  143.      Welcome to the second edition of NewtonS' Lutions.  This issue is dedicated
  144.      to add-ons, accessories  and product  announcements.  Since  many of  these
  145.      items are still smoke and  mirrors (vapor ware), this listing should  serve
  146.      as a resource  for ideas as to what can be done with  Newt'.  As one of the
  147.      largest  Apple dealers in the country, we're very excited about this little
  148.      "figgey"  and  will do  everything  we  can to  stay  on  top of  available
  149.      products.

  152.      to keep  this catalog up  to date, which may  be impossible as  this market

  157.      information on the Newton, and the second is laid out as a catalog.

  209.      Coca-Cola, Monsanto,  American Express, ProMed and  others are implementing
  210.      plans  to incorporate  Newton technologies  into their  information systems
  211.      strategies.
  212.  
  213.      American  Express is developing applications for its customers who will use
  214.      Newton  devices.   "We are  very  excited about  mobile  computing and  its
  215.      potential   applications   for   our   customers--business   travelers   in
  216.      particular," said John I Williams Jr., senior vice president.
  217.  
  218.      The Department of  Defense is applying the Newton  MessagePad to its health
  219.      care  operations.  Final contract  negotiations are underway  for a project
  220.      called  ProMed,  a  joint effort  between  the  DOD, Apple,  and  KPMG Peat
  221.      Marwick.

  223.      Apple has signed a deal with BellSouth's Mobile Systems Group  for wireless
  224.      communications  products and  services.   MobileComm, the  company's paging
  225.      unit  has committed  to producing  links between  its local,  regional, and
  226.      national networks and the Newton.

  228.      The PIE division  of Apple has  signed contracts with  Sprint and BT  North
  229.      America,  owner of  Tymnet,  for packet  network  access to  future  online
  230.      services.   Sprint  will  be  primary  contractor,  BT  North  America  the
  231.      secondary.

  233.      Ex Machina has  announced the  PocketCall Terminal program  and Notify!,  a
  234.      Wireless Messaging system.

  236.      Random House,  GeoSystems, Pensee, Penmagic  Software, and Blank,  Berlyn &
  237.      Co. have corroborated  on the new Starcore titles.

  239.      The  following companies are  announcing products for  Newton: CE Software,
  240.      Claris Corp.,  Fingertip, Great Plains, Integrated  Systems, On Technology,
  241.      Pastel & Pastel, Slate, and  Strategic Mapping.  These products  range from
  242.      specialized realty systems to titles for sports enthusiasts.

  244.      Apple  believes that there are three primary markets for Newton Technology.
  245.      (1) The traditional  retail customers  who will benefit  from the  built-in
  246.      communication and organization  capabilities, add-on  software titles,  and
  247.      future product  designs. (2) corporate  customers who  will utilize  custom
  248.      developed  applications and  specialized  features created  by third  party
  249.      developers. (3)  Manufacturers who  have licenses  the technology and  will
  250.      develop other products built on the foundation.

  252.      The  Newton  Toolkit -  which  is  due for  fall  shipment  - will  provide
  253.      graphical  layout  capabilities, and  will  utilize  both the  NewtonScript
  254.      programming  language and  built-in  Newton components.    It will  support
  255.      content, applications development, and authoring tools.

  257.      Eastern  Digital  Resources announces  that  "The  Newton  Answer Book"  is

  343.      The Newton Messaging Card allows Newton to work like a pager.   It connects
  344.      to  existing wide-area paging system, allowing numeric and text messages to
  345.      be  received.  With the Messaging Card, Newton can receive information such
  346.      as meeting confirmations, news and other services.
  347.  
  348.      The Messaging Card is a PCMCIA type II card, like  the Newton's RAM storage
  349.      cards.
  350.  
  351.      The Messaging Card fits over the top of Newton, and slides into  the PCMCIA
  352.      slot.  It has 128 kb of static RAM storage space.
  353.  
  354.      The card is a single-frequency  receiver in the 929-932 MHZ frequency  band
  355.      and  features a  built-in  antenna.    It is  compatible  with  all  POCSAG
  356.      protocols including  both 7 bit  and 8  bit messaging formats  and will  be
  357.      available with 512, 1200, or 2400 baud code speeds.

  359.      The AAA battery will supply power for more than  21 days.  It protects data
  360.      when the main battery is low or being replaced.
  361.  
  362.      The card  has an  On/Off  switch, a  transducer,  and a  multicolor  status
  363.      indicator.  A flashing  green LED indicates unread messages, and a flashing
  364.      red LED  indicates a low battery.   An audible alert  indicates that radio-
  365.      frequency (RF)  information has been received.  It will also alert you when
  366.      you are out of paging range.

  368.      The card  can detect  as many as  four POCSAG addresses.   Each  address is
  369.      capable  of responding to four functions, and  each function has a total of
  370.      32 subaddresses.   There are  16 combinations of  addresses and  functions,
  371.      each  referred to as  a source.   The card will  respond to a  total of 512
  372.      individual subaddresses.

  374.      The  information supplied after the address can  be either tone-only, 4 bit
  375.      numeric,  or  7  bit or  8  bit  data.   The  card  will  also support  OTA
  376.      programming  so  the paging  service provider  can  enable and  disable the
  377.      card's functions.

  379.      You  can  program  different Messaging  Cards  with  the  same address  and
  380.      functions  and  thereby accomplish  group call  and  subgroup call  to send
  381.      identical messages to each Newton. (Way COOL!)

  384.      limit is defined by the available RAM.
