  11. This month's column is a follow up to my column of last month where I
  12. sought input regarding accessibility to the arts in the metro area.
  13. Oh, by the way, thanks to those of you who responded to my request for
  14. personal stories.
  15.  
  16. This summer Very Special Arts Minnesota (VSAMN) will be collecting and
  17. compiling information to be used in an arts guide for the 7 county
  18. metropolitan area.  The guide under the cover Art Town: An Arts Access
  19. Guide, will include accessibility information for Twin Cities'
  20. performing and exhibiting arts venues.  This guide will allow people
  21. with disabilities to know what to expect when they venture out to
  22. participate with the arts in the metropolitan area.
  23.  
  24. This information will be compiled through on-site surveys conducted by
  25. people interested in access and in the arts.  That is where you come
  26. in.  We need volunteers to visit the various venues, conduct the
  27. survey, and then, report that information back to our office.
  28. Depending on the total number of people that are involved as
  29. surveyors, each volunteer will probably be called on to conduct the
  30. survey in 2-3 sites.  Each survey will be done by a team of at least 2
  31. people and the surveys will be conducted during July and August.
  32.  
  33. Since this access guide will be used by people with disabilities, we
  34. are extremely interested in having people with disabilities serving as
  35. volunteers for this project.  Your insights and experiences with
  36. access issues will help to assure that the survey results are accurate
  37. and reliable.  In addition, since this survey will address more than
  38. just wheelchair access, we are looking for people from the various
  39. disability communities throughout the 7 county area.
  40.  
  41. To get this all rolling, a training seminar will be held at Hennepin
  42. Center for the Arts in downtown Minneapolis in late June.  The
  43. seminar, held in the evening and lasting approximately two hours, will
  44. be conducted by Sue Lasoff and Deborah Leuchovius and staff and
  45. volunteers of VSAMN.  All volunteers will be fully briefed about how
  46. to carry out the survey and how to set up the survey appointment.  All
  47. survey materials will be distributed at the meeting and questions will
  48. be answered concerning any matters about the project.
