┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Eeeek Night At The Palace! │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ Now that we have your attention regarding the party taking place on │
│ October 31, 1993 for the BBS world at the World Famous Hollywood Palace, │
│ we come to the time we tell you what motivated the entire event. │
│ │
│ On October 31, 1993 from Noon until 5 p.m. The Palace and Eeeeks will │
│ work together to provide a safe Halloween for the children of Hollywood. │
│ The Palace will be decorated in the motif of a haunted house, to provide │
│ an entertaining tour for the children. The children will be entertained │
│ by a magic act, given a bag of candy & sent on their way. │
│ │
│ There are 6,300 children in the Hollywood area that fall into this age │
│ bracket. We want to provide as many of them as we can with a safe place │
│ and entertainment. The days of trick or treating when we were kids, and │
│ probably when most of you were kids too, are long gone. Children simply │
│ aren't safe on the streets at night, not even early evening. This is what │
│ motivated the entire event of Eeeek Night At The Palace. Eeeek Night At │
│ The Palace is an event designed to attempt to defray the cost of the │
│ afternoon event. Any donations made to the afternoon event will be put │
│ to good use and if any money should be left over from these donations, it │
│ will be given to a charity which gives support to battered children. │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Eeeek Night At The Palace! │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ The evening event is designed to pay for the cost of opening the doors of │
│ the Palace, its employees, electricity, cleanup, etc. The evening event │
│ is not designed as non-profit. If costs are covered and a profit is made,│
│ it will be the profit of the Palace - Eeeeks WILL NOT make any monetary │
│ profit from this event. So when you purchase a ticket to join in on the │
│ evening event you are helping the children of Hollywood without even │
│ realizing it and getting something for your money besides. │
│ │
│ Eeeeks has managed to secure the well known JD Hall for your evening's │
│ music entertainment, as well as the famous comedian Roger Kabler. Thus │
│ far, these people are donating their time for this event. In addition, │
│ we have companies donating prizes to give to the best, worst, and most │
│ original costume, the winner of the Comedy Contest (a 14.4 modem for │
│ that lucky person) and door prizes. │
│ │
│ We want to generate a good feeling about the BBS world. The online │
│ community has taken some strong raps this & prior years. Many BBSes │
│ have faced closures and other problems as a result of these bad raps. │
│ The people calling BBSes have also taken these raps. But we know the │
│ online world is made up of normal, caring people. │

│*A misunderstood superstition is that of the black cat. Most believe seeing│
│or having a black cat cross one's path brings bad luck. But the truth is, │
│it depends on where you live. In the U.S. and some parts of Europe, a white│
│cat is lucky and the black cat unlucky. In Great Britain, the opposite is │
│believed. So here is the true belief of all countries: 1. To meet a black│
│cat is a good omen, especially if it crosses your path. 2. A black cat is │
│a bad omen if it crosses your path from left to right or turns back towards │
│you then runs away. │
│* To have a coffin, even a miniature one, in the house is considered an ill-│
│omen. They will, it is said, bring bad luck to all in the house. │
│* 13 - The number feared so much that there used to be no thirteenth floor │
│in many buildings. But the number is either lucky or unlucky, depending on │
│your personality. If it brings you good luck, mark every Friday the 13th │
│for any new undertakings. If it is unlucky, stay in bed, but don't dream, │
│especially if you happen to live on Elm Street, for you see, it is lucky for│
│Freddie. │
│* Meeting a hearse is an evil omen. The omen, it is believed by some, to be│
│even more evil if the hearse is empty. This applies only to a hearse coming│
│towards you but not to one passing you. │
│* Broom is bad luck, for it is said to sweep away one's luck! │

│ Jack The Ripper! │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ Every few years a group of individuals who restudy the evidence, come up │
│ with a new theory behind the identity of Jack The Ripper. Although there │
│ have been a large number of unsolved murder cases throughout history, the │
│ case of the Ripper is by far one of the most fascinating -- perhaps due to │
│ the time and place. │
│ │
│ Jack the Ripper killed prostitutes during the Victorian Era (a time when │
│ sex itself was all but denied as being real.), and the city of Whitechapel │
│ was a poverty stricken, lower grade area of London. Violent crime of this │
│ sort was extremely rare in Victorian London, and the fact that they never │
│ "caught" the Ripper makes the case even more intriguing. │
│ │
│ The Ripper's spree began on August 31st, 1888 with the brutal slating of │
│ Mary Ann Nichols, a 42 year old prostitute. Not only had the Ripper slit │
│ her throat, but her abdomen as well. On November 10th 1888, the body of │
│ Mary Kelly and her body was not found in the street but in her room in │
│ Miller's Court. Apparently the Ripper had several hours in which he/she │
│ totally butchered the body. │
│ │
│ Who was really Jack The Ripper? Was it the Lawyer that London Police said │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Jack The Ripper! ....continued.... │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ it was? Or was it the Russian immigrant, a qualified physician and raving │
│ lunatic. A very popular theory is that Jack The Ripper was a person of │
│ high rank, and the police covered up the scandal. The Duke of Clarence - │
│ a grandson of Queen Victoria was one such accused person. Another theory │
│ is that Jack The Ripper was a woman. According to the British writer John │
│ Godwin, this would explain how the Ripper was able to escape so easily.. │
│ he stated that a female even when stained with blood, wouldn't have rated │
│ a second glance during the East End panic. She could have walked anywhere │
│ at any time with the assurance that witnesses would be focusing their │
│ attention on MEN. The woman might have been a midwife, which would account│
│ for the knowledge of anatomy. She probably was able to be friendly with │
│ the girls on the street and could approach any one of them without putting │
│ them on their guard. When Queen Victoria died, her shameful secret │
│ was revealed. In the upstairs rooms of her house "Osborne House", rooms │
│ which she kept darkened and locked and allowed no one else into, her son │
│ Edward discovered hundreds and hundreds of photos - all with a strange │
│ similarity... they were all pictures of dead people - corpses photographed │
│ at their own funerals. The queen had a terrible dislike of sex (probably │
│ since Albert died...) & she had a fetish with the dead. If the Ripper was │
│ indeed a woman... our thoughts wander into the area of 1 particular woman. │

