*** ShareWare SpotLight ***
This month we take a look at two products for Windows, WordFind and
Paint Shop Pro v2.0.
WordFind v1.0
for Windows
by Tony Curro
Go to any store that sells magazines, and you are bound to see
Find-A-Word and many others puzzle books with the same concept. You
have a grid of letters, and a list of words. Your object is to find
and circle the word, then cross it off the list.
WordFind v1.0 is an electronic Windows version of this game. The
shareware version available on the boards has five puzzles. It is a
trial version and the save and restore options are disabled.
Each puzzle has a specific theme: Christmas, Music, Space, etc.
Installation of the program is very simple. You just create a
directory, and uncompress the file into it. Then from Windows, you
can either add it to a group, or just double click on WF_TRIAL.EXE
to run the program.
Once started, you will see your list of words on the left, grid in
the center, and a button bar on top. There is also a timer in the
upper right corner. The button bar consists of your options: Save,
Restore, Colors, More Fun, etc. Colors allow you to change the color
of the line drawn around a word.
You will see something like below:
DSFTCLOCKEALQPO
The word CLOCK is present above, starting at the fifth letter. The
word LEAK is there starting at letter 12. To circle CLOCK, you would
place your mouse pointer on the first C and then drag it to the K.
Releasing it, and if IT is in the word list, the word will
automatically be circled. Likewise, starting with the L and going
backwards would be how you circle LEAK. Words also run diagonally.
Once you do get a word, the word is removed from the word list.
I really enjoy this game. There are several advantages to an
electronic one. First, it can be played over and over by many
people. Second, the computer will draw a perfect circle. Third, it's
just plain FUN!!
Those who register with at least $5.00 will receive the complete
version with save and restore enabled, and 10 new puzzles. If you
send $10.00 or more, you will receive an additional 20 puzzles for a
total of 30. If you are into word games, don't even bother looking
for this file on the boards. Just send in the money. You will not be
disappointed.
Look for filename WORDFIND.ZIP.

Paint Shop Pro v2.0
for Windows
by Tony Curro
Paint Shop Pro is a complete image utility program for Windows. It
is an Image File Viewer, Format Converter, Editor and Screen Capture
program It will support just about any graphic format. This new
version is much improved over the earlier version. It requires
Windows 3.1, 286 or higher system, 900K hard disk space, 256-color
video driver is optional, but highly recommended.
Highlights of Paint Shop Pro 2.0 include:
* Image conversion supporting all the major bitmap formats and batch
processing.
* Image-wide image enhancing.
* Screen capturing.
* Standard and user-defined filers.
* Scan directly into Paint Shop Pro with any TWAIN-compliant
scanner.
* OLE server support for OLE client documents.
* Supports up to 16 million colors.
Version 2.0 allows you to open several files at one time. It now has
a tools' icon box on screen. In this way you can select a tool, and
use it, without the need to drop down a menu. It allows you to zoom
in or out to levels of ten, and has full printer control that
includes the ability to determine size and position of the image on
the printed page.
You can capture a full screen, a user-defined area, a window or a
window's client area. If you wish to select a specific area on a
screen, select capture and PSP minimizes itself. After you are
finished, and release the mouse button, PSP returns with your image
in place. Now you can work with it in a variety of ways: resize,
resample, increase or decrease colors, crop, adjust brightness and
contrast, highlight and shadow, greyscale, and more. It will do many
things that costly high-end imaging programs will do. But, PSP does
it at a fraction of the cost.
Paint Shop Pro will open and save to many formats. Along with BMP,
PCX, TIF, MSP and others it has supported in the past, it now also
supports: .IFF, .RLE, .LBM, .CUT, .JIF/.JPG, .EPS, .CLP, .WMF and
also Kodak Photo CD (.PCD).
I have used it to scan directly from my color scanner, and the
process was a piece of cake.
Some people do not realize that there IS some quality shareware out
there that CAN compete with the high priced commercial ventures.
This is one such program. It was awarded the CTM Editor's Award of
Excellence last year, and it will again this year. It has improved
dramatically, while the price has not risen that much. Since I have
placed it on my system last year, with the first review I did, I
have not removed. I constantly find it useful.
Look for Paint Shop Pro 2.0 for Windows on your favorite BBS or on
CompuServe. Registered users can upgrade for $23. Call JASC for
further information.
