroom awakened by this
morning ritual, the scent of the new fire rose up the stairwell, and I
would slip back into a slumber.
That old stove,..... Dad is no longer around to light the
morning fire, its up to me now to shake the grates, and wad the
papers, but the scent of a new fire on a cold winter morning is as
good as when Dad done it. Its a good place to sit in the morning, by
that old stove, sipping my mornin cup of brew. Dad has gone, but that old
stove still keeps us warm.