│Accustomed 2 Customs! The Custom of Halloween │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│On October 31st, throughout the United States, groups of small, bigger, and │
│even bigger children ban together to go from house to house demanding a │
│treat or the promise of the delivery of a trick. Well, at least they did │
│when I was a kid. We'd roam the neighborhood around our houses, without a │
│parent in tow to supervise us. When someone failed to provide the demanded │
│treat, you can be sure we had a trick or two up our sleeve for them. But │
│today children are walked or even driven around their neighborhoods by their│
│parents. Regardless of these facts, the custom itself began, it is believed,│
│among ancient Druids, who believed on that evening, Saman, Lord of the Dead,│
│called forth hosts of evil spirits. The Druids, apparently to ward off the │
│evil spirits, lit great fires on Halloween. │
│Among the Celts, Halloween was the last night of the year and was considered│
│a time of reflection as well as a time to look towards one's future. │
│When the Romans conquered Britain, the Roman Harvest Festival was added to │
│the Halloween festivities. The Roman Harvest Festival was to honor the │
│goddess Pomona, goddess of the fruits of trees. Out of this festival came │
│forth the custom of bobbing for apples. │
│When the custom aged, Scotland and Wales got into the action and set forth │
│the custom of witches and ghosts. Telling tales of both roaming the world │
│on Halloween night. │
└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│Accustomed 2 Customs! Halloween continued │
├────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│The craved pumpkins, though not a new concept (we'll tell you more about │
│that later), with the candle placed inside, took the place of the great │
│fires the Druids once built. The grotesque face on the pumpkin was develop-│
│ed to frighten off the evil spirits released by Saman. │
│In the medieval times, around the eighth century, Pope Gregory III,designat-│
│ed November 1 as the feast day of departed Christian saints. The is how, to│
│Christians, Halloween became known as All Saints Eve or Hallowmass. │
│The custom of wearing a costume came about in that same period of time as │
│Pope Gregory III. In the tradition of the Druids, the belief still contin- │
│ued that evil spirits were released on Halloween night. So the village │
│people would dress up in a costume, representing the dead spirits, or what │
│they believed the dead spirits would look like, and then parade on the out- │
│skirts of the village to frighten the evil spirits away. They also believed│
│the evil spirits took possession of houses, so the costumed villagers began │
│going from house to house to scare the spirits out the homes. The custom of│
│getting a treat came out of an old Irish tradition. The Irish always went │
│soliciting on All Saints' Eve in the name of Muck Olla, a shadowy figure │
│coming from the Druids folklore. They asked for a penny, but as time went │
│by, the penny was replaced by a piece of fruit or candy. The trick came │
│about if one failed to supply the requested treat to Muck Olla. The trick │

│was supposed to be something the goblins did in retaliation for not support-│
│their leader. │
│The pumpkin, as stated before, was a custom that came about from another │
│custom. Again, this is an Irish custom. The Irish had the custom of carv- │
│ing and creating lanterns from vegetables. In Ireland the traditional │
│Halloween lantern was a hollowed-out turnip or potato with a candle inside. │
│When the Irish came to America, the tradition was maintained but the turnip │
│or potato was replaced with the pumpkin. The Jack O'Lantern got its nick- │
│name from a tall tale about a man named Jack. Jack was notoriously a stingy│
│man who almost lost his soul to the devil on a Halloween night in a pub. As│
│Jack was about to expire, he struck a deal with the devil. One more drink │
│and he would then follow the devil to hell, happily, was what Jack told him.│
│But, he told the devil, he had no money to buy the last drink. So he asked │
│the devil to charge the drink so they could be on their way. The devil │
│obliged. As the devil was getting the drinks, Jack somehow managed to pop │
│him into a purse and refused to let him out unless the devil promised not │
│to take him for at least ten years. The devil agreed and was released. The │
│story does not end there however; for ten years later when the devil came │
│back after Jack, Jack once again managed to fulfill another double cross on │
│the devil. This time, before releasing him, Jack made him promise he would │

