- Lesson 4
-
- MOVING & COPYING TEXT
-
- In Lesson 3, we learned that Perfect Writer temporarily
- saves all text larger than a single character in a special
- storage space called the "Save Area." In case you make a mistake
- or change your mind, the cut material can be pasted back in its
- original location by selecting PASTE from the Top menu.
-
- In this lesson, we will learn how Perfect Writer uses this
- simple procedure of cutting and pasting material to copy or move
- material from one location to another.
-
- Our first step will be to split the screen into two windows,
- afterwards displaying the short letter created in Lesson 1 called
- "myletter" in the top window.
-
- Scroll down by selecting:
-
- Escape...Forward...This window
-
-
- Create two windows:
-
- Escape...Operation...Windows...2 windows
-
- From this point on, follow the instructions in the bottom
- window by selecting:
-
- Escape...Forward...Other window
-
- Next, retrieve your practice letter and display it in the
- top window by selecting:
-
- Escape...Documents...Read
-
- When Perfect Writer responds "Document to read," type:
-
- "myletter" (followed by the Return key).
-
-
-
- MOVING TEXT
-
- The procedure for moving any text, whether word, line,
- sentence, paragraph, or marked area, is the same:
-
-
- 1) Cut the material (Perfect Writer will store it
- in the Save Area).
- 2) Move the cursor to the new location.
- 3) Restore the material using the Paste option.
-
- To see how this works, let's move the last sentence "I think
- Perfect Writer is going to be fun" to the very end of the letter.
-
- Position the cursor on the first word of the sentence to be
- moved: "I think..." and select:
-
- Escape...Text marking
-
- Move the cursor to the end of the sentence and select:
-
- Escape...Cut...Marked area
-
- Without making any further cuts, move the cursor to the end
- of the letter by selecting:
-
- Escape...Forward...End
-
- Press the Return key twice more to move the cursor to a new
- line.
-
- Type "P.S." and restore the sentence from the Save Area by
- selecting:
- Escape...Paste
-
- Perfect Writer restores the cut sentence, leaving the cursor
- at the end. Does it need adjusting? If so, move the cursor
- inside the sentence and select:
-
- Escape...Appearance...Paragraph...Fill
-
- In this way you can move almost any amount of text from one
- location to another, inserting it at precisely the point you
- wish.
-
- Perfect Writer allows you to move text not only within a
- document, but BETWEEN documents, too. The procedure is basically
- the same: Cut the passage to be moved from one document, switch
- the cursor to the other document, and recall the material at the
- new location by selecting Paste.
-
-
- Such moves are most easily accomplished using two windows
- (as now), in which the two documents are being displayed
- simultaneously. As an example, let us move a short paragraph
- from this lesson in the bottom window to your exercise letter in
- the top window.
-
- Switch the cursor to the bottom window by selecting:
-
- Escape...Operation...Windows...Switch
-
- (Scroll this window using: Escape...Forward...This window.)
-
- Next, move the cursor to the BEGINNING of the following
- paragraph and select:
-
- Escape...Cut...Paragraph
-
- "You'll have to come for a visit and practice using Perfect
- Writer yourself. I'll let you work through these lessons, and
- when you're finished I'll bet you will want to get Perfect
- Writer, too! Well, goodbye!"
-
- As soon as the paragraph is cut, Perfect Writer closes up
- the text. The cut material is now in the Save Area and you are
- free to move around and do other things. Switch the cursor to the
- top window:
-
- Escape...Operation...Windows...Switch
-
- (Resume using "Escape...Forward...Other window" to scroll
- these instructions.)
-
- In the top window, position the cursor where the cut
- paragraph will go: two blank lines below the first paragraph and
- indented with a single tab. (You will have to place the cursor
- at the end of the first paragraph and press the Return key twice
- to make room for the new paragraph.)
-
-
- Paste the cut paragraph, by selecting:
-
-
- Escape...Paste
-
-
-
- COPYING
-
- Copying differs from moving in that when the operation is
- complete, the text is present at both the old and new locations.
- Copying is performed by marking the text using Text marking and
- then selecting "Escape...Cut...Copy area" on the Cut menu. This
- action copies the marked text into the Save area (without
- deleting it from its original location). From the Save area, it
- can be restored to any number of locations in your document.
-
-
-
- SUMMARY
-
-
- In this lesson, you have learned how to quickly and easily
- transfer material from one location to another, either within
- a document or between documents.
-
- Simply:
-
- 1) Cut the material to be moved or copied into the
- Save Area.
-
- 2) Without making any further cuts, which would
- cause the first deletion to be discarded from the
- Save Area, move the cursor to the new location.
-
- 3) Insert the material at the new location by selecting
- Paste, which recalls the material from the Save Area.
-
- If you wish to proceed to Lesson 5 at this time, select
- "Exit PW" from the Top menu.
-
- (Note: Perfect Writer will respond with the message
- "Document(s) not saved! Do you still wish to exit?" Answer `y'
- for Yes.)
-
- Perfect Writer will present the PSI Menu. Select "Write or
- revise a document" specifying "lesson5," followed by Return key.
