  6.     NEW YORK - Oct. 19, 1993 - Microsoft Corporation today
  7. announced Word 6.0 for Windows*, a major upgrade to its best-selling
  8. word processing program for the Microsoft* Windows operating system.
  9. With millions of users worldwide using Microsoft Word on the Windows,
  10. Apple* Macintosh* and MS-DOS* platforms, Word has emerged as the
  11. new word processing leader.  Microsoft Word was first released in 1983
  12. and has since been at the forefront of providing innovative features to make
  13. everyday tasks easy.  The new Word 6.0 for Windows redefines ease of use
  14. in word processing by offering innovations and enhancements, via
  15. Microsoft IntelliSense* technology, that eliminate many steps of everyday
  16. word processing tasks by delegating work to the computer.

  18.     After doing extensive research on what users wanted and needed in
  19. a word processor, Microsoft set several major design goals for Word 6.0
  20. for Windows, including making everyday tasks easier and faster,
  21. simplifying complex tasks, increasing product consistency and integration
  22. with other Microsoft Office applications, and providing an even easier
  23. transition for users of WordPerfect* for the DOS operating system.

  26. redefine ease of use in Word 6.0 for Windows," said Pete Higgins, senior
  27. vice president of desktop applications at Microsoft.  "Studying usersÆ
  28. everyday word processing tasks and making them easier has been
  29. instrumental in making us the best-selling word processor in the world."

  31. Word Makes Everyday Tasks Easier and Faster

  34.     Word 6.0 for Windows offers innovations that go "beyond ease of
  35. use" to help users focus on their work, rather than their computers.  Built
  36. into Word 6.0 for Windows, and every Microsoft Office program, is
  37. IntelliSense technology.  IntelliSense technology senses what the user
  38. wants to do and intelligently produces the desired result, making routine
  39. tasks automatic and complex tasks easier.  Examples of IntelliSense in
  40. Word 6.0 for Windows include AutoCorrect, AutoFormat and AutoSelect.

  42. *    AutoCorrect.  The innovative AutoCorrect feature
  43.     automatically replaces errors in mistyped or misspelled words.
  44.     For instance, if the user accidentally types "teh," it is
  45.     automatically replaced with "the" as soon as the spacebar is
  46.     pressed.  AutoCorrect will also automatically capitalize the first
  47.     word of a sentence or the first letter of any day of the week.  It
  48.     also catches common typing mistakes such as typing two
  49.     capital letters in a row when starting a sentence.  Users can add
  50.     thousands of commonly mistyped or misspelled words to
  51.     AutoCorrect to suit their personal typing needs.
  52. *    AutoFormat.  With the revolutionary AutoFormat feature in
  53.     Word 6.0 for Windows, users can automatically format an
  54.     entire document with one click on the toolbar.  Undesirable
  55.     formatting such as hard carriage returns, asterisks for bullets
  56.     and improper trademark symbols are automatically cleaned up.
  57.     Users can choose from more than 20 predesigned styles that
  58.     are provided in the Style Gallery, or create their own styles.
  59.     This innovative new AutoFormat feature represents more than
  60.     two years of design and development work and the
  61.     implementation of 400 design rules.
  62. *    AutoSelect.  With AutoSelect, selecting a word or a group of
  63.     words is easy and fast because Word understands that a typical
  64.     user selects complete words rather than just letters in words.  If
  65.     the user starts selecting text in the middle of the word, Word
  66.     6.0 for Windows goes back and automatically selects the
  67.     beginning of the word.

  70. AutoFormat, was over two years in the making," said Chris Peters, general
  71. manager of the Word business unit at Microsoft.  "We are very excited to
  72. show everyone this breakthrough in word processing technology."

  77.     Word 6.0 for Windows also helps the user by simplifying complex
  78. tasks such as creating a newsletter or form.  Users no longer need to learn
  79. complex sequences of steps because Word will act as a guide, prompting
  80. users through the process.

  82. *    Wizards.  Wizards are intelligent guides that interactively
  83.     direct the user in creating newsletters, resumes, calendars,
  84.     memos and other documents.  Wizards ask design-related
  85.     questions and create a document design based on the userÆs
  86.     responses.  Wizards can also be easily customized to fit any
  87.     user-specific requirements.
  88. *    Forms.  One of the top requests from users was the ability to
  89.     create, modify and work with forms.  Microsoft collected
  90.     business forms from more than 100 companies around the
  91.     world to better understand user needs.  With Word 6.0 for
  92.     Windows, users can now easily create business forms, and
  93.     standard forms such as purchase orders and invoices are
  94.     already included in the program.