┌────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐
│Accustomed 2 Customs! Halloween continued │

│never ask for his soul again. The devil, though reluctant, finally agreed. │
│When Jack died, he went to the gates of heaven and because of his misdeeds │
│throughout his life, he was turned away. So Jack went to the door of hell. │
│He asked the devil to let him. The devil told him he could not let him into│
│hell because he had promised not to ask for his soul again. Jack asked the │
│devil if he could at least provide him with a light to guide his way. The │
│devil obliged by throwing Jack some coals from the never-ending fires of │
│hell. Jack, who had been munching on a turnip, caught the coals and placed │
│them inside the turnip. He walks the void between heaven and hell, lighting│
│his way with the coals of hell in his turnip. He is referred to as Jack │
│O'Lantern, as a result. │
│These are the multiple customs of what makes up our modern day Halloween. │
│Though trick or treating has been replaced, in many areas, with children's │
│activities in malls or a public park, the customs still thrive. And so │
│does, it seems anyway, the custom of goblins, ghosts, gremlins and witches │
│being released on the eve of All Saints' Day. If not, it would be safe for │
│the children to be out on the streets on their own, as I was and probably │
│most of you were. Have a safe and sane Halloween! Filled with care and │
│concern for the children out enjoying the scariest night of the year. Oh, │
│and one more thing.....BOO! │

│According to the book "The Unofficial U.S.Census" by Tom Heymann, there are │
│some interesting statistics regarding witches and warlocks and so-called │
│vampires. │
│ Heymann states that there are about 15,000 Americans who practice│
│witchcraft, and about 4500 of these are male witches also known as Warlocks.│
│ │
│Additionally he says that 12,000 are former Catholics and 750 former Jews. │
│ │
│Finally he reports that 1500 witches are gay or bisexual, and about the │
│same amount are under the age of 13. │
│ │
│Heymann also brings it to our attention that there are an estimated 500 │
│Vampires roaming our streets. │
│ │
│It seems that the majority of our pointy-toothed friends (425 out of 500) │
│prefer to use the method of biting to get their dosage of hemoglobic junk. │
│ │
│Seems the other 75 Vampires prefer to use syringes and other cutting type │
│instruments to gather their liquid. │
│We aren't really sure where Heymann gets these stats, but they're unique...!│

│ John stood in the bedroom, waiting once more for the horrible sound of a │
│ young woman's scream. He had heard it several times since he moved into │
│ the house. It always happened at the same time every night. After the │
│ scream, he would hear the sounds of someone being dragged across the floor │
│ and down the stairs. The thump, thump, thump, of the body being dragged │
│ down an uncarpeted stairway. Even though, the stairs were fully carpeted │
│ The first time this happened John hurried about the house looking for the │
│ owner of the screams. He found nothing. Even the second time it occurred │
│ John again sought to find the woman who was screaming. He checked every │
│ room in the house, including the attic and still he found nothing. │
│ Finally the scream came. A blood curdling scream vibrated throughout the │
│ house. John made no attempt to search it out this time. He knew he would │
│ find nothing. Then the familiar sound of thump, thump, thump, went down │
│ the stairs. │
│ John had bought the house about a month before. He had no feelings of any-│

│ until his first night in the home. It is an old Victorian style home. │

│ by the scene unfolding before him. A shadowy figure walked across the room│
│ from the closet area, dragging one leg across the floor. He was not limp- │
│ ing, but clearly he dragged his leg as though he had no control over it │

│ might sit if the room were used as a bedroom. "Well woman," the man said, │
│ as he positioned himself at the end of the bed. "Where did you put my │
│ gold?" The woman, John now could see clearly, lay on the bed in a heap. │
│ "I don't have your gold," she sobbed. The man moved towards her and be- │
│ fore John realized what was happening, the man hit the woman then placed │
│ his hands tightly around her neck. The woman let out a loud scream, then │
│ fell limp in the man's hands. The man then pulled his hands away quickly. │
│ He stepped back slightly and looked at the woman on the bed. He reached │
│ down and lightly slapped at her face, no response. The man then grabbed │
│ both hands of the woman and began dragging her to the door. John moved to │
│ the side. The man then dragged the woman out the doorway, down the hall │
│ to the stairs and then slowly down the stairs. John followed and watched │
│ as the entire story unfolded before him. He followed in silence as the │
│ man dragged the woman out the front door and into the yard. The man lay │
│ her on the ground and disappeared around the corner of the house. When he │
│ returned, he carried with him a shovel and he began digging. John watched │
│ all of it. When the deed was done, the man disappeared into thin air. │
│ The history of this house is simple. It does not have one! It is some- │
│ thing merely to entertain all you ghosts and goblins on this week of │
│ Halloween. Have a happy one and be safe! Ghosts do roam you know! │
