- Features
-
- The Aprospand-64 is an expansion module advertised in many Commodore magazines
- and features the following claims:
-
- A. Four switchable (singly or in combination) expansion connectors.
- B. Reset button
- C. Fuse protection
-
- Let me begin by saying that I purchased my slot expander from the Computer
- Room. Anxiously I went home, unwrapped the package with great expectations,
- followed the "instructions", and powered up with three of my favorite
- cartridges installed. I had "Heswr iter 64", "Mach 5" by Access, and "The
- Final Cartridge" by H&P Company, of Holland...--- I'm waiting, why is the
- screen blank? Maybe I misread the instructions? No, everything is according to
- the printed instructions.
-
- I know, let's check the connections, clean the terminals with alcohol and
- reattach. Good, now let's power up once more (should have cleaned those
- terminals before I started). - - - Hmmm, maybe my 64 is kaput! I'll take out
- the expander and and double chec k. Remove expander and power up with no
- difficulty. OK, no expander is going to get the best of me! I'll remove all
- but the Mach 5 cartridge. Let's see all switches are off except the Mach 5.
- Contact, everything works perfectly. So, power off and add the Heswriter 64
- cartridge. Contact - all systems go, and I am able to switch between either of
- the cartridges without difficulty. (Probably didn't make good contact with the
- cartridge slots. Yeah, that's it!) Add The Final Cartridge - - - screen blank.
- Stran ge, but in any combination, with any cartridge, in any slot
- configuration, when I add The Final Cartridge nothing works... A little more
- trouble shooting and I find very few cartridge combinations that will allow
- power up with all four slots filled, even when they are "shut off"!!! Time to
- call the Computer Room, maybe I've got a defective product.
-
- After about half an hour at the Computer Room, we come to the same conclusion,
- - that with the combined resistance of the cartridges is added to the slot
- expander, the computer will not power up. But I do so much cartridge swapping
- I'm going to keep my in vestment any how. Suggested retail for the Aprospand
- is $29.95 (Marvin, at The Computer Room, might do you better if he sees you
- coming).
-
- To summarize, some cartridges simply will not work in combination with others.
- I find I use my word processor, Mach 5, and Explode V3.0 most often, and have
- had no problems. I do recommend the product, only if you are wearing out your
- slot through constan t changes. PS - it is nice to be able to insert
- cartridges without standing on my head to engage the cartridge port. All
- cartridges stand line up vertically, but for identification (they are so close
- together) you need to label the top of each cartridge! The manual states that
- the cartridges may be switched into use in combination (if the cartridges
- allow it) - - - sounds foolhardy to me! I'm afraid to try it They won't stand
- behind repair costs. Well that's about all I have to say, - now I switch in
- Expl ode to Hyper Load the next *@#&<.

- EDITOR'S NOTES:
-
- After reading the above I placed a call to Aprotek Customer Service. I spoke
- with Ben Holmes, the Customer Service Technician. He explained to me that the
- Aprospand may not be compatible with all versions of Commodore ROMS. His
- company has a two week sati sfaction or your money back on ALL their products
- (except ribbon extenders for the cartridge port). If you purchase this product
- and it does not work for you return it for a 100% refund.
-
- Another factor in the use of this device is the timing of the input/output
- lines. Some cartridges will only work when they are in the slots closer to the
- computer because of this. When you are dealing with the speed of electrons
- very short distances CAN m ake a difference.
-
- Mr. Holmes also stated that if the computer would not power up with the
- expander in place and all switches off that the unit should be returned for
- repair, if this occurs without cartridges in place. If it does not power up
- with cartridges in place then t hat particular combination is simply not
- usable. Even though the Aprospand will allow more than one cartridge to be on
- at once Mr, Holmes stated he was not aware of any two cartridges that would
- work together. This product is also compatible with the C=128. There are some
- C=128 owners using this or a similar product to allow for the use of both a
- RAM Expander and various cartridges. The RAM Expander is particularly
- sensitive to Input/Output timing. If you use a n extender with the REU keep
- the REU as close to your computer as possible.
-
- I would like to thank Mr Holmes of Aprotek for his time answering my quetions.