  105.     Word 6.0 for Windows now provides menus, toolbars and dialog
  106. boxes that are highly consistent with those in other Microsoft Office
  107. programs.  The product also goes "beyond cut and paste" with full support
  108. of Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) 2.0, which is a key element of
  109. OfficeLinks delivering unparalleled integration of applications within the
  110. Office family.  OfficeLinks makes it easy to create, edit and publish richer
  111. documents by providing such features as visual editing and cross-
  112. application drag and drop.

  114. *    Visual editing.  With visual editing it is easy to create
  115.     compound documents using multiple Microsoft applications.
  116.     Just one click on the toolbar enables a user to easily insert a
  117.     Microsoft Excel spreadsheet into a Word document and
  118.     manipulate it without ever leaving Word.
  119. *    Drag and drop across applications.  With OfficeLinks, users
  120.     of Word 6.0 for Windows can easily drag and drop information
  121.     from one Office application to another using a mouse.
  122. *    Support for OLE Automation.  Word 6.0 for Windows also
  123.     goes "beyond macros" with support for OLE Automation, via
  124.     WordBasic, which allows Word to be controlled by the
  125.     Microsoft Visual Basic* programming system, Applications

  131.     More than 1 million users of WordPerfect for DOS have already
  132. switched to Microsoft Word.  As users of word processors for MS-DOS
  133. continue to shift to the Windows platform, Microsoft has continued to
  134. enhance the transition tools for WordPerfect users.

  136. *    WordPerfect conversions.  Microsoft analyzed, tested and
  137.     converted thousands of WordPerfect documents to help ensure
  138.     unsurpassed conversions.  A team of Microsoft developers
  139.     were dedicated solely to making the move from WordPerfect
  140.     for DOS to Word 6.0 for Windows as easy as possible.
  141. *    Enhanced Help for former WordPerfect users.  Microsoft
  142.     sponsored an intensive research effort with more than 200
  143.     WordPerfect users to study every aspect of their word
  144.     processing usage.  This research helped Microsoft develop a

  165. *    Easily customizable toolbars and menus.  Users can
  166.     customize their toolbars and menus more easily now than ever.

  168.     just a few clicks of the mouse.  More than 20 table formatting

  170. *    Tip of the Day.  Users can get a Word 6.0 for Windows tip
  171.     every time they start the program.
  172. *    Shared code with upcoming versions for the Macintosh
  173.     and Windows NT.  Users can expect excellent consistency
  174.     between Word 6.0 for Windows and upcoming versions of
  175.     Word for the Macintosh, the most popular word processor for

  177.     system, because the programs will be 80-percent core code.

  181. Data, more people worldwide are acquiring Microsoft Word than any other
  182. word processor.

  186. focus on user needs and to deliver a product that meets these needs better

  197.     Word 6.0 for Windows is scheduled to be available in more than 25
  198. different languages within the next nine months, including French, German,
  199. Hebrew, Indonesian, Japanese, Spanish, Thai, Turkish and traditional
  200. Chinese.

  205.     The new Microsoft Support Network offers the most
  206. comprehensive technical support in the industry for word processing
  207. products.  Microsoft Word users have access to unlimited,
  208. no-charge telephone support (toll charges may apply).  Additionally, users
  209. can choose from a wide range of options, consistent across all products, to
  210. meet varying support needs.  Corporate help desk and PC professionals can
  211. select from Priority Support and Premier Support, with
  212. 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week service via an 800 line.

  214. Pricing and Availability

  217.     Microsoft Word version 6.0 for Windows is now available through
  218. resellers for a suggested retail price (SRP) of $495.  Microsoft Word users
  219. can upgrade to Word 6.0 for Windows for a promotional SRP of $99 until
  220. March 1, 1994.  After this date the price will be $129.  Users of any other
  221. major word processor can upgrade to Word 6.0 for Windows for an SRP
  222. of $129.

  224.     Microsoft Word is also available as part of Microsoft Office.  Users
  225. of Word can upgrade to Microsoft Office for an SRP of $259 until Feb. 1,
  226. 1994.  Users of any other major word processor can upgrade to Microsoft
  227. Office for an SRP of $299 until Feb. 1, 1994.

  232.     System requirements include a personal computer with 286 or
  233. higher microprocessor; 3.5-inch high-density disk drive (5.25-inch high-density or 3.5-inch low-density disks also available); 4MB of memory; 18MB of hard disk space for typical install (5MB is minimum, 25MB is full install); Microsoft Windows
  234. operating system version 3.1 or higher (or Microsoft Windows* for
  235. Workgroups version 3.1 or higher, or Microsoft Windows* for Pen
  236. computing); and EGA or higher-resolution monitor compatible with
  237. Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher.
