- 2. Introduction to Gradebook Manager
-
- Welcome to Gradebook Manager!
-
- Gradebook Manager is a computerized gradebook program. You enter scores
- for your students on each assignment. Gradebook Manager does the rest,
- computing grades according to your requirements. You can compute grades
- based on total points earned, or based on a weighted average of the
- percent correct in each of four categories. You can drop low scores in
- each category, or excuse missing assignments.
-
- Gradebook Manager also prints reports summarizing student grades for
- the current term, for the entire school year, and for each assignment.
- You can also print a list of students missing assignments.
-
- Gradebook Manager is easy to use. The entire program is menu-driven and
- supports the use of a mouse. Context sensitive hints and help screens
- are always available.
-
- This program is distributed as shareware. You may try it without any
- obligation. If you like it and decide to use it, you should register
- with the author by sending $35 to:
-
- Daniel Ethier
- P.O. Box 600322
- St. Paul MN 55106
- (612) 774-5840
-
- When you register, you will receive: the latest version of this program
- (with your name, department, and school replacing the reminder about
- author registration), future versions of this program at a reduced price,
- and free user support for one year. Please use the form below when you
- register. Remember to specify which disk format you use!

- 3. A guided tour of Gradebook Manager
-
- The easiest way to start using Gradebook Manager is to put the disk
- into drive A of your computer, type A:, and type GRBOOK. If you want
- to install Gradebook Manager on your hard drive, or make backup copies,
- there are specific directions later in this manual.
-
- If you use a laptop computer with an LCD screen, you may have trouble
- telling which menus and menu commands are selected. You should either
- type GRBOOK BW to use the black and white palette, or GRBOOK MONO to
- use the monochrome palette.
-
- When the program starts up, you will see some information about author
- registration. Press ESC to close this dialog box and continue.
-
- Along the top of your screen is the menu bar. It lists the various
- menus you have access to. You may pull down a menu by pressing ALT and
- the first letter in the menu name. Each menu lists commands which are
- available to you.
-
- Along the bottom of your screen is the status line. It lists several
- important commands. You can get context-sensitive help by pressing F1.
- You can quit this program by pressing the ALT key and the X key at the
- same time.
-
- The right half of the status line provides various hints that you
- may find helpful as you use the program. If the hints are not enough,
- remember, you can always get more detailed help by pressing F1.
-
- Press ALT-C to pull down the classes menu, and then press M to make
- a new class. You will see a new dialog box, which allows you to enter
- a name for this class and the number of terms in your school year:

-
- Use your cursor keys to choose to compute grades using category
- weights, then press ENTER (we'll skip the other options). This will
- guarantee that tests are 50% of the final grade, that homework is 30%
- the final grade, and that projects are 20% of the final grade.
-
-
- Had you chosen to compute grades using total points, category weights
- would be ignored. Total points earned would be divided by the total
- points possible. This would be converted to a percent, which would
- determine the letter grade.
-
- You also have the option of excusing missing assignments, and dropping
- the lowest score from each category (the lowest score being the one which
- hurts that student's grade the most).
-
- When you are done entering your categories, press ENTER. Another
- dialog box will appear, asking you to enter the name of your first

- This report shows you every student's grade on every assignment, as
- well as their grade in each category. For real classes, with over 20
- students and assignments, it can be quite long!
-
- You can also generate a full school year summary, listing all the
- students in the class and their letter grades for each term of the
- school year, along with their final grades. And you can generate a
- report listing every student who is missing at least one assignment.
-
- There's one important task we have yet to do. Having entered all this
- valuable information, you still need to save it to disk. If you don't,
- it will all vanish when you turn off your computer! You will be warned
- if you try to quit the program, make a new class, or open a class
- without saving the class you are working on first.
-
-
- To save your class, press ALT-C to pull down the classes menu. Then
- press S to save this class. Since this is the first time you've saved
- it, a dialog box will appear, asking you to enter an MS/DOS filename:

- Allison will not be a happy camper!
-
- Again, before we quit, we should save our changes. Press ALT-C to pull
- down the classes menu. Now press S to save your changes. Now you can
- press ALT-X to quit the program.
-
- Saving your changes to disk really isn't enough, however. You should
- always keep your grades in a regular gradebook, and you should always
- make a back-up copy of your class files.
-
- When the end of the quarter arrives, use the next term command in the
- classes menu to move into the 2nd quarter. Everything else works exactly
- the same way. If you need to change a grade from 1st quarter, just use
- the previous term command, make your changes, and return to the 2nd
- quarter.
-
- You should also try the year summary report. This report prints a
- summary of student grades for each term of the school year. If you
- are using quarters, semester grades will also be reported.
-
- This concludes our guided tour. I hope you have enough information
- to begin using Gradebook Manager to record and compute your grades.
- Remember to press F1 for context sensitive help at any time!
-
-
-
- 4. Grade computation
-
- To better understand how Gradebook Manager computes overall grades,
- let's look at an example. We'll use three categories, with these weights:
-
- Tests 50
- Homework 30
- Projects 20
-
- These weights represent the contribution of each category to the
- overall grade. They do not have to be percents, but it is often
- convenient to think of them in that way.
-
- We'll put some assignments in each category for a student:
-
- Tests: Chapter 1 Test 20/25
- Chapter 2 Test 24/25
- Chapter 3 Test 21/25
- ----------------------
- Totals 65/75 87%
-
- Homework: Chapter 1 HW 9/10
- Chapter 2 HW 8/10
- Chapter 3 HW 10/10
- ----------------------
- Totals 27/30 90%
-
- Projects: Perspective 8/10
- Blueprint 9/10
- ----------------------
- Totals 17/20 85%
-
- The overall grade is computed by multiplying each category percent
- by its weight, adding the results, and dividing by the total of the
- weights:
-
- Tests 87 * 50 = 4350
- Homework 90 * 30 = 2700
- Projects 85 * 20 = 1700
- -------------------------
- Totals 8750 / 100 = 88%
-
- Letter grades are assignment according to the letter grade cutoffs
- in use at the time. Gradebook Manager initializes these as follows:
-
- A+ = 97% B+ = 87% C+ = 77% D+ = 67%
- A = 93% B = 83% C = 73% D = 63%
- A- = 90% B- = 80% C- = 70% D- = 60%
-
- You can change these cutoffs to whatever best meets your requirements,
- using the edit letter grades option in the classes menu. For example,
- if you do not give out A+ grades, leave that percent blank. Then, no
- student will ever receive an A+.
-
- If you prefer to grade based on total points only, without weighting
- tests or homework, then choose total points grade computation in the
- edit class dialog (use the edit grading options command in the classes
- menu).
-
-
-
- 5. Details: installation, backups, etc.
